Germany Nabs 3 Syrians Suspected in ISIS-Inspired Plot
German authorities arrested three Syrian men Thursday suspected of plotting a terror attack.
An investigation revealed that the men had ties to the Islamic State in Syria, and were instructed to carry out a terror plot on German soil. Prosecutors say the men were planning two ISIS-approved suicide bombings and a mass shooting in Dusseldorf.
Two of the men had joined the Islamic State in 2014 and traveled to Germany via Greece. The pair then recruited the third man to join them in the terror attack.
There was a fourth man involved in the plot, but he turned himself in to authorities before the plan could go forward.
This incident is one in a host of mass-casualty attacks German officials have thwarted. This incident is also an example of a new phase of Islamic State terror.
The United Nations Security Council issued a report Thursday that ISIS has increasingly focused on international civilian attacks in the last six months.
The report indicates that although the Islamic State's territory is shrinking, it still maintains the ability to diversify and stand as a global threat. The report cites terror attacks in 11 countries, including Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Libya.
