- [Announcer] This is CBN News Watch.

- Thanks for joiningus for CBN News Watch,

I'm Mark Martin.

Our top story, the manaccused of murdering 50

Muslim worshipers in a New Zealand mosque

wants to defend himself in court.

Australian Brenton Tarrant has fired

his court-appointed lawyer andsays he'll represent himself.

Gary Lane is following this story.

He joins us now with morefrom the CBN newsroom, Gary.

- Mark, court-appointedattorney Richard Peters

told the New Zealand Herald

that 28 year-old accusedterrorist Brenton Tarrant told him

that he wants to represent himself.

Peters says Tarrant does notappear mentally unstable.

The concern is his extremist views and

that could present achallenge for the court

when Tarrant's trial begins.

His 87 page manifesto hasalready given people a clue

about what can be expected if he's allowed

to defend himself and what can be expected

in the days ahead.

New Zealand's PrimeMinister says legislation

proposing tougher gun lawswill soon be considered

in that country.

As for now, the people of Christchurch

are praying for healing.

- [Man] That there was peacewithin that community, Lord.

- I hope justice is served

and may he be forgiven.

- And this appeared today inthe New Zealand Herald, Mark.

It's a photo of the husbandof one of the mosque's

shooting victims with the headline,

"I forgive him."

It's a story of Farid Ahmed.

He was paralyzed by adrunk driver six years ago.

His wife Husna rescuedchildren during the shooting

then she returned insideto get her husband out and

that's when she was shotin the back and killed.

Ahmed said while he doesn'tsupport what the shooter did,

he holds no grudge, he says,

if he had the opportunity,he would hug him.

- Wow, wow.

What a story of forgiveness there.

A lot of heartbreaking stories, Gary.

What else are you hearingabout what happened?

- Mark, some of thehardest ones, of course,

and I'm sure for you, they are for me

are the stories of littlechildren who were shot and killed

like this three year-old.

But some encouraging stories as well.

This little Americanboy's father shielded him

from gunfire during the attack.

The father was shotseveral times but both he

and his son survived.

- I know some Christians in this country

and around the world, Gary, have expressed outrage

that the mainstream mediagave so much attention

to the New Zealand mosqueattack, yet ignored a massacre

of Christians in Nigeria.

Can you elaborate on that?

- Yes, Mark.

Christian Solidarityreports that one week ago,

52 Christians were killed,

143 homes burned by Fulani Muslim gunmen

in Nigeria's Kaduna state.

17 people were killed in another incident

just on Sunday.

And since February in Kaduna state,

120 women, children, and other Christians

have been killed.

140 homes have been burned.

Now when people saw that, many took to social media,

talking about a double standard.

Why is it news when 50 Muslimsare killed in a mosque,

they ask, but not whenmore than 100 Christians

are killed in Nigeria?

- So what's your take?

Why isn't that being reported?

- Well, Mark, I know from my time

many years ago in South Sudan,I'd asked some journalists

why the slaughter of Christians there

wasn't getting much attention

and they told me this, they said,

"Tell us something new.

"This is happeningeveryday, it's only news

"when there's something new."

So I don't necessarilythink it's bias on the part

of journalists, I thinkthey're always looking for

a new angle, for a new story,

and a terrorist attack in NewZealand, in a mosque there

is rare.

Fulani herdsmen killingNigerian Christians

to seize land and water is not.

That's been going on for years they say.

Also, I think part of it hasto do with accessibility, Mark.

As it was in Sudan, itwas hard for journalists

to get in there, conditionswere harsh in Nigeria,

no comfortable beds, hotels, bars for them,

you had to rush into the bush.

Same for northern andnorth central Nigeria.

I tell ya, one big pointthough that's missing

from the coverage is thatlike Brenton Tarrant,

who felt he was justified inkilling Muslim immigrants,

many Muslim extremists inNigeria and around the world

believe it's okay to kill a Christian

because they are infidelsand they are less than human,

less than Muslims.

I think Tarrant saw theMuslims in that mosque as

less than human, so do the Fulani herdsmen

with the Christians.

And one final thought, Mark.

Back to Farid Ahmed, theparalyzed widower in New Zealand.

He said of Tarrant,

"I love that person because he's a human.

"A brother of mine."

That from a Muslim, Mark.

- Wow, a lesson to us all.

Thank you, Gary for your insights.

A gunman killed three peopleand wounded nine others

on a tram in the Netherlandsin what officials say

appeared to be a terror attack.

The Netherlands Anti-Terror Coordinator

raised the threat alertto its highest level

around the Dutch city of Utrecht.

