'It's...Graphic': Abby Johnson Unveils Preview of 'Provocative' RNC Abortion Speech
Read Transcript
- Abby Johnson spent eight years
working for Planned Parenthood,
growing more uneasy with what she saw,
until she quit in 2009
and began to advocatefor life in the womb.
Today, she's the founder ofAnd Then There Were None,
a ministry focused on helpingabortion clinic workers
who want to leave.
And tonight she's speaking
at the Republican National Convention.
Abby, thanks for joining us.
- Of course, thanks for having me on.
- Well, I'm curious,
of course the Trumpcampaign could have chosen
any number of pro-lifespeakers for tonight,
why do you think that they chose you?
- Well, I think because I have, you know,
a very real lived experienceinside of Planned Parenthood
and, you know, our presidentwanted to highlight that.
He wanted to highlightwhat actually takes place
inside of abortion facilities,
particularly our country'slargest abortion provider,
Planned Parenthood,
and he wanted specificallyfor abortion to be exposed
for the barbaric practice that it is.
You know, he is pro-life
and he wants people to remember the unborn
whenever they go to thepolls this November.
- Now, when you are saying
all these things thatthe president wanted,
did the campaign ask you totalk about certain things?
What kind of collaborationdid you have with the campaign
on your speech?
- I did.
I spoke directly toTrump's head speech writer.
I also worked with variousspeech writers throughout,
you know, working up my remarks
and, you know, they had specific things
that they wanted me to reallytouch on, which was great,
because they wereactually all of the things
that I wanted to touch on as well.
So we worked well incollaboration with one another.
- Is there a particularaudience you have in mind
for your speech tonight,
or particular impact you're hoping for?
- You know, I'm really,honestly, I'm really hoping
that people who are sort of onthe fence about Donald Trump,
maybe people who areconsidering voting third party,
maybe who are just unsure,
I'm really hoping that theyare going to tune in tonight.
I'm really hoping thatthey are going to listen
to what I have to say.
That they will listen towhat is actually on the line,
that there are real lives, there are real children
who are going to be affectedby our vote in November,
and that they will vote for life first
when they go to the polls.
- Abby, the Trump Campaign has released
the president's second term goals,
right now they don'tinclude the fight for life.
I'm wondering, what is your take on that
and what are you hoping forif the president is reelected?
- That's very, very typical.
I can't think actually of any time
really in the past few campaigns
where a presidential campaignactually listed life issues
on a bullet pointed list.
So that's very, that's very typical.
I'm not too terribly concerned with that.
The president has put forward
an unprecedented numberof policies for the unborn
over the past four years,
he continues to make life a priority.
Every time he steps on the stage,
he's talking about theatrocities that take place
inside of the abortion industry.
He's made it very clear
that the unborn is a priority for him.
He's made that clear throughout the RNC,
by having a former PlannedParenthood director
step up on stage and exposeabortion for what it is.
So that's not concerning to me at all.
- All right, well Iapologize for cutting in.
We're looking forwardto your speech tonight.
Thank you, Abby Johnson.
- Thank you so much.
