- [Chris Mitchell] Thisweek on Jerusalem Dateline,
millions of Israelis take shelter
as Islamic Jihad fires hundreds of rockets
into southern Israel.
Will a shaky ceasefire take hold?
Plus, Turkey's President Erdogan
visits President Trump at the White House.
Trump says a ceasefire innortheast Syria is holding,
but those on the groundtell a different story.
And CBN's Orphan's Promiselends a helping hand.
All this and more this weekon "Jerusalem Dateline."
(guitar chord)
Hello and welcome to thisedition of "Jerusalem Dateline."
I'm Chris Mitchell.
Israel targeted a top Islamic Jihad leader
who they said was responsiblefor rocket attacks on Israel
and called him a ticking time bomb.
In response, the Iranianbacked group in Gaza
fired hundreds of rockets into Israel.
CBN Middle East correspondentJulie Stall has that story.
- [Julie Stall] Mission accomplished.
That's what Israeli PrimeMinister Benjamin Netanyahu
said of the three-day militaryoperation against Gaza.
(Prime Minister Netanyahuspeaks foreign language)
- [Translator For Netanyahu]The goals of the operation
have now been fully achieved.
The goal of the operationwas to target the commander
of the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip.
He was eliminated alongwith dozens of terrorists
and dozens of important Islamic Jihad
infrastructure targets.
Our enemies got the message.
We can reach anyone, even in their beds.
- [Julie] The latestround of violence started
with Israel's assassination
of Senior Islamic Jihad official Abu Alata
in a targeted air strike on Gaza.
Israel said he was responsible
for most of the rocket attackson Israel over the last year
and was planning otherimminent terror attacks.
- Israel struck a ticking bomb,
the arch terrorist workingunder Iranian instructions
and with Iranian funding
to plan and carry out terroristattacks against Israel.
Israel doesn't want any escalation
but we will not hesitateto defend our citizens.
- Here in Ashkelon, just sixmiles from the Gaza border,
life is beginning to return to normal.
One home here suffered a direct hit
and a woman was moderatelyinjured from flying glass,
but without the Iron Domeand shelters in most homes,
the casualties and damagewould be much worse.
(Zion speaks foreign language)
- [Translator For Zion]All those interceptions
are miracles.
If we could only imagine
where those missiles would have fallen
on cars, on houses, on shopping centers
and of course every time wehear this Red Color warning,
we miss a heart beat, especially the kids.
(voice on security loudspeaker)
- [Julie] Israelicommunities within 25 miles
of the Gaza Strip wereshut down for four days
as Islamic Jihad launchedsome 450 rockets at Israel
that went as far north as Tel Aviv.
Israel said the Iron DomeMissile Defense System
was 90 percent successfulin intercepting rockets
heading for populated areas.
Half of Israel,
including Israel's secondlargest city, Tel Aviv,
was closed down duringthe first day of attacks.
- I'm working for a good solution.
I hope for everybody, forthe Arab, for the Jews,
for the world.
- [Julie] Palestinians saidmore than 30 were killed
including several children and a family.
Israel said most of thosekilled were militants.
- These terrorists are notonly out to kill Israelis.
In fact, they're killingtheir own people in Gaza.
At the cost of every rocket they shoot,
they could have builtanother Gazan classroom.
- [Julie] After two days,Islamic Jihad announced
that it had agreed to a ceasefire.
(Musab speaks foreign language)
- [Translator For Musab] We confirmed
that a ceasefire deal was reached
under the supervision of Egypt.
- [Julie] After theceasefire was announced,
terrorists continued tolaunch sporadic rocket fire
against Israel for nearly a day
and the IDF carried out onelast air strike in Gaza.
(President Rivlin speaks foreign language)
- [Translator For Rivlin]We made it very clear
that we're not looking for escalation,
and that quiet will beanswered with quiet.
- [Julie] For now, it seems, that the violence will subside.
But how long the ceasefirewill last remains to be seen.
Julie Stall, CBN News, Ashkelon, Israel.
(electronic hum)
- In Washington, TurkishPresident Recep Erdogan
visited President Trumpat the White House.
For many in Washingtonand the Middle East,
more a month after a Turkishinvasion of northeast Syria,
there's growing concern
about the ongoing U.S.relationship with Turkey.
While some hope PresidentTrump would deliver hard truths
to Turkish President Erdogan,
instead he got high praise.
- I'm a big fan of the president.
I have to tell you that.
- [Chris] At the White House,President Trump also praised
the ceasefire inside northeast Syria.
- Today the ceasefire continues to hold
and I know that theceasefire, while complicated,
is moving forward and moving forward
at a very rapid clip.
(gunfire)
- Yet on the ground, aideworkers told a different story.
