- [Narrator] Alaney wasonly 20 when she escaped
with her kids from a violent husband.
- It was a nightmare.
One day he hit me sohard he nearly killed me.
He used to hit my daughter for no reason.
- [Narrator] Alaney movedhundreds of miles away,
but it cost her everything.
She moved into this shantywhich had no doors or locks
and she always struggled to pay the rent.
- The owner left a mattress for us.
I was worried though.
I thought she might come and take it back
and we would sleep on the floor.
- [Narrator] To make money,
Alaney made coconutcandies in borrowed pans
on an open pit fire.
- I borrowed things, but sometimes people
were afraid to lend thembecause they didn't know me.
One women gave me an old baby stroller
to bring my baby alongwhen I sold the candy.
- [Narrator] Alaney earneda little over a dollar a day
and often blamed herself whenher children went hungry.
- I knew it was all my fault.
It wasn't fair for them to suffer
because of the choice I'd made
to marry their father.
- [Narrator] WhenOperation Blessing learned
about her situation, webuilt her a new secure house
with a door and windows.
Then we furnished itwith tables and chairs
and beds for everyone.
- [Alaney] This is the most amazing gift
that I have ever received!
- [Narrator] Then webought Alaney a new stove
and other items needed.
Along with a new strollercart for her to sell
even more candy.
Now that she no longer has to pay rent,
Alaney has enough to support her family.
- I am so excited to have my own place!
