Making Beautiful Bouquets
CBN.com Chinwad lives in an adivasi (tribal) slum on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Most of the 200 families that live in this slum have only one main source of livelihood, making artificial flower bouquets. The men, women, and children work together putting the petals together.
They work day and night, and the next morning some continue to work as the young and able collect the flowers that are ready. They sell the arrangements in the city. Though they do not make much money, they manage to make a living out of it.
Chinwad struggles as he puts together flower arrangements because his eyesight is worsening. He holds the petals closely and tries to find the opening through which he can put the binding thread. It takes him a while to do it, and he is not able to get the alignment right. He always worries whether his arrangements work.
When Operation Blessing entered the slums one day, Chinwad became hopeful. Many people stood in line for registration. Operation Blessing treated 275 needy people, including Chinwad, providing free general medical, dental, and eye care services. Everyone received this service with great eagerness because even though there were private hospitals nearby, they did not have the money to see a doctor and pay the fees.
“I am not able to make a good number of flowers like before, and I can’t make enough money. My eyesight is failing,” Chinwad told the doctor.
An eye test revealed that he had problems seeing things up close. OB gave Chinwad a pair of glasses.
“I am able to see clearly now,” Chinwad said. “I never knew that a pair of glasses would make so much difference in my vision.”
Chinwad wore his new glasses to work and noticed remarkable improvement in his eye sight.
“Thank you Operation Blessing! With my eyeglasses, I am able to work faster and will make more beautiful flowers, I will have more money to look after my family,” he said.