- Well, it's been constantfighting since the invasion.
There's never been aceasefire, not one day.
Air strikes by drones, regular air strikes,
artillery, mortars, Turkish tanks.
- [Chris] A number ofinternational human rights groups
have also cited Turkey for war crimes
during its invasion.(soldiers shout)
At the press conference,
one reporter asked President Erdogan
about the plight of Christians
who have suffered during the invasion.
- [Translator For Erdogan]The ones remaining
on the side of the Syrian territory
will see their worshipingpractices restored
and revived in a a special manner.
They're receiving health care.
They're receiving humanitarian aid
in every aspect possible.
- My name is Omar Firaz.
- [Chris] Yet this Christian leader
in the Syrian city of Kobane
tells a different tale.
- [Translator For Omar] Under the pretext
of fighting against the Kurds,
a lot of churches havebeen targeted and destroyed
and many Christianswere forcibly displaced
from their home towns.
- Something is happening in Turkey
that I hope PresidentTrump and President Erdogan
had a very frank discussion on.
- [Chris] Given the abusesduring its ongoing invasion,
human and religious rightsabuses inside Turkey
and a NATO member buyingRussian military equipment,
Senator James Langfordquestioned the future
of the Turkish U.S. relationship.
- We've had an economic relationship,
a military relationship, agenuine friendship with Turkey.
But we do not know who Turkey is any more.
We don't recognize the Turkey of today
from Turkey five years ago.
(electronic zip)
- After weeks of fighting,
here's a look at some of the results
of the Turkish invasion
that some say is acatastrophe for the region
that has profoundly affectedthe lives of millions.
The day Turkey began bombingand invading northeast Syria,
it made a promise to the United States.
The White House stated,
"Turkey has committedto protecting civilians,
"protecting religiousminorities, including Christians,
"and ensuring no humanitariancrisis takes place
"and we will hold themto that commitment."
Eyewitnesses including humanitarian groups
testify Turkey has broken each vow.
According to Amnesty International,
Turkish forces displayeda shameful disregard
for civilian life.
carrying out seriousviolations and war crimes.
World Magazine's MindyBelz is in the region
and tells CBN News of firsthand accounts of atrocities.
- [Mindy] Numerousrefugees described for me
having men having theirhands tied behind their backs
seeing them beheaded.
I had several reports of beheadings
and people cut in the streets and burned.
These are war crimes.
This is just incomprehensiblein a seemingly senseless way
of creating what Turkeqycalls a safe zone.
- [Chris] Belz says Christianswere a specific target.
- [Belz] One of the Syrianrefugees that I spoke to
and this was a Muslim, wentout of his way to explain to me
that what he saw was particulartargeting of Christians.
- [Chris] Turkish ally, the Syrian National Army,
has marked the Arabic letter"N" on Christian homes
for confiscation, just asISIS did only a few years ago.
- [Belz] This is the firsttime that it is happening
under sanction of a NATO ally.
It seems like a completebetrayal of our alliances
here in this region.
And it seems like a betrayal even
of our Christian brothers and sisters.
- [Chris] The humanitariancrisis is overwhelming,
with northeast Syrian hospitalsrunning out of supplies.
The International Red Cross reports
nearly half a million people
may soon be without clean water
after Turkish bombers tookout a key pumping station.
Hundreds of thousands of refugees
have fled this chaos and violence,
with thousands floodinginto neighboring Kurdistan.
There, CBN's Operation Blessing
and its partner, BarzaniCharity Foundation,
are helping the refugees, including 160 Christian families.
- We're providing hot meals, boxes of food for the families.
And the most needed reliefthat they need right now.
Food, shelter is so needed.
These families, theylost everything again.
(rifle viewfinder rattles)
- [Chris] CBN News has learnedthat this key city, Tal Tamr,
faces defeat with Turkishbacked forces closing in.
Analysts backed up byinternal sources tell us
it could jeopardize the SyrianDemocratic Forces, the SDF.
That could lead to the escapeof countless ISIS prisoners
and a resurgence of the Islamic State.
CBN News has also learnedTurkish forces are amassing
near the city of Kobane.
Dalton Thomas of FrontierAlliance International
met with this Christian leader in Kobane
and heard his plea.
- [Translator For Omar]Our lives are at risk.
The reason is because we believe in Jesus.
Christians around the world
and especially American Christians,
should push their government
to make a decision to protect us
because our lives are truly in danger.
(exciting music)
- [Chris] Coming up, the European Union

