- [Announcer] This is "CBN NewsWatch."
- Thanks for joining usthis Tuesday, August 24th,
I'm Mark Martin.
Today, President Biden facing a deadline
over his decision on whether to extend
the stay of US troops in Afghanistan.
He faces strong criticism for his handling
of the pullout, both at home and abroad.
Now that the FDA has approved
the Pfizer vaccine for COVID, what's next?
We'll talk to our medicalreporter, Lorie Johnson,
about dealing with the Delta variant,
the impact of COVID on kids now
and possible mask and vaccine mandates.
The big budget battle in Washington,
Democrats versus Democrats in the House
over when to vote on the president's huge
three and a half trillion dollar budget,
a bill opposed by every Republican
and as the school year is set to begin,
we'll hear how one ministryis linking students together
with churches and ministries.
Those stories and more it'sall today on "NewsWatch."
One week, that's how long the US has
to get all of our troopsout of Afghanistan
according to the current August31st deadline next Tuesday.
The Taliban calling that date a red line,
but President Biden has remained committed
to get all of the Americans out
of the country who want to leave.
Now military advisershave given the White House
a deadline of their own:
if we're staying, thedecision has to be made today.
That deadline comes as theWashington Post reports today
that the CIA directorheld a secret meeting
in Kabul Monday, likelydiscussing the impending deadline.
National security correspondent
Caitlin Burke brings us the story.
- President Biden's national security team
remains confident that all Americans
who want to leave Afghanistancan be out by August 31st.
Realistically, that leaves only
a few more days for evacuations,
the remainder of thetime needed to withdraw
the 5,800 troops on the ground in Kabul.
- The goal is to get as manypeople out as fast as possible.
- [Burke] Still, the situationin Kabul remains dangerous.
Many desperate evacueesreporting the violence
surrounding the airportis keeping them out.
The Pentagon acknowledgingtwo specific incidents
where special forcesand American helicopters
went into Kabul to extractsome 350 Americans.
And National SecurityAdvisor Jake Sullivan
says there's a plan to getthe remaining Americans
who want to leave to the airport.
- We've Contacted Americansstill in Afghanistan
by email, by phone, by text
to give them specific instructions.
We have developed a methodto safely and efficiently
transfer groups of Americancitizens onto the airfield.
For operational reasons,I'm not going to go
into further detail on this
- [Burke] White House, press secretary, Jen Psaki,
pushing back at a reporter
who referred to Americansas being stranded.
- First of all, I think it's responsible
to say Americans arestranded, they are not.
We are committed to bringing Americans
who want to come home home.
- [Burke] Meanwhile, lawmakers are trying to get
to the bottom of whathappened in Afghanistan.
Members of the houseintelligence committee
meeting with intelligenceofficials on Monday
to discuss the fallout.
- We view this, as Isaid during the hearing,
as the beginning of vigorous oversight
of what went wrong in ourdeparture from Afghanistan.
- President Biden meetswith European allies
during a G7 meetingtoday where he's expected
to face pressure to extendthe Kabul evacuation deadline.
Katelyn Burke, CBN News.
- Pfizer's COVID vaccinehas won full approval
from the Food and Drug Administration
for anyone 16 and older, theFDA's acting commissioner,
calling it a pivotalmoment for our country.
President Biden also hailingit as a major milestone.
Since Pfizer's two doseshot was authorized
for emergency use in December,
more than 188 million havebeen administered by the US,
in the US that is.
Daily COVID cases nowaverage around 137,000.
That's up 237% in the last month.
George Thomas has the story.
- [Thomas] PresidentBiden moved quickly to use
the FDA's action as anopportunity to once again
encourage unvaccinatedAmericans to get the shot.
- If you're one of themillions of Americans who said
that they will not get the shot
until it has full andfinal approval of the FDA,
it has now happened.
The moment you've beenwaiting for is here.
It's time for you togo get your vaccination
and get it today.
- [Thomas] Current FDA head calling
the agency's decision a milestone.
- [Woodcock] This is apivotal moment for our country
in the fight against the pandemic.