Heavily armed officers floodedthe area after the shooting,

launching a massive manhuntfor a 37 year-old man

born in Turkey whoauthorities say was associated

with the incident.

Authorities did say therecould be more than one shooter.

The Dutch Prime Ministersaid a terror motive

is not excluded and thatthere is a mix of disbelief

and disgust in the country.

A terrorist killed anIsraeli soldier and a Rabbi

in an attack near a Jewishsettlement on Sunday.

It happened in the city of Ariel

in the territory of Judea and Samaria,

also known as the West Bank.

The attacker stabbed thesoldier, took his weapon,

and shot him to death.

He then began spraying cars with gunfire.

Rabbi Ahiad Ettinger, a father of 12

died from his wounds.

Another Israeli is in critical condition.

Israeli security forces continueto search for the suspect.

- [Interpreter] I'm surethey'll apprehend him

and we'll deal with him tothe fullest extent of the law

as in all the recent incidents.

- In Gaza, Palestinianshanded out sweets to celebrate

what one tweet called a heroic morning.

Wow, a lot to pray about.

Brazil's new president has been in office

less than 100 days and already he's making

seismic changes to SouthAmerica's largest nation.

Jair Bolsonaro will meetPresident Donald Trump

at the White House Tuesday for his first

overseas bi-lateral meetingsince taking office.

The two leaders are expectedto discuss a wide range

of issues, including trade, the crisis in Venezuela,

and steps to strengthen relations between

our two countries.

Shortly after his Oval Office visit,

Bolsonaro will sit down foran exclusive interview with

CBN News Senior InternationalCorrespondent George Thomas

to discuss the significanceof his historic win.

And George joins us nowfrom the White House

for a preview of PresidentBolsonaro's visit.

George, what can we expect ofthe Brazilian leader's visit

with President Trump tomorrow?

- He arrives here at theWhite House promptly at noon

and between noon and1:45, he will meet with

President Trump, theywill have a luncheon,

and talk about these issuesthat you just mentioned.

Trade is foremost on the agenda.

So to is the ongoing crisis in Brazil--

in Venezuela.

As you know, thousands ofVenezuelans have fought,

have sought refuge in neighboring Brazil

as the crisis continues to unfold.

President Bolsonaro took the unusual step

weeks ago to side with the United States,

along with some 60 othernations, calling for the

socialist dictator inVenezuela, Nicolas Maduro

to step down and so the president will use

his meeting tomorrow to talkabout ways they can continue

to put the political, aswell as the economic squeeze

on Maduro.

They're gonna be talkingabout closer relations

between these two countries.

By the way, the UnitedStates is the second largest

trading partner withBrazil, next to China.

Clearly, this is an administration

compared to previousadministrations, Mark,

that wants closer tieswith the United States,

wants closer ties withIsrael so that is gonna be

on top of the agenda duringtheir meeting tomorrow.

- Bolsonaro is an admirerof the president, correct?

- He actually is.

In fact, commentators inBrazil like to call him the

Trump of the tropics.

Some call him the Brazilian Trump.

He has this admiration for President Trump

party because like

President Trump, President Bolsonaro

is an outsider, a political outsider.

He basically came from political obscurity

and had a message of fightingwidespread corruption,

fighting the leftistagenda that has dominated

Brazilian politics fora very, very long time.

And he wanted to restorethe sort of identity,

especially the Christianidentity of Brazil.

He wanted to fight for thefamily, the institution

of the family.

He has said so many times

that the leftist agenda has in essence,

attacked and launched anall out assault on Brazil's

family institution and he has promised

to roll back thoseefforts to fight against

the leftist agenda.

And so yes, he is seen as sort of

an admirer of Trump.

He, like Trump, loves social media.

He is a master, in fact, at social media.

He avoids mainstream media,

doing television interviews, and so he goes directly

to his supporters by taking to Facebook,

Twitter as well as Instagram.

- Was President Bolsonaro'svictory a political earthquake

for South America'slargest nation, George?

- It absolutely has been.

I mean, this is the first timein Brazil's democratic era

that you have a conservative leader.

As I mentioned, Brazilian politics since

the fall of the sort ofmilitary dictatorship

in the early '80s, this isthe first time that Brazil

has had a non-leftistgovernment and it has

clearly sent

a political earthquake, not just in Brazil,

but across South Americaand Latin America.

- And quickly, what can youtell us about his faith?

- He is a Catholic,

he's married to Michelle also Bolsonaro

who's an Evangelical, whoattends a Baptist church.

Let me also mention that tomorrow evening,

CBN News has an exclusiveinterview just a few steps

away from here at the Blair House.

