- First, CBN's healthreporter, Lorie Johnson,
joins us now for the latest.
Lorie, you know, we'vebeen hearing so much
about the malaria drugas a possible treatment,
but now doctors are excited about a drug
that's actually beenused for lice and worms
that also may be good.
What?(laughing)
- That's right.- Talk to me.
- I know, gross, right?
- Yeah, seriously.- Lice and worms!
It's an antiparasite medicineand it's called ivermectin.
And like hydroxychloroquine,the malaria drug,
ivermectin is very cheap,it's very plentiful,
it's considered anessential medicine worldwide
because of its antiparasitic benefits,
but also it's a great antiviral,it's shown to be proven
effective against West Nile and dengue.
And so it's been really widely popularized
and a lot of folks mightrecognize the name ivermectin
because it's also a very popular
heartworm medicine for dogs,
and I should probably tell our viewers,
don't take your dog's heartworm medicine.
Even if it's ivermectinit still needs more study
and we don't know the proper doses.
But immune specialist Dr. David Perlmutter
said this could be the next best thing.
Take a look.
- It's used in thirdworld nations for example,
to help people get over worm infestations,
and even used here in theUnited States for head lice.
It's used on horses and cattle,so it's widely available.
And some very forward looking researchers
in Melbourne, Australia havefound that this ivermectin,
a very widely available drug,
reduced the amount of COVIDvirus in a cell culture,
I wanna be very clear about that,
we'll get back to that in just a moment,
by 5,000 fold in just 48 hours.
- Well that's incredible--- That is pretty impressive.
And so now ivermectin isbeing tested on humans,
human trials are underway.
And speaking of exciting medications,
we've been talking aboutsome other medications
that have been really, very exciting
and there's a lot of progress being made
on human trials there, so looking forward,
even though we're notgoing to have a vaccine
for another year or a year and a half,
there could be some very popular
and very effectivetreatments long before then.
- Lorie, you know this as well,
that the epicenter for all ofthis here in the United States
has been New York City.- New York.
- The health experts thereare saying that the number
of cases in New York Citycan be summed up in one word.
What is that word?
- The one word thatcausing all these problems,
that caused all these problems, likely,
according to most health experts, subway.
I don't know if you've been
on New York's subways before.- I have, absolutely, yeah.
- Yeah, I go a couple times every year,
I try to take cabs and whatnot,
but subways are so convenient.
And for folks who don't goon the subways very often
it's just people are crammed in,
they're literally face-to-face,in small, enclosed spaces,
tens of thousands of people, holding on the metal bars,
we know that metalretains the virus a lot,
and then also peopleare there on the subways
for long periods of time because,
I don't know if you've everexperienced this George,
but sometimes the subways will stop
and shut down for a little while
and everyone's justsitting there on the train
for 10 or 15 minutes waitingfor it to start up again.
And so moving forward,
the subways are goingto be very different.
There's going to haveto be social distancing
and people wearing masksand a lot of sanitation.
Another big red flag, popular in New York
but everywhere else too, elevators.
'Cause there again, you'vegot the small space,
people are enclosed andthey're touching the buttons.
So moving forward these are the things
that we're gonna need to be thinking of
as we start to graduallyreopen the country.
- There are new immunity tests
that are being shipped out this week.
Real quickly, tell us,how are these different
from the other teststhat they've sent out?
- Great question, a lotof people are confused
by all these different tests.
There are two main types of tests.
One is to test whether thevirus itself is present,
it's the test that tells you
whether or not you have the coronavirus.
The other is the antibody test,
the immunity test that tellsyou if you ever had it.
And this is so importantbecause a lot of people,
they say an estimated 25 to 50% of people
who have had thecoronavirus, had no symptoms.
And so there are four tests
that have been approved by the FDA
and they're being sent out.
20 million per month aregoing to be mass produced,
but folks need to bewareof antibody tests,
immunity tests that sold on the internet.
Make sure it's been approved by the FDA
because there are a lotof scammers out there
trying to sell antibody teststhat aren't very effective.
- Yeah, fantastic.
Lorie, as always you have been on this
from the very beginning andI know that we at CBN News
as well as our viewers really enjoy
your report.- My pleasure George, thank--