The public can be confidentthat this vaccine meets
the FDA's gold standards for safety,
effectiveness, and manufacturing quality.
- [Thomas] So far, 60%of adults 18 and over
have been fully vaccinated.
That leaves more than 80million folks out there
eligible to get the shot.
New York city's mayor wantsto see those numbers shrink,
announcing today vaccine mandates
for the nation's largest school system.
- This will require thatall staff of every kind,
principals, jurors, custodians, food service, you name it,
needs to have at least onedose by September 27th.
- [Thomas] With Pfizer's approval,
the US Surgeon General says he expects
more mandates from private businesses,
colleges and even localand state governments.
A survey back in June found that
three in 10 unvaccinatedadults would be more likely
to get the shots if avaccine were fully approved.
- For businesses and universitiesthat have been thinking
about putting vaccinerequirements in place
in order to create safer spaces
for people to work and learn,
I think that this move fromthe FDA, when it comes,
will actually help them to move forward.
- [Thomas] The virus continuesto rage around the country,
accelerated by the Delta variant.
Dr. Joseph Varon of Houston'sUnited Memorial Medical Center
saying the health systemin his city has collapsed.
- And the biggest question iswhen is this going to stop?
- [Thomas] He says right now,33 of the city's 35 hospitals
have stopped taking new patients.
- People talk about thecollapse of the medical system.
And I believe that in this,
the largest medical city in the world,
we have gotten to that collapse,
because if you have a heartattack, or if you have a stroke,
you are out of luckbecause most of the beds
allocated for those kinds of patients
are being occupied forpatients that have COVID.
- [Thomas] George Thomas, CBN News.
- All right, our medical reporter,
Lorie Johnson is withus now, Lorie, welcome.
Now, should this approval convince
some skeptics that the vaccine is safe
and should we expectapproval for the Moderna
Johnson and Johnson vaccines?
- Well when you talkabout people's attitudes
towards getting the vaccines,
we now know that 80 million Americans
still have not gotten their vaccines.
And recently the KaiserFamily Foundation did a survey
and found that one-third of all the people
who have chosen not toget vaccinated so far,
a third of them say thatwhen one of the vaccines
does receive that full approval,
then they would be morelikely to take the vaccine.
So it does appear that the vaccine numbers
will now go up because ofthe Pfizer full approval.
Now Moderna and Johnson andJohnson, you asked about those,
they have not gotten full approval yet,
and it's going to be some time.
Moderna just now filed theirapplication with the FDA.
And it takes several months from when
the application is filedto when it's approved,
and Johnson and Johnson has not even
made their application yet.
You know, the application process,
they just go through all of thedata with a fine tooth comb.
They go out to wherethese vaccines are made,
the manufacturingfacilities and inspect them
to make sure that they're clean.
And they also have to determinethat the vaccine shelf life,
because of course they have to put
the expiration date on the packages.
So this is why it takes so long.
So it looks like the Pfizer vaccine
is going to be the only one
that has full approval for some time now.
- Lorie, deaths are risingagain, back up to 1000 a day.
We're also seeing rising cases for kids.
How effective are the vaccines against
the Delta variant in kids?
- Well, that's a great question.
And you know, your firstpoint is just so horrible
because we saw deathsnationwide dip down below 100
for the whole country atthe very beginning of June,
cases dip below the 10,000 mark
at the very beginning of June.
Way back at the beginning of the pandemic,
Dr. Anthony Fauci was asked the question,
how do we know when the pandemic is over?
Are we going to try to get to zero cases?
And he said, no, anythingbelow 10,000 is a victory.
And Mark, we got thereat the beginning of June.
And now here we are at150,000 cases a day,
deaths went from less than a hundred
to now over a thousand deaths per day.
But to answer your question,
most of the hospitalizationsand most of the deaths
are by far among unvaccinated people.
So we do know that the vaccines work,
they offer some protection,
but sadly not nearly as muchprotection as they once did,
before the Delta variant.
And we also have reason to believe that
after about six or eight months,
that the strength of thevaccine sort of wane.
