- Gospel recording artistand worship leader,
Anthony Evans is the son ofmegachurch pastor, Tony Evans.
He's also an alum of NBC's, "The Voice."
Over the past year and a half,
he has endured several family tragedies,
including his mom's cancer
and the sudden death of hiscousin, Winter Evans-Pitts.
Anthony's journey from grief to hope
is reflected in hislatest album, "Altered,"
which debuted at number oneon the Billboard Gospel Chart.
- Well, Anthony Evans is here with us.
Welcome to the show.
We're so happy to have you.- Thank you so very much for
having me, I'm glad to be here.
- Yes!- Good to see you again!
- Thank you so much. Good to see you too.
Well, first things first, your family has been through
a lot within the past year and a half.
And you have experienced some loss
and grief and so kind of
give us an update on all that stuff.
- You know, um we're feeling good,
but yes it has been one of those years,
which I am sure a lot of the viewers,
or even you, have probably beenthrough moments in your life
where you are like "Are youkidding me, is this for real?"
So I am very careful
when I talk about whatwe been going through
to realize the onlydifference me and a viewer
can be that they don'tget to sit here with you
and talk about it but they can be
going through the exact same thing.
So I never want to sound like poor me
but, there has been alot, there has been a lot.
The loss of a few family membersin a short period of time,
and then dealing with my mom's
health like the B roll mentioned.
But, we're doing okay
and we're getting to see another version,
like an example of that is my mom,
our whole life has beenlike the plate spinner,
she's you know, all four of the kids,
making sure we are good,
making sure my dad's ministry is good.
She was obviously by hisside building it all.
So her life has revolved around us
and now it is so beautiful because
our lives are revolving around her
and to watch her sit there and rest
and put all the plates down
and just, we have, it'sjust a great moment
that we would never have experienced.
I don't want this health crisis,
but the health crisis hasbrought about a change,
a beautiful change where my mom
just gets to be loved onwithout plates spinning.
You know, it's a beautiful place to be.
- That's powerful.
So what has God taughtyou through all of this?
- Oh listen.
- Or what has He been teaching you?
(laughing)
- Yeah, let's land on just one thing.
- Yeah, just one.
- He has taught me thatthere are times in our lives
that He allows things like this
so that we get to see Himagain for the first time.
We get to see a newaspect of His character
for the first time.
Now there are moments where I am like
I don't want to see, I don't want to see
if it takes this to see these aspects
of Your character Idon't want to see them.
But then as He continuesto reveal Himself,
I'm like, you know what, this moment,
although hurtful and we're praying for
healing especially asit relates to my mom,
that He's using thisto allow me to see Him
in a new and fresh way.
- Definitely.
And you lead praise and worship.
You are a worship leader.
So how were you ableto lead people in joy,
as you're feeling grief andturmoil within yourself?
How were you able to do that?
- You know what?
It's based on one thing.
It's based on me understandingthat there is hope.
But when you lose hope,
that's the beginning oflosing everything to me.
That's the beginning of potentially losing
your belief, your faith.
But I've been able toremain hopeful through this.
A lot of it's obviously attributed to
time spent with the Lord,
but also the family that I have.
It's just an amazing family that has,
I'm the one they haveto pull up. (laughing)
Everybody else can just stand there.
I'm the one who's like,
I need some help today.
But that's how I'vebeen able to continue to
minister from a place of authenticity.
And it's also about thesongs that are on that album.
The songs that I'm singing now,
whether it's Raise a Hallelujah, which a lot of viewer know,
it's talking about in themiddle of your misery.
Or the single Fighting for Us,
it's reminding me, as well as the listener
that He is fighting for us in our battles.
There's another song called Hope is Alive.
It's another one, like,
I can sing them authentically
because they're about
being in a troubled situation
and understanding that there's still hope.
- I wish we had more time with you,
but before you go and sing this song,
you're about to sing Raise a Hallelujah,
what does that song mean to you?
- It means the world to me for
a few different reasons, but one my mom,
I was staying at the house the other day
and she wakes up and plays this song
every morning to her.
So this is like, special on that level,
but personally, when I'm singing it,
it's just a reminder that our job,
even in the storm,
is to stand on the factthat we are made to worship,
even when there's a storm.
- Yeah, Amen.
Well you gotta go prepare really quick,
so I'm gonna just
allow you to go to the music set,
but thank you so- Okay, bye.
(laughing)
- I wish we had more time with you.
Thank you so much, Anthony.
Thank you so much for being with us.
And there's more like I just said.
He's about to perform live
Raise a Hallelujah.
And you're going to want to get his album.
It is available wherever books are sold,
I'm sorry.
