What Does It Take to Become a Rockstar? It Wasn't What He Expected.

“To counterbalance the hangovers that I had almost every day, I would, abuse Adderall to get me to a place where I could function,” David Moore said. “I was a functioning addict.”

David Moore was a long way from where he started. He grew up immersed in the church with parents involved in the ministry, yet something was missing from his faith.

“I didn't really, at the end of the day, have a very alive personal relationship with Jesus,” David recalls. “I knew about God, but I never really got to the point in those days where I really knew the Lord for myself.”

He joined the worship team and developed a love of performing. The attention warped his character and pride filled his heart. “In those days leading worship. I allowed the ego to emerge in a place where I started to look for significance in that,” David said.  “And then, as I got into my 20’s, I got tempted with the party scene, and I started a band, and I left church. I quit serving there, and I started to follow after the Praise of Man. Playing to packed bars, where people are just throwing beer everywhere. In the moment, it seemed like I was doing something that was, significant. Slowly, I became more cold to the lord”

He started drinking socially and soon he was addicted to the buzz. “The temptation of the party quickly felt like I was in prison, internally. As it progressed, years later, it turned into just drinking alone,” David said. “There were days that I would just be so drunk, I'd be crawling around in my house weeping. Really? Actually, thinking I don't want to be doing this. I would get high, I would get paranoid, I would, I would be in my bed, gripped with fear and anxiety about my future or, you know, what was going to happen with me? Am I going to live like this my whole life?”

Searching for hope David would visit his parents’ church.  “Sometimes I was drunk going to church. Usually I was hung over, you know, on a Sunday morning I would go to the late service,” He said. “I would miss the worship. You know, worship requires some humility, some openness and vulnerability. I wasn't there yet, but I always wanted to hear the message because I longed for that relationship with Jesus.

And there was something so comforting to hear his word. But I had this whole other lifestyle that I was managing. That was totally contrary to, God's plan for my life.”

For 15 years David struggled to find peace only to give into his addictions… almost overdosing at times. Every attempt to quit drugs and alcohol was unsuccessful “Drunk out of my mind, high out of my mind on marijuana. Weeping… Desperate… And that happened enough to where I recognized that the only way, I can get free is if I make Jesus the Lord of my life,” he said. “And I was terrified of that decision, because, it wasn't just raising my hand and going forward, I understood that making Jesus the Lord of my life really means every decision after that, I have to weigh and consider, is Jesus the Lord of my life in this decision?”

David realized his life was a wreck because of the choices he’d made… he needed to fully surrender to God. So, he poured out all his alcohol and threw out all his drugs, then walked into his parents’ church during a baptismal service

“All the Lord was wanting was my corporation,” David said. “And so I showed up at church. I humbled myself, and I got in the baptismal. Just so willing to serve God with all of my heart. And I went into the waters, I came out and the love of God was all over me. I could sense the unconditional love of God was melting the chains that I had created in my life from poor decisions, but Jesus set me free from those things.”
That day he was miraculously set free from his addictions. “I had zero withdrawals. The Lord healed my mind, it was like the Lord healed my liver and my kidneys from the abuse,” David said. “He healed my lungs from all the smoking I did in those years. I mean it was truly a miracle. And I feel so blessed that the Lord did that for me.”

Today David has a life he never thought was possible and he eagerly shares the joy that’s found in Christ when you surrender to his love.

“I’m not hitting the bottle or rolling a joint. I get to open my Bible. I get to fellowship with my wife. I get to hold my baby girl, and now we have a second child on the way, a baby boy. I'm in awe of the life that God has blessed me with today,” David said. “I want to let you know that God's plan that he has for your life is so much bigger, so amazing that you could even ask, think, or imagine to just allow the Lord to open up your heart and receive Jesus into your life. He will set you free.”
