Read Transcript
- And we are joined now byCBN's political correspondent,
David Brody, to discussthe Democrats' night.
David, I wanted to gowith a little bit of a
baseball analogy here.
Were there any home runs last night,
and what kind of hitting doyou see happening tonight?
- Well, here's the goodnews for Democrats, Heather.
The home run was Michelle Obama.
Here's the bad news for Democrats.
She's not running in 2020.
Joe Biden is, and where was he last night?
Look, I watched all two hoursof this, every single minute,
and the only time I really saw Joe Biden
other than in clips of video
was where he was kind of hosting,
like Wolf Blitzer in "TheSituation Room," some sort of,
you know, tell me what you think
we should do in the country.
He's asking mayors and governors
and I'm thinking tomyself, why in the world
is Joe Biden asking themwhat they think when...
Isn't the whole point to...
What does he think, exactly?
So, look, I thought this was kind of
part late night infomercial,
which all conventions are pretty much,
part telethon, and part Academy Awards
that went about an hour ortwo long with Eva Longoria.
Look, I thought the wholething looked a bit contrived.
- It is really hard to keepit exciting when it's virtual.
I wanted to ask you alittle more about Biden
and the fact that we arenot hearing from him,
really not seeing him inunscripted environments.
Fox News host Chris Wallace
has called it the basement strategy.
What is going on?
Is the party trying to confine him?
- Heather, let me just be very clear,
and I've said this on "FaithNation" and a few other places,
but I just wanna be very clear.
I mean, he's lost a step,
and I don't say that in anysort of obvious derogatory way.
I mean, that is the analyticalview, not just from me,
but quite a few others out there.
The Joe Biden of 2016 isnot the Joe Biden of 2020.
He has lost a step mentally.
I don't think there'sany question about it.
And it has raised a whole host of issues.
And so what are they doing?
Well, here's Joe Biden, pretty much there,
they want to keep them inthe basement, sequestered.
It's kind of a preventdefense football strategy,
to use another sports analogy.
In other words, you're upby a couple of touchdowns,
at least that's what theBiden campaign thinks,
and why trot him out theremore than you really have to?
And I think that's what's going on.
Though, when he wants to doa hard-hitting interview,
I guess Chris Wallace isn'this cup of tea, but Cardi B is,
which makes you wonder about,
if Joe Biden can get that job done.
- Right, well, and it'sreally gonna be interesting
when you think aboutthe debates coming up.
Is there any possibility
that he is gonna indeed step aside
and Kamala Harris wouldindeed run for president
after the convention?
There has been some discussion of that.
- Now I understand there'sbeen some discussion of it,
and to be clear, that's fromfolks like Chris Cillizza
over at "The WashingtonPost," a pretty liberal guy,
and there's been other, there'sbeen chatter in the media.
Look, my sources, atleast, on the Democrat side
are telling me there'snot a chance of that.
Now, having said that, you never know exactly
what's gonna happen, butno, I don't see that at all
before the Novemberelection, and even in between
that November and January time period,
if Biden were to win.
So no, I don't think that'sa possibility at this point.
- All right, and just briefly,
the president's got anotherfull schedule today.
It seems that he is more aggressively,
perhaps, than previousincumbent presidents,
really trying to give outhis own message this week
and really create his own events
to counter what the Democrats are doing.
Do you see it that way?
- Yeah. I mean, I think aggressive
and Donald Trump go hand in hand.
I mean, look, BarackObama has done this before
in previous years, in 2012,
when the Republicans had their convention.
But yeah, overall there is typically
a counter-programming aspect to any time
the other party is in convention week.
Having said that, Donald Trump likes to
kind of march to the beat of his own drum
and be his own man and wantsto drive the narrative,
and you can be sure he's gonnabe doing that on steroids
a lot more than manyother previous candidates.
- Absolutely.
All right, David Brody, thanks for your time.
- Thanks, Heather.
