Superbook Art Director Tom Bancroft shares a 6-step process on how to draw characters from the Superbook animation series. Read Transcript

- Hi, this is Tom Bancroft,

and I hope you enjoyedthat drawing I just did.

You know, I know it's hard sometimes

to kinda keep up with me.

So I've created a six-step process

that I think will make it alot easier to follow along.

And this time, you can gothrough one step at a time

and really know what you need to do

and what to cover next.

And I think you'll be ableto draw the characters

of Superbook and the Bible, just like me.

In this example, we'll usethe character sketch of Jesus.

For the first step, you'llwant to create the character

out of basic shapes.

Like a circle for the head.

Circles or rectangles for the chest.

And lines for the arms and legs.

This'll give you thebasic size relationships,

which is most important toget right at the beginning.

Step two, start addingsome dimensional shapes

into that basic form.

Tube shapes for the arms and legs.

A triangle jaw shape.

And wedge shapes for the feet and hands.

In the third step, you can start to add

some details into the basic form.

(fun music)

Start by adding the clothing shapes

that drape over the body shapes.

Then the eye, face, and hair shapes.

(fun music)

Step four is when youfinish the sketch phase

by finishing off the details.

This is a good time to make corrections

and get things just the way you want them.

The fifth step shows you whatyour sketch would look like

with a nice clean linearound your drawing.

You can do this by eithererasing around the lines,

or laying a clean pieceof paper over your sketch

and tracing the final lines

to get a nice, clean look.

In animation, that'scalled a clean-up drawing.

For the final step, you can add some tones

to your tight drawing byusing the side of your pencil

or a marker to shade in areas.

Make some areas lighter and some darker.

Then ta-da!

Congratulations, you've done it.

(fun music)

That was awesome.

Hey, if you just take your time

and keep following those six steps,

you're gonna end up with drawings

that I know you're gonna love

and wanna share withyour family and friends.

So, thanks for watching, andkeep drawing from the heart.