when we come back.
- [Announcer] Roman soldiers destroy
the Second Temple of Jerusalem.
Centuries of eyewitnesses say
the temple treasures survived.
But where are they?
(exciting music)
- [Woman] They wentfrom Jerusalem to Rome,
Rome to Carthage, Carthage to Byzantium.
- Historians are silent aboutwhat happened to it next.

- On the same day Islamic Jihad
started launching rockets at Israel,
the European Union's highest court
launched what many are calling an attack
against the Jewish state.
They say it's only a stepping stone
to the boycott, divestments, and sanctions movement
and will lead to anti-Semitism.
Here's that story.
- [Reporter] Israelquickly condemned a ruling
from the European Union's top court
that products from the so-called West Bank
cannot carry the "Made in Israel" label.
- The indication of origin
of the products originatingin Israeli settlements
must be correct and notmisleading to the consumer.
- [Reporter] Reactionwas swift and widespread.
Danny Danon, Israel'sU.N. ambassador is saying
"This is another example of Europe
"continuing its surrenderto Israel's enemies.
"The EU's discriminationagainst the Zionist Enterprise
"will provide legalcover for anti-Semitism."
- Israel stronglyrejects the recent ruling
of the European court of justice,
which has one aim and one aim only
and that is to single out Israel
and to apply double standards against it.
- [Reporter] Expressing deep concern,
the U.S. State Department said
the ruling suggested anti-Israel bias.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
credited Secretary of State Mike Pompeo
for providing clarity,
something Europe clearly failed to do.
- Because Europe the other daydecided to act against Israel
and against
and to put labels onproducts that are made here.
They don't join exactlythe sanctions against Iran.
They join sanctions againstIsrael, unbelievable.
- [Reporter] PLO's Hanan Ashrawi
welcomed the labelingdecision as a first step.
- We believe the idealthing that should happen,
the only just thing,
is not to import thesesettlement products and produce
in the first place.
- [Reporter] Professor GeraldSteinburg of the NGO Monitor
condemned the decision, calling it a gateway drug
towards boycott, divestment and sanctions.
Israel Ganz, head of the group
governing the Israeli settlements,
doesn't believe the rulingwill hurt businesses.
(Israel speaks foreign language)
- [Translator For Israel] The product here
is of high standards.
Everyone wants to produce, Jews and Arabs.
There is demand in themarkets and therefore,
besides this miserable decision,
I hope and estimatethere will be no impact.
- [Reporter] Boycotts of Israelicompanies in the West Bank
often backfire, hurting Palestinians
more than the intended targets.
Case en point, SodaStream.
CBN News has documentedthe company's success
and its employment ofsome 500 Palestinians,
paying them four times the salary
likely provided by Palestinian employers.
Attacked for years by the BDS movement,
SodaStream eventually movedoperations inside Israel,
costing most of thePalestinians their jobs.
For now, Israel can only wait and see
if the new ruling has any impact.

