- Welcome everyone to thePrayer Link, I'm Wendy Griffith.
- And I'm Charlene Aaron, and we are at Christmas,
and I can't believethat Christmas is here,
- It always sneaks up on me.
- I know, every year.- We have all year
to get ready for it, and then it's like,
oh my gosh, it's Christmaslike in five days.
- It's here.
So what's your plans for Christmas?
How do you plan to spend it?
- I am going to AlmostHeaven, West Virginia.
- Almost Heaven, wow.
- My parents still live in West Virginia,
and I'm taking my fiance.
For the first time he's gonna see-
I said you've got to see where I came from
before we tie the knot.
You need to know.- Yes.
- He needs to know.- He needs to know.
- And my family loves him, so he's gonna
get to have a West Virginia Christmas.
- I love it, I love it.
And me and my family, you know,
I have two grandchildren now.- Yes.
They're so adorable.- But it's so hard
because I have to splitthem between you know,
spending time with us for Christmas
and spending time withthe other grandparents.
- Right, right.- So, I'm greedy.
I want to have themtogether we me all the time.
- Okay, just inviteeverybody over to your house.
- Well, we'll see how that works out.
- We'll see how it works.- They're sweet people.
They're sweet people.- Hey look at our cool emojis.
- Isn't that adorable?
All right.
- Well, Christmas is the mostbeautiful time of the year.
We all enjoy the sparkle, thelights, the food and the fun,
and if you still need to trimthe tree and deck the halls,
here's a look at just how easy it can be
to decorate on a dime.
Check out this editionof Home with Heather.
- Hey friends, welcome to my house.
Here we like to create, inspire,
and just be ourselves, andjust like the song says
it's the most wonderful time of the year.
It's a great time for friends and family
to get together to celebrate Christmas,
and speaking of family,I have a very special
family member here today joining me,
my most favoritest mom, AKA Mimi.
Say hi, Mom.
- Hi, everybody.
- We don't live close, but when we get together
we love to have a good time.
And we don't even look the same,
but we sure are wired the same.
We both are always looking for
a good deal and to save money.
So today we want to share with you
some really fun Christmas DIYs
that won't break thebank and that cost less
than a peppermint white chocolate mocha,
and it's quicker than thedrive-through to pick it up.
So we're gonna start here with this
super warm and cozy wreath.
First you're gonna take a pool noodle.
That is what you're gonna need first.
Then you're gonna need a scarf,
some ribbon that youprobably have laying around.
Then you're gonna want to head to your
teenager's room for the duct tape,
push pins, and somegreenery that you can even
clip off your own Christmas tree
to put on your wreath.
So this is what we're gonna do.
You're gonna take yournoodle, put it together.
Then you're gonna takeyour pieces of duct tape,
and you're simply going toattach the noodle like this,
and then you're gonna kinda-
You're gonna add a couple more, but
you're gonna bend it into place,
and then you're gonna take your scarf
and if you don't havea scarf in your closet,
you can pick them upat the treasure store,
AKA, thrift store, andyou're just gonna keep
rolling it and rolling it and rolling it.
You get the idea, until the whole thing is
completely covered, and then you want to
add your embellishments like I have here
with just some ribbon andmy pine, which is real,
and it's just a great little touch.
Next, we're gonna look atsomething with a sweater.
So you want to go backto your closet again
and pull out a sweaterthat you have tucked away
and if you don't want to part with any,
you want to go to thetreasure store again.
And with an old sweater you canuse lots of ideas with this.
But today we only have time for two.
And this involve this ornament.
Isn't this adorable?
- Oh, I love this.
- This is either a great giftidea or you can make several
of these for your own tree.
And all you really need is a sweater
and an embroidery hoop.
And I got these ...
I got two for $3 with my coupon
and it is so cute.
Wait 'til you see how you make these.
You're just going to layit flat on your sweater.
You're going to put your hoop down.
And then, I have one already cut here,
you're going to cut aroundyour embroidery hoop.
Slide this down like this so you can see,
you're going to put it on there like that
and then simply put it around.
