CBN News Chief Political Analyst David Brody with the Big Takeaways from the Democrats' Convention
Read Transcript
- And joining us now with more
is CBN chief politicalanalyst, David Brody.
David, with the convention wrapping up,
what are the major takeaways so far?
- Well, I think the big takeaway
is that Democrats are staying away
from laying out any sortof liberal policy positions
and trying to appeal tothe rust belt, blue-collar,
center-left Democrat.
That's the playbook, and here's why, Mark.
In essence,
Democrat officials thatI've been talking to say,
look, we understand thatit is orange man bad.
And in other words, Donald Trump
is gonna rile up theprogressive left no matter what.
So they believe even though you see a lot
of folks like Barack Obama
and others saying yougotta get out to vote,
you gotta get out to vote,
well, obviously, they do,
but they believe thatthe energy on the left
is gonna be there no matter what
even if Biden isn'tnecessarily Bernie Sanders.
They say, look, it's orange man bad,
and that's gonna be enough.
So therefore, what they need to do
is really work on thoseblue-collar, center-left Democrats
basically in the rust belt,
Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin.
That's the ticket to theWhite House, they believe,
and that's why you've been hearing so much
of that type of center-left talk this week
at the Democratic National Convention.
- What could we expect of JoeBiden's acceptance speech?
- Well, look Mark, just betweenyou, me, the four walls,
and everybody watching at home,
it's a pretty low bar.
I mean, let's be honest,he's gonna be on prompter.
He's 77.
He's lost a step or two, we know this.
And so he's gonna be in the10 o'clock hour on prompter,
and the bar is low.
And what I mean by the bar being low
is that he can't stumble too much.
He's gonna have a couple of stumbles,
but he can't look like hedoesn't quite know where he's at.
I'm not trying to be funny here.
I'm being very serious.
There's some real cognitive issues
that he's gonna have to deal with.
And how is he gonna look tonight?
And I think that's gonnabe what I'm looking for
and what most of the country
is going to either see a Joe Biden
that looks like he's ready,
that he can handle the job at 77.
Not 73, Mark, 77.
If not, it could be atragic night for Joe Biden.
This is must-see TV tonight.
If the prompter goes down, honestly,
if the prompter goes down
and he's not quite sure where to go,
how is he gonna ad libthrough some of this?
It could be real nasty.
- There has been a lot of criticism
of President Trump, David.
Do you think we're gonnasee a strong response
from Republicans next week
during the Republican National Convention?
- Yeah, I think there's gonnabe some of that, for sure.
But look, I think, ultimately,
can the character attacks really work
on Donald Trump anymore?
Everybody knows who Donald Trump is.
So look, they try, they, the Democrats,
tried to play the character issue in 2016.
It didn't work.
Now the question here for Republicans,
and Donald Trump, specifically,
is there too much water in the boat?
In other words, willJoe Biden be able to win
in 2020 based on the factthat everybody in the country
or at least enough of folksare saying enough is enough?
It's too much chaos. It's too much craziness.
That's what the Bidencampaign is banking on.
But next week at theRepublican National Convention,
you're gonna see quite a bitof results-oriented speeches.
In essence, basically, thispresident can get things done.
As much as you might notlike him, he delivers.
- Okay, all right, David Brody, our chief political analyst,
thank you so much for yourinsights on the convention.
And I know you'll be watching it tonight.
- Well, for sure, Mark, thank you.
- All right. thank you, sir.