- One of the deepestvalues of the Jewish faith
is to bury one's dead.
That's even more poignant for this mother
who lost her son in the 2014 Gaza War
Israel fought against Hamas.
And still, she cannotsay her final goodbye.
(electronic slide and crash)
- Hadar means glory in Hebrew
and Hadar Goldin was indeedhis parents' pride and joy.
Losing him was difficult enough,
but not being able togive him a proper burial
is almost too much to bear.
It's why the family camehere to the United States
with the help of the Israeli Embassy
to try to make some headway.
- It's heartbreaking.
- [Eric] The pain in thisIsraeli mother's eyes is evident
as she talks about her son Hadar Goldin.
She says he was always smiling.
- Smiling from the inside.
His most characteristic thing was
to see the good things in everything.
In Hebrew, we say you have bad eye
(speaks foreign word)
and you have good eye.
He had the good eye.
- [Eric] Hadar joined the Israeli army
and in August of 2014, he was in Gaza
as part of Operation Protective Edge.
Hamas had launched missiles into Israel.
His mother says twohours into a ceasefire,
he was ambushed by Hamas.
- Hamas took advantage ofknowing Israel soldiers protocol
not to shoot nobody during ceasefire.
They ambushed his team, killed three of them,
and kidnapped Hadar intothe underground tunnel
where they still keephim, his body, his remains
as a bargaining chip torelease sentenced terrorists.
- [Eric] The family hasbeen trying unsuccessfully
ever since to retrieve their son's remains
and give him a proper burial,
a cornerstone of the Jewish faith.
The response from officialshad always been the same.
- [Mrs. Goldin] These areterrorists, Hamas terrorists.
What can you do?
We don't have any contactsto those terrorists.
War is war with all the consequences,
but capturing the dead,
refusing to let me bury him
is the lowest thing to do.
- [Eric] The family has new hope,
thanks to a newly passed U.N.Security Counsel resolution.
It says in part, that whena ceasefire is initiated,
and a peace agreement reached,
the return of hostages and the deceased
must be a top priority.
- So for us, this is nowthe windows of opportunity
to bring our son home, since the United States,
highly involved in initiatingthe peace plan in our region.
This resolution actuallymoves the responsibility
to the UN State members by saying
when you initiate agreements,it's your responsibility now
to factor in the return of Hadar.
- [Eric] The Goldins came to the U.S.
to try and build support for their case,
by meeting with White House officials
and the UN Secretary-General,who she said was optimistic.
His office released astatement saying, in part,
"The Secretary-Generalhad a private meeting
"with the parents of Hadar Goldin.
"He continues to call on all parties
"to abide by internationalhumanitarian law
"and duly inform the families
"of missing Israelis and Palestinians
"regarding the statusof their loved ones."
This mother feels a step closer to closure
for her son, who was 23 years old,
and a month away from hiswedding when he was killed.
- For us, it's to put to closure.
It's to put a closure to the family
and specifically to his twinbrother and his fiancee.
And we believe that yourcurrent administration
can fix this wrong, not just pray for it,
not just think aboutus, but make it happen.
- Mrs. Goldin says when she spoke
with the UN Secretary-General,
he said Hadar's remainsshould be returned quote
"Immediately and unconditionally."
She's hoping that happensin the very near future.
In Washington, Eric Philips, CBN News.

- A young Syrian girl and her family
fled the civil war inSyria to southern Lebanon.
That's where two ministries
provided schooling, food and hope.
- [Correspondent] Nermeenwants to be a doctor somebody,
but her grade schooleducation was cut short
because of the war in Syria.
(gun shots)
- [Translator For Nermeen] I remember
the good things back home
like my school and friendsand all the fun we had.
Then the fighting startedand more and more bombs
were falling every day.(shouting and gunfire)
We left Syria after onebomb destroyed our house.
(bomb blast)
- [Translator For Mother]We came to Lebanon
to find a safe place for my children,
but life here is hard for refugees.
We're not allowed to have jobs
and I was sad to see Nermeenlosing her education.
She was a such a good student before.
- [Correspondent] WhenCBN's Orphan's Promise

they could attend our schoolcalled The Hope Center.
Here we provide Syrian refugee children

They teach us about Jesusand how much He loves us too.
I want to become a doctor
so I can be like Jesus and heal people.
- [Correspondent] Wealso show the children

Jesus came to save theworld and offer His love
and show the way to Heaven.
He did that for me.

Nermeen's mother now has hopefor her children's future.
- [Translator For Mother] Ifeel so at ease and secure
since my children are being fed
and they are getting their education,
all the things that any motherwould wish for her kids.
And you have made that happen.
- [Translator ForNermeen] You're helping me
with my dream to be a doctor.
I love you all and thank you so much.
- Finally, here's a plea
from a Christian leader inside Syria
to the church in the West.
(Omar speaks foreign language)
- [Translator For Omar] We know
that you are praying forus but this is not enough.
Immediate decisions have to betaken to protect our region.
Since four years, we have beenliving in peace and freedom.
We built our churches.
We live safely with allthe other communities,
but now we are living under serious threat
as we have seen innocent people,
including women andchildren, being killed,
as well as the destructions of our homes
and the huge wave of displacements,
so I hope the right decision is taken
to stop this genocide.
- Please do pray and speak up
for these Christians undersiege in northeast Syria.
And pray for the leaders inthe U.S. and the Middle East
to make was and Godly choices.
Well, that's all for thisedition of "Jerusalem Dateline."