As you can see, we'reforming our ornament.
Then you're going to justcut around and voila,
here we go.
And this is also a time where you can add
really cute embellishmentslike pine or berries
or ribbon.
That will just make everyonesmile if you give that
for a gift.
- Wow. That is clever.
- Isn't that so cute?- Yes. That's cute.
- Now we're going to keepworking with our sweater
and this is going to be thebest idea that you have seen
all year.
We call these vase koozies.
I have some set up here.
These are all just vasesthat I had around my house.
So shop around your house.
Find some cute vases.
Some of these were just a dollar.
Some of these are old jars that I found
from the thrift store.
And we are going tospruce them up a little.
And how you do this, itliterally takes seconds
and you're going to bekoozeying everything in sight.
All you need is thesleeve of your sweater.
And you're going to measure with your jar.
I have a jar here that you're doing.
You're just going to put it over there
and see really where you need to cut it.
And then, can you see, Mom?- Yes.
- You're going to cut it right off.
And you saw that was like three seconds
and we're going to put it over and voila.
(squeals)- Oh, I'm stealing that idea.
- Isn't that the cutest.- That is so clever.
- So now we need somethingfun to put in these jars.
And that is our last but greatest.
Something salt and sweetto spice things up.
And that's Mimi's famous M&M pretzels.
- I've been known to make these pretzels,
probably thousands of thesepretzels over the years.
All you do is get a baking sheet,
line them with your pretzels,
you can actually findpretzels this time of year
that are shaped like stars,- So cute.
- Bells, trees,- Trees.
- Put them on your baking sheet,
then go to your candy store, get a little candy disk,
put them in the center of every pretzel,
put them in the oven, 350 for two minutes,
bring them out and thenput your little M&M
right in the center.
You can see here, they're all ready to go.
Then you can put them in a cute little jar
and give them as little gifts.
- Great gift idea, especially for teachers.
And this will earn you adouble A plus for affordability
and adorableness.
And remember, the greatestgift that you will receive
this Christmas isn't found under the tree
but it was found under a manger.
So merry Christmas fromour house to yours.
And remember, a home is a placewhere you express yourself.
So you be you and we'll be usand we'll see you next time
At Home with Heather.

- I was behind the wheel of a car
and was about to end it all.
When you go through abuse,
it's like somethinghandicaps you in that moment.
My life has been, youknow, one direction up,
down, sideways, I've beenjust like the trajectory
of a knuckle ball.
God wants to love you where you are.
Wherever that is.
In your brokenness.
He wants to be therewith you in that moment.
God is in control of my lifeand I'm thankful for it.
- Adrienne Young is knownas the thrifting queen.
She has even writtena book about it called
"Don't Go ThriftingWithout Me: A Mini-Guide to
Maximize the Benefits of Thrifting".
Adrienne joins us now fromSouth Carolina to share more
about the idea ofthrifting for the holidays.
Welcome Adrienne.
- Thank you, Charlene.
Glad to be here.
- First of all, whendid you first get into
this whole idea of thrifting?
- It first started happeningin high school and then
as I merged and I got marriedand started having children
I remember entering back intomy school counseling career
and watching the amazingshow, "What Not To Wear",
with Stacy London and Iremember making a list of
everything I would needand not wanting to pay $100
for a pair of slacks and shoes.
My in laws at that time, blessed me,
it was around Christmas, blessed me with a $100.
I went to Goodwill that day, that next day when it opened
and I got everything Ineeded in my wardrobe
and had change left over.
From that point on, I was hooked
- I love it.
I love the fact ofhaving change left over.
You say that there is a processwhen it comes to thrifting.
What are some of the insidesecrets of the trade?
- I'm so excited toshare this with you all.
One of the things, it is soimportant that you remember
is why are you going in the store?
I know some people go just to go,
but for me there is a whole process.
For instance, let's say,you are looking particular
for black slacks.
It's important that you justgo exactly where that area is,
find the black slacksand look through them.
Now, if you have time left over,
absolutely peruse the otherareas, but stay focused
on what your needs are, andhave a list and a budget.
