FOX News’ Shannon Bream Shares Why Faith Makes the Impossible Possible, according to the Bible

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE

With her fourth title in a series of Bible-based books, Shannon Bream seeks to make Scripture accessible and deeply personal for modern readers. In Nothing is Impossible with God: Eleven Heroes. One God. Endless Lessons in Overcoming, she delves deeply into the trials of eleven unlikely heroes of the Bible, including Moses, David, Joseph, and ending with Jesus Himself, and draws parallels to the spiritual and personal challenges people encounter today. “My hope is that this book represents an encouraging reminder of how the Lord is willing and able to bless us more than we can imagine. Each story will help readers find comfort and inspiration, and equip them for the challenges they may face by showing that nothing is impossible with God by your side,” Shannon says. The book examines themes like doubt, loneliness, and perseverance, revealing how each man endured immense trials before finding peace through God. Nothing is Impossible with God underscores the timeless truth that while God never promised a life void of hardship, He promises to walk with us through it.

LESSONS IN OVERCOMING

“It’s easy to feel like God is all-powerful in moments of spiritual ecstasy, but do we really think God is at work when we’re out in the real world of traffic jams and bus stops and shabby funeral homes?” Shannon asks. She tells the story of Moses, for example, and how he draws a parallel to everyone who’s ever struggled with self-confidence.  “I don’t know any adult who hasn’t struggled with self-doubt at some point,” she says. “The question is how we deal with it in light of a call from our heavenly Father.” In Moses’ case, he came to learn that in his weakness was God’s strength (2 Corinthians 12:10), and that what God promised He always did.  Like him, Shannon says we can learn not to be afraid and to stand firm (Exodus 14:13-14).

Shannon also expounds upon the story of Joseph. In the latter chapters of Genesis, Joseph sees more than his share of family trauma. “The truly miraculous part of Joseph’s story is not that he survived betrayal and suffering but that he didn’t let it poison his faith in God and honorable view of authority. Instead of becoming bitter, Joseph trusted God and overcame the unfaithfulness of others—modeling what true fatherhood, brotherhood, and leadership look like,” Shannon points out. “What a life of honor Joseph led.  Despite losing his freedom, a false attack on his character, and being tossed aside by someone with the power to advocate for his release, he continued to exalt and trust his heavenly Father. He also broke the cycle of betrayal in his family. Every time an authority failed him, Joseph continued to trust that the ultimate Authority would not. Every time his integrity was repaid with cruelty, he continued to serve others, drawing from what God had given him. Even in the final test of Joseph’s trust, he unconditionally forgave the ones who had betrayed him, and in the process, became the faithful, loving brother that he’d never experienced.  Joseph’s story is a powerful picture of Jesus, the ultimate Savior to come.”

OBSTACLES OF HER OWN

Just before Shannon married Sheldon Bream in 1995, he was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor the size of a golf ball.  Surgery to remove it was successful, but left some minor facial nerve damage and consequent paralysis.  In addition, Sheldon’s father died earlier that year. The two events threw their world into a tailspin, and Sheldon into depression for a time. In time, they overcame their grief and stress through their faith in God and the support and prayers of many family members and friends.

Shannon was faced with her own health challenge a number of years ago.  “I suffered with a chronic illness that left me in enormous pain,” she explains.  “I’ve shared publicly how I spent months (that bled into years) trying to find a doctor and a diagnosis, desperately searching for an end to the torment that had taken over my life. What I didn’t know for the longest time was that I was suffering from a genetic condition known as map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy. Because of the disorder, the cells of my corneas don’t properly attach to the underlying membrane. For years, I was tearing the surface of my corneas over and over again. Each tear was a 10 out of 10 on the pain scale, leaving me despondent and hopeless as my life turned into a blur of unending pain and depression.  I had nearly lost the will to go on when I finally found the doctor who was literally an answer to my prayers.  By the time I found Dr. Thomas Clinch, I was at the end of my rope. That very first visit to his office, he told me he knew what was going on and how to help me. It was as if I’d won the Powerball and MegaMillions all at the same time. I’d forgotten what it felt like to have the tiniest glimmer of hope after such a long season of suffering.”

THE ULTIMATE OVERCOMER

Of course, Jesus is the ultimate example of overcoming, Shannon says, by having endured the greatest physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual suffering any human has ever known, and through it conquering death itself. As she shares the story of His crucifixion, she also clearly shares the gospel. “Before we come to Christ, we are spiritually dead in our trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1, 5),” she explains. “Through Jesus’s sacrifice, the greatest threats we could ever face have been vanquished. Sin can no longer enslave and defeat us. Death can no longer destroy our souls or result in eternal separation from our heavenly Father. For believers in Jesus Christ, there is nothing that can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38–39).  When God says, “I am with you,” He really can be, because He satisfied the debt that separated us with His own blood. This doesn’t mean we’ll always be happy, or never face difficulty—Jesus was always in close communion with the Father but still felt sorrow and still suffered. But it does mean that we will never, ever be alone. Jesus is the presence of God. Immanuel. God with us, through His Spirit.”  And knowing that, she says, we can overcome anything.
