A 10-Year-Old Shares What Happened When Floods Hit His Town

When torrential rains triggered devastating floods across Veracruz, Mexico, rivers burst their banks. Entire neighborhoods were inundated, forcing families into a terrifying fight to survive. The rapid speed of the disaster left the entire neighborhood stranded and in a state of sheer panic.

A young boy named Iker will never forget what happened in his town called Alamo.  "The night before the flood, everything felt like any other day," Iker recalled, describing the harrowing night. "Then it happened. We all tried to bring people near us into our house. I was afraid the water would keep rising because it had already reached the third floor of our house. If it went higher we would have no other place to go,” said Iker.

The disaster claimed lives, cut off entire communities and triggered desperate shortages of food and clean water. And the chaos of the aftermath left a deep, painful impression on the young boy's mind. "I kept thinking about the day before, when I saw a man being carried away by the water," Iker shared. "I watched people fight, even over a box of cereal, over anything as long as it was food. I still think about things from the flood, because some things cannot be erased."

Then thanks to you, Operation Blessing arrived in Iker’s town and set up a community kitchen and served thousands of hot meals. Iker soon stepped in to help. Being part of the solution brought a new sense of purpose and joy to the young volunteer. "I felt very happy that Operation Blessing was able to bring help," Iker declared. "I was excited too, because I never thought I would be helping in a kitchen!"

Relief teams also brought spiritual comfort, introducing children to CBN’s Superbook animated  Bible Stories. The stories provided a source of immense strength as the children processed the disaster. "My favorite episode of Superbook is David and Goliath," Iker explained. "Through Superbook, I learned that we can always count on God to face someone bigger and stronger than us."

And Iker's words expressed the thoughts of so many: gratitude for the help that YOUR gifts to Operation Blessing made possible.  "I want to thank the people who have donated to help us," Iker said, looking around his recovering neighborhood. "Our town of Alamo is almost like it was before the flood. Thank you very much to everyone!"