That helps you.
When you're trying onclothes, I always say
make sure you have onyour thrifing uniform.
I talk about this a lot in the book.
There are some instanceswhere you don't have time
to try on right in the dressing rooms,
they might be full,
some thrift stores maynot have a dressing room,
so you dress appropriately.
For instance, I wear, maybeleggings and a fitted tee
with a duster so I can justtry them on really quickly
and get in and out if Idon't have a lot of time.
- Well, it is Christmas time.
We're just days away from Christmas.
Talk about thrifting for the holidays.
I love this idea.
What kind of deals areout there right now?
- Right now, you can get Christmas decor.
For instance I thrifted a Christmas tree.
A six foot pre-lit Christmas tree for $30.
You can get your holiday ornaments.
You can also get littletrinkets and things
to set around your home.
But you can also thrift for gifts.
You would not believehow many items out there,
such as toys, you can get handbags, shoes,
sometimes brand new and bless the people
in your circle around the holidays.
- Your newly released book,
"Don't Go Thrifting Without Me",
what motivated you to write it?
- It was totally a God thing.
I started this book in 2014.
I had a Don't Go ThriftingWithout Me community,
over 2,000 men and women.
And when God called meinto full-time ministry,
He told me to give that community away.
So I walked away and Ipursued full-time ministry.
I still thrifted along, but I was not as involved
in the group.
And then I read a prophetic by Lana Bowser
about how God was risingup scribes and writers
in this season and firewent into your fingers.
I had an amazing friendwho had a prayer group
and she, on that night, did a prayer for writers
pulling out some of thosethings from Lana's book
and her prophetic thing and literally
fire hit my fingers.
So the Holy Spirit lead me to go upstairs
and grab my lap top.
And I thought, okay I'mgoing to start working on
women who war, which is a book I'm writing
for a conference coming up.
And He said, "No, go pick upDon't Go Thrifting Without Me".
And that was around 10 o'clock that night,
I started writing and in two hours I had
completely finished thebook, I emailed my editor,
and she said, "Let's get that one out.
- Adrienne Young, thank youso much for taking the time
to talk with us.
The book is called, "Don'tGo Thrifting Without Me"
and it is sold wherever books are found.
Thank you so much.
God bless you.
- Thank you.
- I was Muslim for four years,
I had spells cast on me,
just everything you could think of.
I never got what I was looking for.
There was no real power to change my life.
I had tried everything,it just came to a point
where it was, like, you know what,
I don't want to do this anymore.
The little old lady at the church,
she'd come and get me.
She prayed for me.
And all I know is I felt the love of God.
We would read from Genesis to Revelation.
And we just went deep in the Word of God.
Everything about me,
even my very countenance beganto change after that point.
And now I just have a desireto see them experience
the loving kindness of Godthat I have experienced.
To see that true change is possible
and that what you thoughtyou were looking for
can only be found in Christ.
- From tree decorating to holiday baking,
Christmas is filledwith so many traditions.
And one of my favorites ismaking Christmas cookies
and cakes.
That's why I employed thehelp of chef Tasha Davis.
Many say that her foodis seasoned with love.
She's the owner and operator of
Be Creative, Be Delicious Catering.
She joined me in theCBN test kitchen earlier
to whip up a unique holiday treat.
Welcome to Prayer Link, chef Tasha.
- Thank you, Charlene, how are you today?
- I am great.
We all love the holidays, and we love cooking,
especially near a chef.
What are some of yourfavorite holiday treats
that you like to cook up?
- Well, a cake that has to be on our table
is my toasted coconut pineapple cake.
It's warm, delicious, and it's awesome.
- It sounds amazing.
- It is.
- And you have another cakethat you really like to do.
- Yes. And it's my banana pudding cake.
- We're going to make that today.
- Yes.
- Tell us what's in it.
- Okay, so what we're going to do is
we're going to start offwith two cups of sugar.
- Alright.
- And you just pour it the mixer.
And then we're going to haveone cup of softened butter,
you can leave it out at room temperature.
- [Charlene] And it'simportant for it to be
at room temperature.
