- Veronica was dying from a tumor
on her right adrenal gland.
She urgently needed surgery.
She remembered when she knewsomething was seriously wrong.
- The doorbell rang
and I went to open it,but my leg wouldn't work.
There was a sharp pain, likeI got hit by electricity.
- Veronica is a 40 year oldsingle mom from Ukraine.
After her husband left,
she was raising her two children alone.
Then she took in two nieces
and a nephew who had beenabandoned at an orphanage.
- I just knew I had to dosomething for them too.
They are poor, but weare together and a family
- Veronica and the children were making it
on a small government pension.
But she couldn't affordto pay for the surgery.
And she had to depend on heryoung children more than ever.
- She couldn't a walkand had to stay in bed.
We went to grocery shopping.
We had to take care of our mom.
- There are no grandparents
or relatives to take them in.
If I died, there is nobody.
