Critics Warn State Bill Would Establish Permanent Muslim Privilege

A proposed Massachusetts bill is sparking controversy because it would create a permanent, taxpayer-funded commission to solely promote and support Muslims. 

The controversial Massachusetts measure, Senate Bill S.2134 and House Bill H.3351, is entitled, "An Act promoting the civil rights and inclusion of American Muslims in the commonwealth."

The proposed legislation aims to establish a state-funded commission focused on Muslim Americans. Its goals include promoting Muslim participation in public life "to combat Islamophobia." 

The Boston Herald reports the bill would even form a commission "prioritizing qualified American Muslims in Massachusetts for jobs in state government over other residents of different religious backgrounds."

CBN News spoke with Dexter Van Zile, managing editor of Focus on Western Islamism, regarding the bill. He argues the bill violates the U.S. Constitution and Article III of the Massachusetts Constitution, as well. 

"As soon as I saw this legislation, and as soon as a whole bunch of other commentators saw this legislation, we knew immediately that this was essentially a violation of the Establishment Clause," Van Zile said.

He contends that the government should not grant special status to one specific religious community. 

Van Zile also criticizes the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) for their involvement in supporting the bill, accusing the organization of supporting Hamas after the terrorist group murdered Israeli Jews. "They lauded the October 7th massacre," he argued.

He warns about the rise of "Islamist" movements in the West, describing the ideology as one that seeks to impose Islamic law and change discourse in secular democracies. "I describe Islamism as an ideology of Muslim male supremacism," he said. 

Van Zile contends that Western leaders sometimes fail to confront Islamist movements due to a misplaced desire to be compassionate or avoid accusations of racism. But he concludes that while the situation in the United States is less severe than in Europe, it is crucial for society to maintain the courage to openly address concerns about rising Islamist challenges.