- [Tasha] Absolutely. 'Causeit effects the baking process
if you have cold butter.
- [Charlene] Okay.
- And that's just two sticks of butter
for you out there in TV land.
And then you have one cupof my secret ingredient
which is pretty much banana pudding mix.
- [Charlene] It's no longer a secret, now.
- [Tasha] It's no longer a secret.
- [Charlene] The word is out.
- So what you do, you want to blend it
and then you want it to combineso it's nice and fluffy.
So what we have here is foureggs at room temperature.
And what you want to do is you want to
incorporate them one at a time.
So we're going to putour first egg in, ploop.
- [Charlene] Oh, wow. Okay.
- [Tasha] Oh, yeah.
- [Charlene] So make sure not to dump
all four them at one time.
- 'Cause it'll break thebutter and the sugar.
So what you want to do is youwant to turn off your mixer,
you want to scrape the sides.
'Cause that's where all the goodness is.
So after all of that,
what you want to do is you want to take
your two and halfteaspoons of baking powder
into two and three-fourths cups of sifted
all-purpose flour.
And then, what we want to do is,
we have one table spoon of pure vanilla.
So I like to incorporatethat into my milk.
And what you want to do is, wet and dry.
So you always want tostart with your flour
and end with your flour
- Start with the flourand end with the flour.
- Right.
- Why is that important?
- It's important becauseif you end with the wet
then you're going tohave a real lose batter
and you don't want to do that.
- Wow, I never thought of that before.
- Yup, and it's 'til it's just combined.
You don't want to over beat it,
because then you'll have a dry cake.
So what you want to do isyou want to turn it down
because you don't want toover beat it, like I said.
- [Charlene] How much banana is this?
- This is a half a cup,I'm sorry, of banana puree.
What it is is just onebanana, depending on the size,
it's usually one banana should be fine.
And you'll smash it upand then you add it last
because it adds moisture andyou don't want to over beat it.
- And Chef Tasha, you say
that baking with love is so important.
Why is that?
- It is because you cantell the difference.
Have you ever ate food fromsomewhere and you're like,
they just didn't care?
- Yeah.
- You can taste it andpeople know the difference
when you cook with loveverses when you cook
just to be cooking.
So I love everything that I do.
So I make sure thatwhen I cook that people
can feel it in every dish that I make.
- That's awesome. Awesome.
Are we going to pour thisinto the pans, now? Wow.
- Oh yeah. So you want to make sure
you get to the bottom of that.
And I have two sprayed pans.
You can just use yourfavorite non-stick spray
or some people like to usethe shortening and flour.
So you just do the shorteningand then dust if with flour.
- Wonderful.
- And then what you're going to do is
you're going to bake it at 350 degrees
in a preheated oven for about 30 minutes,
depending on your oven.
It may be about 25.
- And by the magic of television,
we have two here thathave already been baked.
They're nice and cool andyou're going to show us
how you actually beginto decorate this beauty.
- [Tasha} Alright, so what I have here
is just banana pudding,
you just follow the directions on the box,
so you get to make it from scratch.
And I use one package of creamcheese at room temperature.
- [Charlene] Ooo, creamcheese and bananas.
- Yes. You want to blend the cream cheese
until it's nice and smooth and then
you incorporate it into the pudding.
You get a nice consistency.
I like to put it inthe fridge for a minute
so that way it's nice and thick
because you don't want aloose pudding up there.
So this is how I layer it.
- [Charlene] I am so ready to try this -
- Oh yeah.
So after you get that smoothed out,
what you want to do is youwant to grab your bananas
because it's a banana pudding cake.
- [Charlene] You havea banana that's cut up.
- [Tasha] Yeah, I have onebanana, but I usually put
one and a half, depending onhow much you like bananas.
- [Charlene] On each layer?
- [Tasha] On each layer, then you repeat the process.
So you take this, and youalways want to have your bottom
facing up, then you putit up there and repeat.
- [Charlene] Voila!
- We have one that's already finished.
And have fun with it.
You can decorate it any type of way you-
- This is gorgeous.