So for two reasons, we'renot seeing the vaccines
as effective as they once were,
but still very effective at preventing
hospitalization and death.
But you are seeing a lot of people
who are fully vaccinated getting sick.
We saw Max Lucado, we sawSenator Lindsey Graham,
Governor Greg Abbott of Texas.
A lot of these people aresaying, yes, I got COVID,
yes, I was fully vaccinated, but I'm glad I got vaccinated
because now I know that my sickness
really won't be that bad.
And sure enough, a lot ofthese people who do get sick,
they're only sick for a few days.
- Do you think we're going to see vaccine
and mask mandates acrossthe country Lorie?
- Absolutely, we're already seeing them.
We've already seen thembefore the Pfizer vaccine
got the full FDA approval,
but a lot of people werehanging back and waiting
to institute the vaccine mandates
until that one of thesevaccines had the full approval,
like the US military, we know that now
they are going to implementtheir vaccine mandate,
a mandate that all troopshave a vaccination,
probably by September 20th.
- And we're almost out of time,
but what's on your healthy living program?
- Well, today we're talkingabout depression and sadly,
and probably not a surpriseto you or our viewers,
depression rates have goneup during the pandemic.
And so I'm speaking to anexpert about how to recognize
whether you're depressedand how to get help.
And some other ways toalleviate depression
that have been shown to work,
believe it or not thingslike diet and exercise.
It may sound strange, but thefoods that we often reach for,
the comfort foods when we're feeling down
actually can make ourdepression worse sometimes.
- [Martin] All right, ourmedical reporter, Lorie Johnson,
Thank you as always for your insights.
- [Johnson] My pleasure
- And of course you canwatch "Healthy Living."

- Welcome back to NewsWatch,
a major political battleunderway in Washington.
Democrats versus Democrats,
over president Biden's huge
three and a half trillion budget plan.
Tensions flared overnight as a band
of nine moderate Democratsthreatened to withhold
their votes for the billbecause they want the House
to first approve a $1 trillioninfrastructure package.
The moderates won and nowDemocrats will try again
to work out a deal.
Tara Mergener has the story.
- A house procedural vote is the next test
for President Biden'ssprawling economic agenda.
The Senate has already passed both bills,
a $1.2 trillion infrastructure agreement
and a three and a halftrillion dollar budget
that would expand the social safety net
while hiking taxes on upper earners.
Coaxing her caucus in a letter,
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi insists
delays will put the party's policy goals
for President Biden'stransformative vision
and historic progress in jeopardy.
- The vision is to build back better.
- The Rules Committee will come to order.
- [Mergener] Houselawmakers are back in DC
after a shorter than usual August recess,
the White House endorsing Pelosi's plans
for a procedural vote that wouldadvance the infrastructure,
social spending and voting rights plan
to be followed by a budget resolution.
- You take this bill togetherwith the American Rescue Plan
and the reconciliation billthat's getting underway,
we are implementing oncein a generation policies
that will change people'slives for the better.
Housing, clean energy, dealingwith the climate crisis.
- [Mergener] If her partymembers stick together,
it would allow those measures to pass
without a Republican vote.
- This is the first hearing it's had
in the House of Representatives,
and it's going straight to the floor?
With no amendments by anyDemocrats or Republicans?
I think that that's a broken process.
- [Mergener] That party unity, however, could be loosening.
Fearing the budget plancould be scaled back,
Pelosi and progressiveswant that bill passed first.
Nine moderate Democrats concerned
over the $3.5 trillion price tag
are threatening to vote against it,
unless the bipartisan infrastructurebill is first in line.
Two weeks ago, the Senatepassed that $1.2 trillion
infrastructure plan with helpfrom 19 Republican votes.
- It's been a long and winding road,
but we have persistedand now we have arrived.
- But the massive budget spending plan
has zero GOP support, meaning it could
be killed by Democrats.
To win over bothprogressives and centrists,
Pelosi has outlined a strategyto vote on the two bills
only after the Senate hasapproved both of them.
