That was such cute pictures of my kids.
- [Host] (laughs) It's fun, isn't it
when you get to see your own family.
- [Jonathan] Yeah!
- [Host] Yeah, that'sgreat. Well, it's fun
to have you here and getyour take on the relationship
between you and Tim Allen on this show.
What do you think makes it so special?
- [Jonathan] Oh, well. Like I said.
I keep saying that he, he and I
have different ideas about politics.
We have different ideas about
a lot of, a lot of key things.
But the really key thing we have
the same idea about is faith and family.
And that's what makes thecharacters stay together
and keep together and have a good rapport.
- [Host] I think that's why people love
the show so much because youshow that it can be done.
- [Jonathan] Yeah, absolutely.
And that's what's fun about it, you know?
Yeah, yeah, you canstill talk about politics
and about, you know, thingsthat are going on in the world.
- [Host] And live to tell about it.
- [Jonathan] And live to tell about it.
And not like lose yourbest friend or your kids.
- [Host] Absolutely, it'sthe way things used to be.
I don't know what's happened today.
I know that the show justwrapped its seventh season.
Let's take a quick look.
- [Jonathan] Oh, we have more.
- [Host] We have more.
- [Chuck] Sorry I amlate. Carol and I went out
for breakfast and I startedtalking about our anniversary
and I lost track of time.
- [Mike] Oh, what anniversary is it?
- [Chuck] Oh, 25 years next Saturday.
- [Mike] Congratulations.- [Chuck] Thanks.
- [Mike] Vanessa and I are 35 years.
- [Chuck] Yeah, I know. Carol and I like
having marriage old timers as friends.
In fact, I wanted totalk to you about that.
- [Mike] I'm done listeningfor the day, blame him.
(laughter)
- [Chuck] Oh, you were telling jokes?
(laughter)
- [Jay Leno] Scientist and amonkey and an elephant, okay?
- [Chuck] Oh, the onewhere there's diarrhea?
(laughter)
- [Chuck] Not cool.
- [Host] They're alreadyworking on season 8, right?
- [Jonathan] It's very funny because
it is actually my wife, my wife,
my actual, real life wifeand I's 25th anniversary
in April, it was. So yeah.
- [Host] Do they, do you have any say
in what's written into the series or?
- [Jonathan] No.
- [Host] No?
- [Jonathan] No, I just,I just go out and act.
No, really, it's just I don't.
They just, they, if Idid have any say in it,
it wouldn't be as funny,is all I have to say.
We have really great writerson the show, you know,
I do my thing and they do their thing,
and we come up with somereally, really fun, funny stuff.
- [Host] So how do youkeep it fresh, you know,
week after week, season after season.
I mean, you have to,
you've gone through a lotof different scenarios
that can be played out.How do you keep it fresh?
- [Jonathan] Well, you know,
my first thing is how youdo keep like, life fresh?
How do you keep your -
- [Host] Well, that'sa challenge, Jonathan.
- [Jonathan] It is achallenge, but I'm just saying,
how do you keep your day to day fresh?
You mix it up. You finddifferent aspects of it.
You make light of certain things.
You look deeper into other things.
You find your way through. You keep it fresh.
You just keep going.
- [Host] I know that faith and family play
a big part in the series, but also in your real life.
Talk a little bit aboutyour life growing up.
Were you, was your family,a family of believers?
- [Jonathan] Well, not really. We are what I like to call,
we were what I like tocall CEO Christians.
We were Christmas and Easter Only.
And that was really all we would do.
So you know, my mother and father
would dress us up forChristmas and Easter service,
and we'd go out and take pictures
and come back and whatever.
And it really wasn't a bigpart of our everyday life.
And when I grew up, Iwasn't a Christ follower.
I got into, I was basically an agnostic.
I was not a believer forreally quite some time.
- [Host] So how did you come to Christ?
- [Jonathan] My
beautiful wife,
Monica Farrell, now Adams,
was a believer, a very,very strong believer
in Christ Jesus and Icame to faith through her.
- [Host] Were you attracted to that?
Because it wasn't whatyou'd grown up with,
you said you were basically agnostic?
- [Jonathan] Yeah, and itwasn't what I'd grown up with.
And, was I?
Yes. I was, see, the way I say agnostic is
that you're searching for, for truth.
- [Host] You just haven't landed on it.
- [Jonathan] You just haven'tlanded on a truth yet.
- [Host] Yeah.
- [Jonathan] And I landed on
the truth of Christ eventuallyand it's changed my life.
- [Host] How has it impacted your work?
Because there's so much
just this argumentativein our culture today
about people who are people of faith,
people who are not, neverthe twins shall meet.
You work in a business that sometimes has
a very liberal perspective on things.
- [Jonathan] Absolutely.
- [Host] How do you dealwith that, Jonathan?
- [Jonathan] First ofall, I always try to,
whenever I'm reading somethingor trying to pick a role,
if I get to pick it at all is,
I'm looking for
if it has a sense of
if there is something violent,
if there is somethingdifficult in the piece.
That is has a sense thatit was there for a reason.
That you're trying to get somewhere.
Not just for the sake of it.
- [Host] Some redeeming qualities to it.
- [Jonathan] Someredeeming qualities to it.
And not necessarily, but
I think of my job as being like a mirror.
Like, I'm showing you what the world is
and what the world could be,you know, at the same time.
And so
I
I look for those kinds of roles
that will put that mirror up
and not just necessarily be, you know.
- [Host] The negative aspects of it.
- [Jonathan] Negative forthe sake of being negative.
- [Host] So everybody I know is waiting
for this series to begin again.
What can we expect in season 8?
- [Jonathan] You know what, I don't know.
- [Host] They let you know, do they?
- [Jonathan] They don'tlet me know anything.
They tell me, they say show up.
(laughter)
- [Host] And that's good news.
- [Jonathan] You know, justshow up. That's all I get.
No, no, no, I,
really, all I know is that
we're going to see more of my wife, Carol.
She's going to be coming back.
And we are,
And it's still going to be all about
you know, the fun that'sgoing on in our families.
- [Host] Is it ever scarywhen you're in a series
because you don't ever know for sure,
is the series coming back?
Is my role coming back?
I mean do you, are you always putting
your feelers out there for other options?
Or how do you handle that?
- [Jonathan] Well, I don't know.
To me, it's not so much scary anymore.
I spent a lot of time not,
I spent a lot of time looking for work.
And that becomes my work.
So my work is looking for work
and when I actually work, that's fun.
So, I always say I get paid for, you know,
for all the times thatI'm trying to find work.
And when I actually dothe work, that's actually,
that's actually the goldmine.
- [Host] Well, you hit upon a winner.
I mean people love the series.