- Thank you so much.
- [Charlene] I can'twait to taste a piece.
- [Tasha] You want to try?
- I certainly do want to try it. Wow.
Very easy.
It's not a very difficult recipe.
- Nah, it's not.
It just looks like ittook a whole lot of time
and that's what you want.
You want people to think you took -
- [Charlene] With love.
- [Tasha] Yes.
- Oh wow. OMG, y'all. Look at that.
That's gigantic.
Wow, here we go.
- (laughs)
- It's Christmas in my mouth. Delicious.
- Thank you so much.
- Absolutely scrumptious. Mm.
- Thank you.
You want to keep it in the fridge
because it has fresh bananas,
you don't want them to get brown on you.
- [Charlene] Absolutely scrumptious.
Wendy, oh my gosh.
- Was it good?
- That was so much fun.
It was delicious.
Oh my gosh.
We also baked and decoratedsome gingerbread cookies.
- Ahh. Are we going to see that.
- No, unfortunately, we ran out of time.
But I had one.
- Nice. Thank you so much.
Well, to learn how to makeyour gingerbread cookies
a holiday hit, you can visit CBN.com.

- And welcome back to the Prayer Link.
We are joined now by a fabulous guest,
Jodie Berndt, she's theauthor of a series of books
on praying for your children.
Welcome to the Prayer Link.
- Thank you so much, Wendy.
It's a treat to be here.
- Well of course it's Christmas time
and we're talking about gift giving
and you're going to tellus something interesting
about giving the gift ofprayer to your children.
Whatever made you decide to do this?
- Well we have four children.
We had four kids in six years,
and just like a lot ofparents, I think you scramble
to find that perfect giftand we have had some doozeys.
One year, our daughterwanted a My Size Barbie.
She was probably aboutthree and half feet tall,
our daughter was
and so was Barbie.
She begged and begged and begged.
We thought, no it's tooexpensive, it's too crazy,
but you know we finally caved.
I think two days beforeChristmas we went to three
different stores, found it,
and I still considerthat one of our biggest
gift-giving failsbecause Christmas morning
our daughter tore off allthe wrapping, was so happy,
and tore off Barbie'sclothes, put them on her
and that was that.
I thought, there's got to be a better way
and I'm never going tobe one of these parents
that says don't get into the gifts.
I think that's an important thing
to honor Christ's birthday.
But I thought there'sgot to be something else
and I remembered my grandmother who never
gave us anything.
She would say, I want you tomemorize a Bible verse for me.
And in return, I will pray for you.
I thought, that didn't really appeal,
like as a teenager I wouldrather have a present.
But now that I'm grown,
I think all of her prayershave worked so much more
in my life than any giftshe could have given me,
and the Bible verses sheasked us to memorize,
one a year, taught us moreabout things like wisdom,
and compassion, andkindness than anything else.
- And that's what you've been doing now
for several years,
is every Christmas you'vebeen giving your children,
all four of them,
two are grown and married now,
and two are in college?
- Yes, uh, no.
Well, two are married, and one is out of college,
and one is still in college,
but yes, ever since they were young,
I would spend a littlebit of time in December
and I would think about where they were.
Socially, intellectually,spiritually, emotionally,
and kind of what maybe their needs were.
What God might want to do in their life.
And I loved to pray scripturally,
to use God's words in theBible to sort of shape
and animate my desires and my prayers
and so I'd picked one particular verse
and I would let that kind ofbe the gift for that year.
At first I think theythought it was kind of silly.
But now that we've donethis for 15, 20 years,
they really actually get excitedafter all the other gifts
are open to see what God mightwant to give them that year
through the parents prayers.
Just a neat tradition.
- Sort of has a prophetic edge on it.
- A little bit of that.
- You've prayed, asked Godwhat is the scripture for them
and thought about their lives.
And you have an exampleof one of your prayers.
- When they were little, Iused to trace their hands
and I would ... you know, trace them on colored paper,
and I'd write the prayer verseright on there and date it.
Now their big and it would lookcreepy to trace their hands
so I do it on little index cards
and keep them in my journal.