That is where foreigndignitaries and heads of state

get a chance to come andstay and we will have

a one on one interview which will then air

on the CBN News channel.

You can catch it right here on Wednesday.

- Okay, alright.

Our Senior InternationalCorrespondent George Thomas

reporting from the White House.

Thank you, George.

- You're welcome.

- Iran's president onMonday urged Iranians

to put a curse on the U.S.,Israel, and Saudi Arabia.

President Hassan Rouhani'sremarks were meant to deflect

criticism of hisadministration's performance

after President Trumplast year pulled America

out of the nuclear dealand reimposed sanctions

on Tehran.

Rouhani urged Iraniansto put all your curses

on those who createdthe current situation.

He claimed the U.S. plan wasto dominate the Iranian nation

but said it was not going to be possible.

Rouhani first came to power in 2013,

was re-elected for a second term in 2017

promising to improve theeconomy and foster more

open relations with the world.

The expansive list of2020 Democratic candidates

grew a little bigger over the weekend

but it was a slip of the tonguefrom former Vice President

Joe Biden that's fuelingthe fire of speculation.

A slip that indicates he'sgetting ready to declare

for the White House himself.

- I have the most progressiverecord of anybody running

for the Uni--

anybody who would run.

(audience applause)

- [Mark] Biden's friend,Delaware Democratic Senator

Chris Coons is alsoadding to the speculation.

- Well I'm very optimisticthat Joe Biden will soon

formally announce hiscampaign for the presidency.

- [Mark] But a long politicalcareer could mean more

than a few stumbling blocks for Biden.

He's going to have to answerquestions about everything

from his role in the AnitaHill testimony during

the Clarence Thomas hearingsto his voting record.

And our team in D.C. willhave more on the latest

in Washington on tonight's Faith Nation

and you can catch that righthere on the CBN News channel.

148 million.

But it was three littlegirls that taught me

about the plight of orphans.

My husband and I spentnearly a month immersed

in the daily activitiesof a Ukrainian orphanage

as we waited to adopt three sisters.

I saw firsthand the utterloneliness, the pain of rejection,

and the overwhelming desire to be loved.

That experience changed me forever

and out of it grew aministry from my heart

Friday's Jerusalem Marathonmarked its ninth year

for the event.

Runners come from allover the world to run

through the streets ofhistorical and modern Jerusalem.

As Julie Stahl reports, this year a special group

of Christians came to run for Zion.

- [Julie] The Run For Zionrunners huddled to pray

before the race.

- Well good morning.

This is perfect running conditions.

So as a runner, I don't carewhere I'm at on the planet,

I'm already joyful.

Just in faith and justthat God has provided

the perfect day to run.

But my goodness, we arein the promised land.

- We're bringing our firstteam of Run For Zion.

This is the first timethat anyone in the history

of the Jerusalem Marathon has

promoted this as a Christian experience.

- [Julie] JonathanFeldstein is the President

of Run For Zion.

- And as an Orthodox Jew, itsjust so awesome and humbling

for me to be able to providethat experience for people.

- [Julie] He says hisorganization gives Christians

an opportunity to experienceIsrael beyond what tours offer.

- [Jonathan] Thisprovides a different prism

for people to be able to come and have a

unique experience through running

with touring on both sides.

But we've also built up the opportunity

to bless Israel, not just by being here,

but by raising moneyfor various nonprofits

that we're supporting.

- So it's a privilege to be able to

move our feet to help the Jewish people.

- [Julie] Pastor Ray Hardeefrom Belmont, North Carolina

and Elizabeth Wong from Phoenix, Arizona

came to run for Zion in the full marathon.

- Run For Zion is an organization

that is designed to help those people that

are Jewish, Holocaustsurvivors, (inaudible)

those people that are homeless,

those people that are returning on Aliyah

from Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Jews and so

we wanna be part of helpingto make those things happen.

- I came here because it is

the 70th anniversary ofthe modern state of Israel,

the first anniversary ofthe American Embassy's move

to Jerusalem, and

Jonathan's a personal friend.

I really believe in the vision that

Run For Zion and integrity and

excellence that he walks in.

- [Julie] Dr. Pat Castleis Founder and President

of the largest pro-liferunning group in the world.

He and his wife, Angie cameto run the half marathon.

- All in Christ.

- [All] For pro-life.

(cheering)

- I wanted to be righthere where Christ walked.

I wanted to run his footsteps.

- This'll be my 60th half marathon

and here we are in the Holy Land so

as the Founder and the Presidentof the largest pro-life

team in the world, itis an absolute blessing

to represent 10,617 teammates here.

to have as many as 500 Christians
