After Accusations of Racism and Infanticide, Resignation Calls Grow Louder for Embattled Gov. Northam

- Governor Ralph Northamsays he's staying in office
despite that growing chorus ofdemands for his resignation.
In Richmond.
- Eat this one and resign.
- [Amber] The angry voices of Virginians
fill the streets outsidethe Governor's Mansion.
On Friday, Northam apologized
and said he was one of two people pictured
in that racist photo appearing in the 1984
Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook.
But on Saturday.
- I was appalled thatthey appeared on my page,
but I believed then and now
that I am not either ofthe people in that photo.
- [Amber] His friend andformer Virginia Governor
Terry McAuliffe isn't buying it.
- Instinctively, you know if you put
black paint on your face.
You know if you put a hood on.
- [Amber] He's just one ofa multitude of Democrats
condemning the governor.
With race relations a likelyhot button issue for 2020,
nearly every major declaredand potential candidate
were on the record early,
rebuking Northam andsaying he should resign.
President Trump also joining in.
But at least one Democrat
thinks Northam should remain in office.
- Because I think it is a rush to judgment
before we know all of the facts.
Facts that we do know, thatRalph has expanded Medicaid
to hundreds of thousandsof uninsured Virginians,
a disproportionate number ofwhom are African Americans.
- [Amber] Even so, McAuliffe,like other Democrats,
believe it's time to moveon to new leadership.
- We have to move Virginia forward.
Justin Fairfax, AfricanAmerican lieutenant governor,
will do a great job ofbringing folks back together.
- 39-year-old Fairfax isa Columbia Law graduate
and the second African American in history
to win a statewide election in Virginia.
