- [News Anchor] A Christiandoctor in the United Kingdom
lost his job and now alawsuit to keep his job.
It all happened becausehe held a biblical view
of males and females.
Dr. David Mackereth workedfor the British government
as a disability benefits assessor
and a judge just ruled thatDr. Mackereth's refusal
to call a bearded man madam was qoute
incompatible with human dignity.
Well here to set us straight on his firing
and the court rulingis Dr. David Mackereth.
Dr. Mackereth please explainto us why you refused
to refer to a bearded man, Iguess a transsexual, as madam.
- I'm a Christian and a doctor.
First of all as a ChristianI believe God has made us
male and female.
And it's an extremelyimportant part of his creation.
And that we can't change sex.
I believe you can't change sex
because God has made us male and female,
but also it's entirely unscientific
to say that we can change sex.
- Well how did the person andyour fellow workers respond
when you said "No I willnot call you madam."?
- It's more difficult for me
to talk about the people at the DWP,
but if I talk about my work in the NHS,
there are a lot of people I work with,
not necessarily Christians,
who are very supportive of what I've said.
- Well what are they telling you?
- There's a feeling here I believe
that not just myselfbut all of us are having
our consciences forced.
And people are afraid to speak up.
There's something of a climate of fear.
And I'm going to be perfectly honest,
I think that some ofthe people I've spoken
to at work have beenthrilled that somebody
has spoken up and takenthe stand that I have.
And there is a sense in which I'm saying
what everybody would like to say,
but many people are too afraid to say.
- You filed a lawsuit,Christian Legal Center
represented you.
What was your defense?
- My defense is that as aChristian in good conscience
I simply can't do that.
That to do that would be to lieand lying is a terrible sin.
- People here in the U.S. don't realize
that in Great Britain the country does not
guarantee free speech norfreedom of expression.
We have it in out FirstAmendment to our Constitution
but you don't have itthere. Is that correct?
- I would argue that assomebody who's lived here
for my whole life that I felt that I had
freedom of speech with some fears for it
until the court judgment.
And now I think I don'thave freedom of speech.
- If you don't have it in the Constitution
then it isn't guaranteed.
I guess the government then can decide
that it can change over time.
Speech can change.
Certain speech can be allowed,
not allowed over time, correct?
How do you feel about that? (laughs)
- I believe that although we don't
have a written Constitution
there is quite a fewpeople who is pointing out
that the Bible undergirdsour Constitution,
and the truth of the Scriptures.
So for a judge to throwout the Bible effectively
and say that it's not relevant
and it's against human dignity
is an astonishing ruling.
- Some people think it'sthe judge playing God
or overruling God on his creation.
How do you feel about that as a doctor?
- I was shocked by the judgment
and the things that it says.
It certainly seems to besaying that there's no place
for Christianity in modern Britain
and as a Christian Ibelieve with all my heart
that Christianity and the Gospel
are the best message for modern Britain
and I don't think that as Christians
we are the enemy of the people
I believe that we are the ones who are
to be salt and light.
So I'm astonished at the judge's ruling.
- Is it all about feelingsand being a good Christian,
loving people and allowing them
to be called whatever they want?
- Well of course asChristians we are commanded
to love all people and with Christian love
and that we are determined to do.
There was no desire here to upset
or offend anybody, butwe can never love people
by supporting and promoting a lie.
- So you really believethis is a lie then?
- I don't believe a person can change sex,
and I would challenge my profession
and any doctor anywhere in the world,
any philosopher, any researcher to prove
that a person can change sex.
It is impossible.
- [News Anchor] What are the chances
of you winning an appeal?
- I think we would agree that the stakes
are getting very high here.
We have to appeal, we have to go forward
and I as a Christian am determined
to go forward no matter what.
I have to, I cannot dowhat they are telling me
I have to do, and my legal team are
in agreement with this,
these wonderful people thathave been working with me.
- Some people would say that it seems
like the British Governmentis becoming Orwellian
in trying to tell you whatto say, what to think.
Do you think it's getting to that point
there in the U.K.
- That's a good question as well.
Some of us because of Brexitand because judges are now
overruling the politicians and everything.
Some of us aren't even surewhat the British Government
is anymore.
- Finally why do youthink God has allowed this
to happen to you Dr. Mackereth?
What is your message for others?
- Well the first thingis that there was a lot
of soul searching before I did this.
It didn't just happen without some warning
and prayerfulness and my desire
was to be faithful tothe Lord Jesus Christ,
and at that moment I knewthat if I simply gave in
that my fellowship with heLord Jesus would be breached,
and that I would do something that was
dishonoring to him, andhe gave me the strength
to take that stand.
Now I'm determined to continue standing.
It mat become very costly indeed,
but I'm determined to continue standing,
but I remain entirelydependent on the grace of God,
but we must fight this battle.
We can't walk away fromit, we're all involved now.
- Okay, standing for yourfaith in the United Kingdom,
Dr. David Mackereth thank youfor setting us straight today.
God bless you.
- Thank you very much.