To pull it off, she could only lose
three house votes in the process.
In Washington, Tara Mergener, CBN News.
- Still ahead, with schoolabout to start up again,
we're going to hear about a ministry
that's connecting studentswith ministries and churches.
It's right after this.

Summer is coming to an end,
and that means students arereturning to the classroom.
No doubt, this school year will be filled
with many different challenges,
but one ministry is helpinghigh school and college students
prepare for what's ahead.
Campus Renewal and Every Student Sent,
a community-basedplatform connects students
to churches and ministries.
Campus Renewal President Jeremy Story
spoke with our Prayer Linkabout an event they're hosting
to mobilize students for the mission.
- Tell us about the back-to-school event
that you're hosting.
- Sure, Every StudentSent is really a coalition
of a variety of college ministries,
pretty much all of themacross the country,
and high schools andhigh school ministries
and everybody involvedfrom youth to college.
And so what it allows students to do
is to be able to go online and be able
to connect with ministries and churches
and with each others, it's not just
with ministries and churches,
they'll be able to see eachother on the same campus,
so it provides them with community.
They can also receivediscipleship material,
and so what this event isis just to raise awareness
that there is a tool like this,
and also to provideresources and encouragement
to students who are headed off to college,
either for the first time
or maybe they're sophomoresor juniors at this point,
we also have contenton that live broadcast
that'll be coming and useful for parents
or Christian high school administrators,
or just Christians who arehigh school administrators,
or even youth leaders, thinkingthrough this coming year.
We really are mostly targeting students
in terms of those transitioning
out of high school into college,
but there will be somethingon there for everyone
involved in this process.
- Love it, and Jeremy, one of the things
that you actually encourage students to do
is to be the change bymobilizing their culture
for missions and revival
at their high school or college campus.
Talk about that for a bit.
- Yeah, in essence, thisis a short interview,
but in essence, you know, the church is discipling
for a world that no longer exists.
And we must change how we disciple
our young and our older,in the sense that we are
discipling as if weare Jews sitting around
in Jerusalem and everybody understands us
and they know our culture
and they understand theBible or all the things.
However, we really need to be discipling
like we are the Jews in Babylon,
the Jews who are in a foreign culture,
the culture that does not understand
some of their basic assumptions.
And so what happens is oftentimes,
in the best case scenarios,
we fill students full of Bible knowledge
and full of good truth.
But when they're faced withsome of the extreme things
that they are faced with on a daily basis,
on the internet or in theirschools or their classrooms,
with their friends, they do not know
how those truths apply to the things
that are immediately around them.
And so teaching them howto hear from the Lord
and engage others in mission,
basically how to be inthe world but not of it,
which was Jesus's prayer in John 17.
That is absolutely critical.
It's not enough just tosort of teach students
how to share their faith.
We really need to teach students,
like we would train a missionary
that's going to China or North Korea.
We need to teach them how to be
in the midst of a very dark world,
but yet bring the light there.
And then when they can do that,
they can do that not only in college,
but also in theirprofession after college.
- Jeremy, what role canparents play in this?
Do they have a role?
- Yeah they play a huge role.
In fact, even more so thanI think their local church.
Local church is very important,
local ministry is very important,
but parents absolutely integral.
And so what I would say is if your student
is in high school now or middleschool or elementary school,
think through literally everyday, as much as you can.
How and what am I doing right now
so that whether it's a daily occurrence,
a movie they watched orsomething they encountered
on the internet or somethingthat a classmate told them,
how can I turn that into alearning experience to help them
not learn how to sort ofavoid those situations,
but how do I teach them howto embed themselves there
and successfully bring theirfaith and grow their faith
in those dark environments.
Because we don't live in a place
where we can just simply avoid everything.
That's not a luxury we have.
really shouldn't have ever had,
we especially don't have it now.
So if parents will begin from a young age,
all the way to, even if you'vegot a junior or a senior,
or maybe you're just sending someone off
to college right now, you can do that.
- What's the website?
- Yeah, EveryStudentSent.org.
If you just simply go there,
