Read Transcript
- Mike Pompeo's life so far
includes a growing listof accomplishments:
eagle scout, first inhis class at West Point,
Harvard Law, congress,
and the first Americanto ever hold the top jobs
at both the CIA and the State Department.
His number one on the list,
remains a faithful decisionthough made back in college.
Can you take me back to West Point.
I know there was a time in your life
where there was a decision point for you
about following Christ.
- I grew up going to church on Sundays,
but frankly it wasn't apriority in my life growing up.
I went off to West Point
and as young cadetduring my Freshman year,
there were two young men who were Juniors
who were true men of faith.
They held these little biblestudies/cookie clatches
on Sunday afternoons.
They invited all the cadets to come.
It was purely voluntary
and I started showingup, truly remarkable.
So I started going to churchevery weekend on my own,
because I wanted to bethere to learn and to grow.
And some point during that first year,
I really did come to havean understanding of Jesus
that was different thanthe one that I had before.
It fundamentally changed my life.
- [David] That life is a busyone as Secretary of State.
Many issues facing him include:
a faith flavor, Mid-East peace,
religious persecution, many more.
And, it's an element he's not hiding.
- I'm proud to be here again,
not only as America's top diplomat,
but also as a man of faith.
- [David] This isn't new territory either.
Back in 2015 as a Kansascongressman in church,
he preached about thecultural battle ahead.
- We will to continueto fight these battles.
It is a never ending struggle.
Until that moment Pastor Fox spoke about,
until the rapture.
- [David] During his time on Capitol Hill,
the former Sunday schoolteacher spoke in religious tones
about radical Islamic terrorism.
- There's absolutely a minoritywithin the Muslim faith,
but these folks are serious, and they abhor Christians,
and will continue to pressagainst us until we make sure
that we pray, and stand, and fight,
and make sure that we knowthat Jesus Christ is our Savior
is truly the only solution for our world.
- [David] As CIA Director,
he attended regular bible studies.
As Secretary of State,
he hosted the State Department'sfirst worldwide conference
on religious freedom and made faith
a part of his first majorspeech as Secretary of State.
- We're all children of Abraham:Christians, Muslims, Jews.
In my office, I keep aBible open on my desk
to remind me of God andhis word, and the truth.
- Our recent interview withPompeo in Israel attracted news
of what you might describeas biblical proportions.
- Could it be thatPresident Trump right now
has been raised for such a time as this?
Just like Queen Esther, tohelp save the Jewish people
from an Iranian menace?
- As a Christian, I certainlybelieve that's possible.
- [David] And he's talking about God,
when it comes to Israel.
- I'm confident that theLord is at work here.
- [David] Pompeo also receives criticism
for injecting his faith into the equation.
- Oh God our Father, thousearcher of men's hearts,
help us to draw near tothe sincerity and truth.
May our religion be filled with gladness
and may our worship of thee be natural.
- There is nothing wrongwith a cabinet official
or government official, when asked,
to talk about their ownpersonal belief system.
What is wrong, is for him toapply as he appeared to do,
those Christian values,
those specificallyEvangelical Christian values
to the task of foreign policy.
- But for Pompeo, his worldview his informed by his faith.
There's no separating the two.
It's who he is.
Your faith has informedyour views clearly.
And not only that, but you'renot shy to talk about it.
I'm wondering about how thatreally manifests in your life.
- So of course, my missionas a Secretary of State.
The thing I rose my right hand to do,
I swore to support and defend
the Constitution of the United States.
I've done that now a handful of times.
First as a soldier, thenas member of Congress,
then as the Director of CIA,
and now as Secretary of State.
But in each of thosemissions, the task that I have
is informed by myunderstanding of my faith,
my belief in Jesus Christ as a Savior.
I think that makes a real difference,
so I want people to know.
It's why I talk aboutit from time to time.
I want folks to know theperspective that I am bringing
to the challenges in the job that I face.
It also requires me to try andhold myself to the standards
that Christians hold themselves out for.
- [David] It's not an easy task.
From North Korea to Iran, and everything in between,
he's the key man.
But Pompeo, who lovesRevolutionary War history,
is determined to forgeahead in both the diplomatic
and spiritual battle fields ahead.
