- Wow.
I'm so glad that God made trees.
They give us shade and foodand something to climb.
- Yeah.
Wow.
I think that I shallnever see a smart poem
as lovely as a tree.
- Hmm.
I think that we shouldprobably start the show now.
- Hey everyone. Welcometo the Super Book Show.
(air whooshing)
(air whooshing)
(air whooshing)
- Right now, we're undera very special tree
at Hampton University in Virginia.
- The Emancipation Tree.
It was selected by theNational Geographic Society
as one of the top 10great trees of the world.
- Under this very tree in 1863,
Abraham Lincoln's EmancipationProclamation to end slavery
was read for the first time in the South.
- Cool, huh?
This is why we thought it wouldbe a great place to tell you
how amazing trees are.
- And how trees canshow how amazing God is.
- Yeah, so Malachi,
did you know that trees playa big role in the Bible?
- As a matter of fact, I did.
After God and human beings, trees are mentioned more
than any other living thing.
- From the beginning of Genesis.
- The tree of theknowledge of good and evil
and the tree of life.
- To the end of Revelation,
the tree of life makesan appearance again.
Check it out!
- In the Super Book Bible App?
- In the Super Book Bible App.
- And Kaitlin, did you know that the Bible
talks about how trees communicatewith each other and God?
- Yep, 1 Chronicles says,"The trees of the forest
sing joy to the Lord."
- That makes me think of theEnts from "Lord of the Rings"
or the talking trees of Narnia or Groot!
- Who?
- Groot, from "Guardians of the Galaxy"?
- Oh, oh, oh, I thought you said root.
(silly upbeat music)
Okay, okay, okay, we're gettinga little off track here.
- Sorry, but I love baby Groot.
But back to the Bible.
Aren't some of the versestalking about singing
or talking trees, simply poetry?
- Poetry, yes, but sometimesit's more than that.
In Romans, Paul talks about how creation
is groaning, longing to befree when Jesus comes again.
That's theology and and...
- And what?
- And some scientists andforesters are even saying
that trees can communicatewith each other.
- No way, really?
(silly tapping music)
I don't hear any chit chat.
- Well, I'll tell you if you come back.
(silly tapping music)
(laughs)
They don't speak human.
But they can communicate with each other
and share resources.
- How?
- Their social network, their roots.
It's also called the wood wide web.
There's a book about it,"The Hidden Life of Trees."
- So what do they say to each other?
"I need more friends, Ithink I'll branch out a bit."
(comedic drum riffing)- Ha ha, not exactly.
One of their main conversations
actually has to do with fear.
You know, they warneach other about danger,
droughts, and even insect attacks.
(insect chirping)
- So what do they do whenthey get the distress call?
- They change their behavior.
- Hmm, need an example.
- I got it.
You know how giraffeseat leaves in Africa?
- [Malachi] Yeah, acacia trees, right?
- Right.
Well, the munchingactually hurts the trees.
So they send out adistress signal in the form
of ethylene gas.
- Yuck, gas.
I bet that turns off the giraffes.
- Not really, but thetrees hear the signal
and send tannins into their leaves.
Tannins are a substancethat in large doses
can kill a giraffe.
- Oh no, poor giraffes.
- Don't worry.
The giraffes are aware of the conversation
and they'll either eat into the wind
so the other trees don't smell the gas
or the next grazing tree will be farther
than the gas can travel.
- That's amazing.
Or should I say, tree-mendous.
(comedic drum riffing)(laughing)
- Only God can create trees,or giraffes for that matter.
- Can I share with youanother Bible verse?
- Be my guest.
- It's from Revelationsand it describes heaven.
"On either side of theriver was the tree of life,
bearing 12 kinds of fruit,
yielding a fruit every monthand its leaves of the tree
were for the healings of the nation."
I love that verse.
God has a forever plan for trees.
- And for us.
- [Both] His word is forever alive.

that's not the name, thetree of the knowledge
of good and evil.
- You won't be going out ona limb if you, or no wait,
yes, you will.