But this is from 2001 and our son Robbie,
at the time, he's our youngest.
He's an athlete, whichsounds like a great thing,
but when he was probably in kindergarten,
we discovered that he could hit anything
whether it was a ballor, like, a classmate
with equal dexterity.
And so you're kind of going, okay, no hitting your siblings,
no hitting your classmates.
He really lacked self-control.
He had some anger issues.
And I'm sure there'ssomebody out there that
has a child like that.
I hope there is.
I don't know, I was kindof at the end of my rope.
That was the year that Ipicked Proverbs 23:23-24.
And I said, "Heavenly Father, help Robbie get wisdom,
discipline, and understanding.
Let him be the righteousman who brings his parents
great joy, the wiseson in whom we delight.
- How did he react whenyou gave that to him.
- Well, he was prettyyoung and he just thought
okay, trace my hand.
You know, that kind of thing.
But I will say that as the year went on
I was discouraged atfirst because I didn't see
the needle moving anddon't we know that God
doesn't just say, "Oh,you prayed this. Answer."
And I would go to theparent-teacher conferences
and I would just want tocry because, you know ...
And so I went to one more conference
and the teacher I could see,
I could see looking at theform that she had a zero
by behavior, and I though,"Here we go again."
And I wanted to cry and she said,
"You know, I don't knowwhat you're doing at home,
but Robbie has really becomea bright spot in our class."
- Really. You're looking at the zero.
- That's what I thought.
She said, "Oh no, no. It's not a zero."
she flipped it around and she said,
"That's an O for outstanding."
- Wow.
- That was the kind of thing ...
As I say, it didn't happen over night,
it was months of despair,
and I would even say it's been years
as he's grown, as I've continued to pray.
He's 23 now, and I will saythat if you look at him,
that anger, and that lack of self control
have really been replacewith wisdom and discipline.
I mean, he's not perfect, no child is.
But it's God and it's his word.
- That is so encouraging.
And of course you can do that,
not just at Christmas time,
but any other ...
I did this one year, years ago,
and it's such a great reminder because
it's a gift that keeps giving.
- Absolutely, it's one of these things ...
Talk about My Size Barbie,
this is something thatdoesn't go out of style,
doesn't cost anything,
- It's from the heart.
- It's from the heart.
It's available to all of us.
You know, so I justthink it's a great gift
to give somebody.
Your children, your spouse, your friends.
- It's amazing.
Well you have written, notone book, but three books,
"Praying the Scripturesfor Your Children" and
"Praying the Scripturesfor your Teens" and
"Praying the Scriptures alsofor Your Adult Children."
They have different needs.
Now the two of them are married,
so that must be adifferent role for you now.
- Yeah. They have different needs,
but I will say that I don'tthink there's a need we face
in parenting, or in any of life,
that God has not alreadythought of and provided for
in His Word.
If it's compassion you need,
He's got verses, He'sgot promises for that.
If it's physical health, and safety, and protection,
we know promises for that.
And the books are arranged sothat the back of every chapter
you find the topic you needand you can read the story
and the principles,
but then you can flip to the back
and get that Bible verse to pray.
And I think that's reallywhere the power is.
- Well Jodie, I'm sure thereare lot of people out there
saying, "I want to do this".
This is a great gift, if they need help
maybe figuring out what scripture to pick
or strategize -
- Well, I'll say therearen't any bad ones.
People say, "What ifI pick the wrong one?"
I'm like, no, they're all -
- Where would they go, or ifthey want to get your books?
- Well my website, JodieBerndt.com
has a lot of free resources.

A little girl in Texas hadan inoperable brain tumor
but now it's gone.
11 year old Roxley Dossunderwent weeks of radiation
for her cancer.
In June, doctors gave herlittle hope of survival.
So her family prayed for her a miracle.
- [Wendy] And God answered.
Little Roxley is now cancer free
and is back to doing whatshe loves, riding horses.
Her doctors have no explanation
for why the tumor disappeared.
But we know it was God.
- It was truly a Christmas miracle.
