Cancel Culture Strikes Again: Rioters Destroy Philadelphia Statue of Abolitionist Matthias Baldwin

Cancel Culture Strikes Again: Rioters Destroy Philadelphia Statue of Abolitionist Matthias Baldwin Read Transcript

- Some protests over racial injustice

have ended in statues being defaced

and forcibly or otherwisetaken down across the nation.

Our Mark Martin spoke withDan Andros about those actions

and even some attacks on statues

that don't seem to make sense,

like one of aPhiladelphia-area abolitionist.

- Dan, we've all seen theimages of statues coming down

in several states, what's thegood and the bad with this?

- Yeah well there's really notmuch good to speak of here.

This is a movement now

to just sort erase faces from history.

One of the big onesthat's going on right now,

we've seen in Boston and in Philadelphia,

the cities actually removingstatues of Christopher Columbus

is a popular target.

So this is a movement now,if it's not being torn down

they're being defaced,

to sort of take a lookback at people in history

and just try to kind ofcancel them right out of there

and pretend like they didn't exist.

- There was even thestatue of an abolitionist

being defaced with graffiti.

Why this with someone whostood against slavery?

- That's a really good question

and I don't know if there'sa really good answer to it.

But this happened in Philadelphia

and it was a statue of Matthias Baldwin,

who was an early abolitionist, who worked for about 30 years

to end slavery and abolish it

before it actually finally happened.

Now his story is, they werecalling him a colonizer

and a murderer

on the actual statue.

And when you look at this man's life,

he was an entrepreneur,he was very successful

and he actually used his own funding

to educate black children.

He was very passionate aboutthis issue and it seems like,

in a time where slaverywas ingrained in society

that this was one of theguys who was a visionary

and a leader in this movement.

So it really doesn't makea whole lot of sense at all

that this statue would be targeted.

It really just kinda indicates

that maybe these peoplehave actually no idea

who was on this statue at all.

- Is Antifa involved with this?

I mean with this just beinganother act to stir up trouble.

Is Antifa involved in all of this?

- Well that's what thelocal news are reporting

that this was Antifa, whichwould make a lot of sense

because honestly what Antifa does,

there's really not much sensein any of what Antifa does.

So that would fit the MO right here,

when you're defacing abolitionists,

when you're trying tomake a point about racism,

which makes absolutely zero sense.

So that's what thelocal press is reporting

and that would actuallymake sense in this case.

- Our founding fathers Dan,

they lived during thetime of American history

where there was slavery andthen there was the Civil War.

What is important forall Americans to know

about our history here

and to remember when it comesto these men in these times,

and even these monuments?

- Yeah well I think one ofthe things to remember is,

if you don't know historyyou're doomed to repeat it.

And so, it was a very complicated time.

I think it's very easy tolook back at all of the people

who were involved in slavery some way

and say like, well gee that was wrong,

like let's delete them all.

And so the problem with that is

since it was so ingrained in our society,

if you wanna delete everyone

that had anything todo with slavery at all,

in relation to thefounding of this country,

well then you may as well

just delete all of the history books

and pick a new date tostart history teaching.

Some arbitrary datearound 1900 or something,

or whenever you think things got better,

maybe after the civil rights movement.

But it doesn't make a whole lot of sense

to just sit there andtry to delete and erase

all the things from history.

We don't have to like everysingle thing that happened.

Certainly slavery was a stain on America

and our early founding, but as you mentioned

the Civil War happened, wemoved in the right direction.

Eventually it ended and thatstruggle still goes today

where we're fighting to try to end racism,

but the truth of the matteris it's a complicated issue

and to sit there and try toerase it all is not very helpful

and I think in the longrun will actually have

the unintended consequenceof causing people

to forget history andeventually, as the saying goes,

we'll be doomed to repeat it.

- Dan these difficulttimes are disturbing.

What is at stake here forour nation spiritually

as we see all this anger, hate, and the need on all sides

to come together in unity and love?

Talk about the need for all sides

to come together in unity and love.

- Yeah well I think theproblem here is that

we are losing the abilityto talk to one another

and to think rationally about issues

and to really disagree with people

and still love them at the end of the day.

I mean we're really having

this direction that we're heading in

where we sort of put people in a category,

we put them in a box,

and if they don't agree withthe thing that we agree with,

then we wanna just move them

and remove them from anydebate or conversation.

And that's just not how Godwould want us to treat people.

And really, actually if you look at it,

it's kind of bullying isessentially what it is.

It's if you don't agree withme, well we are gonna just

erase you from society.

We're gonna get ya canned from your job.

We're gonna cancel your show.

All of these other things.

So that's just not the way

that God would want us tointeract with one another.

We wanna respect people evenwhen we disagree with them.

And you just can't dothat in a cancel culture

that wants to delete everything.

- Dan would you pray for our nation now?

- Yeah absolutely.- Okay.

- Heavenly Father, we justthank you for this time,

for these words thatwe get to discuss here

and look at your truths,

because you would wantus to love one another,

and it's very difficult todo in this time Lord Jesus.

So we would just askthat you would help us

love one another well.

That we would hear other people,

that we would listen to them,

but not seek to fear or bully people

out of the conversation,

that's not what you would have us do.

So help us Lord tointeract with one another

as we go forward and let's be a light

and let's draw people towards you

with the gospel messageand ultimately, hopefully

draw more people tosalvation through your name.

And Jesus it's in your namethat we pray all these things.

Amen.- Amen
