• Mary – She was still grief stricken from the loss of her younger son Jason three years prior. As a result, Mother’s Day was always a difficult day to navigate. A few days later, while cleaning out a closet she came upon a box with some old magazines. Inside, under some of the magazines was an unstamped envelope, addressed to the local newspaper. Thankful for the opportunity to hold her child, Darla promised to pray for him everyday. The years passed and Danella had a daughter named Amanda who married a man named Chad. Danella and her family liked him, but felt like he had a chip on his shoulder. They discovered that he had been given up for adoption.
Chad still carried bitterness because he felt like his biological mom did not love him. When Amanda became pregnant, Chad decided to access his birth records. He learned that Danella was the nurse on duty that night when he was born. He also learned that his birth mother Darla loved him with an unselfish love and struggled with the decision to give him up. Danella shared with Chad that she allowed Darla to hold him the night he was born. He later met Darla, her husband, and their four boys. He also discovered that Darla had kept her promise and prayed for him everyday.
• Yvonne and Vivian –Yvonne’s daughter Vicki was severly brain damaged at the age of one from encephalitis. When Vicki reached her twenties, Yvonne discovered there were few options to provide a fulfilling life for adults who are neurodiverse. As a result, Yvonne and her other daughter Vivian founded Brookwood Community for Adults with Special Needs in Brookshire, Texas. Yvonne began working with kids in her backyard teaching them how to move on trampolines, climb ladders, or crawl through tubes. Vicki learned how to grasp, lift, and release things which enabled her to work in the horticultural department. She learned to grasp a potted plant, lift it, and release it in its proper place. Today Brookwood Community for Adults with Special Needs is considered by many to be one of the premier organizations in the nation. “Louise and I know Brookwood very well. Our son Grant lives there,” shares SQuire.
