of sexual orientation.
Catholic Social Services holdsa biblically based belief
that marriage can only bebetween a man and a woman.
It hadn't actually turned away
any gay couples who wanted to foster,
but just that belief about marriage alone
got them booted out of
the foster care businesswith Philadelphia.
Becket is fighting forCatholic Social Services,
calling this a violation
of the agency's religious liberty.
- This is a really landmarkcase for religious liberty.
It's about the power of the government.
Whether the government can force you
to change what you believe
when you're trying to bea part of the solution.
When you're trying toidentify a social ill
and really be there to make a difference.
- [Paul] Philadelphia's tossingout Catholic Social Services
had an immediate negative impact.
- [Montse] The day afterthis policy was put in place,
the city of Philadelphia saidthat there were 300 homes
that were needed for these children.
- [Paul] One of thefoster moms in this case
says Catholic SocialServices could have helped
many of those childrenwho went unfostered.
- Our communities are negatively effected.
We have more crime.
It's just an extremelyvicious, non-stop growing cycle
of devastation.
- [Paul] Alvarado says governmentcan't just order people
of faith to changetheir religious beliefs.
- A lot of people don'trealize that religious beliefs
are not like policies.
Religious beliefs arethings that come from
the foundational teachings of a religion.
They are very, very old.
- So you can't just swap them out
for what governmentsays you should believe.
