- Hi, I'm Tom Bancroft.
You may know some of my past work.
I'm an animator that has worked on films
like The Lion King, andAladdin, Pocahontas,
Mulan, Beauty and the Beast,
and now I'm an art director on Superbook,
and I'm excited today to talk about
how to draw Pharaoh.
And Pharaoh was the leader of Egypt.
In the Bible there are two mainpharaohs that we read about.
One made Joseph his right-hand man,
and later another pharaohwas convinced by Moses
to let the Israelites go free.
That's the pharaoh we're drawing today,
so let's get going.
To start with I like to use a red pencil,
and why I do that is that way I can start
sketching out the shapes,
and also figure out the proportions.
So start with a circlevery high on your paper,
because this is going to be his head,
and then I divide that circle up,
so I go right down the middle,
a little off center,
and I'm using the side of the pencil
just to kind of keep it sketchy.
Then I'm gonna add this triangle
rectangle shape here,
that's going to be his chin and jaw area.
And then let's go down andadd a tube shape for his neck.
He's going to be a big, strong character.
We're gonna draw another circle here
that's gonna be his chestarea, a bigger circle,
kind of an oval,
and then a little bit of a waist,
and let's add the legs here,
and they're just tubes again,
and then at the end here I'm gonna add
a little triangle shape, that'll be his foot.
And then this leg's more ofa side angle of this leg,
so this foot is gonna be a rectangle.
And now I'll do littleovals for his shoulders,
and let's put his arm on his hip here,
and do a little circle forwhere that hand is gonna be.
These tubes are gonna be that arm,
this tube is gonna be the bicep,
and then there's the forearm.
So there's kind of our basis of Pharaoh
in just very simple shapes.
And now I'm gonna start detailing out
where his tunic, skirtkind of the thing is.
That's gonna cut downhere in the middle in two,
because it's in kind of two pieces.
And he's gonna have a sashthat drops down the middle,
and then a couple otherlittle sash decorative things.
He's got a lot of bling.
That's what I'm doing here is drawing
wrist bracelets and thingslike that that he's got on.
And across here he's got a strap.
He's got sort of aheaddress kind of thing here
that goes around his neck.
Okay, now let's go backup to the face here,
and on both sides ofthis line I like to start
just with ovals, addingin where the eyes will be.
I'm gonna add a kind oftriangle shape for his nose,
and his mouth let's do with a line,
but it'll go right about here.
He's gonna have eyebrows, thick eyebrows
that'll go just above his eyes,
they're kind of triangular.
And then we're gonna do his headdress,
and it kind of has a V shape to the middle
of his forehead,
and then it kind ofcomes down on both sides
to his shoulders, kind ofcurves around his chest here.
Oh, and he's gonna have sandals too,
so he's very ornate comparedto most of the other
Bible characters.
You have these sort of triangular shapes,
a little jewel here, sothey'll be like an oval
in the front.
Okay, so now it's startingto already look like
Pharaoh a little bit, I hope.
Now I'm gonna grab my graphite pencil,
and with that I can startreally adding the details.
Let's go in and start adding,
you know, a little bit of an expression.
He's gonna have sort ofa stern look on his face,
and here's those eyebrows,
they're kind of big, dramatic eyebrows.
And underneath that we have his eyes.
He's got just a littlebump on his nose here,
lines underneath his eyes, pupils here.
Make him look at us, so they're kind of
in the corner here.
Very stern expression.
And then bottom lip.
This will be his cheek bone here,
and it comes down intoa very strong long jaw.
And then we're gonna add the ears.
Let's start drawing in thedetails of the headdress.
Sort of a snake kind of emblem here.
Strong neck.
His headdress here is basically just
wrapping around his shoulders.
These will be like gold bands.
Kind of a muscular physique,
so I'm gonna add some biceps here.
Then we're gonna add this,
remember, this is some of his bling.
There's like three rings that go around,
and then it's connected here.
It's got lines in there too that are
kind of equally spaced.
And into the ribcage, findhis chest here a little bit.
Nice and strong looking.
He's got this strapthat cuts across there.
His ribcage here.
And remember, he's got thisbelt here, and the sash.
We'll put his hand on the far side here.
There's a kind of squareshape in the front.
It's got a couple lines.
Let's go back over here, figure out his biceps,
and then add that othermetal strap here on his arm.
And then again back tohis bracelet on this side.
It's got the same three rings.
They get progressively a little smaller
because his wrist is tapering.
Sketch in his hand a little bit.
You're not gonna see a lot of this one.
Now his long skirt, same with the sash
that kind of droops down here.
Just two fairly parallel lines,
and from that we're gonnahave these other ones
that are gonna come off of that.
So there's one behind that,
and an even smaller one behind that.
And we're gonna repeat that on this side.
And then this comes down to there,
and then another half curve here.
These are kind of justextra pieces of material
for decoration, and ithas some frill to it,
so we just kind of showthat with some breaks in it.
All right, now let's getdown to his legs here.
His sandals are fancy,we've got this jewel on it,
and it's got theselittle straps on it here,
so we'll add that as we go.
Gonna add the toes.
Our feet are very stylized,
and they kind of point up in the front.
We kind of see how it kindof sticks up in the front
with a point.
You know, because I sketched this out,
that's why I'm able to go in and add
some of these details just in graphite
because I kind of, I know where everything
is supposed to be, so it'sreally kind of giving me
a nice guide, I'm tryingto improve it a little bit
as I go too.
He's got lines that go through here.
He's got these sort of triangleshapes that go in here,
and they're repeated down here.
Even more important is thatthere's these stripes here,
and we definitely need to put those in.
It gives it a very Egyptian look,
and they're kind of radiating from the top
and going out, but when we get down here
they'll be going straight across.
This is where they startgoing straight across.
We just make them kind of equal,
not too thick,
and then repeat it down the other side.
Oh, you know what, Ididn't draw through this...
This wraps around his feet,so we're gonna have it
in the back too.
We want to indicate the frill here,
a few lines and a couplebreaks in the back.
And what I'm gonna do now is
I'll add a little bit of shading.
You know, I'll just, someof the darker colors,
I'm gonna throw in some shading here,
and notice I'm usingthe side of my pencil.
It's a little easier just toget a nice little gradient.
Depending on how hard I push will show
kind of how dark it goes.
I'll add a little shadow back here,
add some shading there.
And it helps kind of break up the shapes.
Then, of course, hiseyebrows are really dark,
so we're gonna shadethose in darkest of all.
Now let's do like everyother one of these.
So now that is Pharaoh.
So I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did,
and just keep drawing from the heart.
