Pump the Brakes: Republicans Fight COVID Plan That's Packed with $1T in Democrat Pet Projects

Pump the Brakes: Republicans Fight COVID Plan That's Packed with $1T in Democrat Pet Projects Read Transcript

- The House is expected to pass

President Biden's $1.9trillion COVID relief package

later this week.

But in the Senate, Republicansplan to put up a fight.

- Every single dollar we spend on COVID

is something we're borrowingfrom our children or from China

or from other places.

So before we borrow more money

to be able to spend on what people want,

we need to make sure that we're covering

only the essential needs,

so let's borrow what weneed to get through it

but not more than we need to.

- [Caitlin] While Republicans

and fiscal conservativescan get behind the money

going towards targeted COVID relief

like unemployment benefits

and funding for vaccine distribution,

they're concerned about the pork

attached to this latest relief package.

- So, when those realneeds drive up the deficit,

you're gonna have to tolerate it.

But when we're talking about pet projects

for members of Congress,

absolutely should not bepart of the conversation.

- [Caitlin] In February, theCongressional Budget Office

projected the 2021 federal budget deficit

to be $2.3 trillion, thesecond highest in our history,

and that doesn't include

this new $1.9 trillion relief package.

- When you look atindustrialized nations right now,

there's only a handful of countries

that are in as bad offiscal shape as we are.

When you look at the size of our economy

relative to our debt, we're atabout 100% debt to GDP ratio.

That's bad news.

That puts us in thesame boat as the Greeces

and Portugals and Italys of the world.

- Still, the Biden administration

is already laying the groundwork

for an additional economic relief package

focused on infrastructure,

some predicting it could costanother 2 to $4 trillion.
