Trump Calls House Resolution Condemning His So-Called 'Racist' Tweets a 'Con Game'

- The resolution passedmostly along party lines
with four Republicans and one Independent
joining the Democrats.
The four page Democraticresolution said the House quote
"Strongly condemns PresidentDonald Trump's racist comments
that have legitimized anincreased fear and hatred
of new Americans and people of color.
But Speaker Nancy Pelosi created an uproar
when she labeled thepresident's Tweets racist
in her speech on the House floor.
- Every single member of this institution,
Democratic and Republican,join us in condemning
the president's racist Tweets.
To do anything less wouldbe a shocking rejection
of our values, and a shameful abdication--
- Sustained- Of our oath of office
to protect the American people.
- [Charlene] Republicansobjected and her statement
was ruled "A violation of House rules."
The president worked hardto prevent deflections
by Republicans and most stood with him.
Minority leader Kevin McCarthy
said the Tweets "weren't racist."
And argued the Democratsare "playing politics."
- I believe this is about ideology.
This is about socialism versus freedom.
- [Charlene] Ahead of thevote, the president Tweeted,
"I don't have a racist bone in my body.
"The so-called vote to betaken is a Democrat con game."
Tweeting afterwards, "Sogreat to see how unified
"the Republican Party was on today's vote
"concerning statements I made
"about four Democrat congresswomen."
Senator Mitch McConnell also spoke out
defending the president.
- The president's not a racist.
I think the tone of all of thisis not good for the country.
- It all centers aroundTweets the president aimed
at four progressive members of congress
who have targeted him over his immigration
and other policies.
The Tweets called for thefreshman congresswomen to
"Go back and help fix the totally broken
"and crime infested placesfrom which they came."
The targets, four minorityprogressive congresswomen,
all outspoken critics of the president.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
has called detentioncenters at the US border
"concentration camps."
Representatives IlhanOmar and Rashida Tlaib
have called for thepresident to be impeached.
Omar's critical Tweets of Israel
and lawmakers who support the Jewish state
triggered a Houseresolution condemning racism
earlier this year.
After the vote, TexasRepresentative Al Green
introduced articles ofimpeachment against the president.
Possibly forcing a vote this week
on whether to begin proceedings
to remove the president from office.
