An Arkansas lawmaker wants to allow the celebration of Christmas in his state's public schools.

Rep. Justin Harris, R-West Fork, has filed a bill that would permit Christmas trees, menorahs, and other religious holiday displays.

School districts could create religious holiday displays as long as they also include a secular symbol, or an image from another religion.

Students and teachers would also be free to say, "Merry Christmas," ''Happy Hanukkah" and "Happy Holidays."

Harris explained that the goal of the bill was to protect those who are concerned about being politically correct or offensive.

The measure will now be presented before the state House Committee on State Agencies and Governmental Affairs.
