- [Announcer] This is CBN Newswatch.
- And thank you so much forjoining us, I'm Efrem Graham.
The Senate Judiciary Committee
is reviewing a third allegation against
Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Attorney Michael Avenattiis representing the woman,
and tweeted his client witnessed Kavanaugh
"consistently engagein excessive drinking,
"and inappropriate conductof contact of a sexual nature
"with women in the early 1980s."
Meanwhile the committee is moving ahead
with its plans to hear from Kavanaugh
and his first accuser,Christine Blasey Ford, Thursday,
and plans for a vote as early as Friday.
- To me, these are clearly attempts,
and frankly, attempts by the Democrats,
that I think they oughta inmany cases be ashamed of,
to try, at the eleventh hour,
to destroy the reputation of an individual
based upon some, I wouldargue, pretty flimsy evidence.
- I'm hopeful that after this experience
people can see the benefit of returning
to more civil, dignified wayof consider the nominations.
If we wanna continueto recruit good people
to hold these very important positions,
it's important we notexpose their families
to death threats.
- [Reporter] DemocraticMinority Leader Chuck Schumer
blasted Republicans for labeling
the accusations as a "smear campaign,"
and again called for an FBI intervention.
- If you want the truth,
you ask for an FBIbackground investigation.
If you're afraid of the truth,
you avoid an FBI background investigation.
- President Donald Trumpis standing by his nominee,
saying the attorney representing the woman
is making quote "false accusations."
Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina
also issued a statement saying
"I would remind everyonethat dozens of women
"who knew Judge Kavanaughduring that time period
"in question completely vouchfor his good character."
Brad Jacobs with RegentUniversity School of Law
joins us now to talk more about
where things stand with the hearing
and the upcoming vote.
So, your thoughts first onthese latest developments.
- Well, there's more accusations.
We have to always take seriously women
who say they've been harmed.
The problem is, each oneof these as they follow
seems to be less crediblethan the ones before.
There's no corroboration.
If anyone had proof that anyof these things happened,
or even that they were likely to happen,
it would be different.
But right now, there seemsto be a lot of smoke,
and not much fire.
- Republican senator Jeff Flake
spoke on the Senate floor earlier,
saying that the tone of theevents around the hearing
and the toxic political culture
has been encouraged by both parties.
Do you think this will changeour political cultures?
- Our political cultureis so toxic right now,
it would need huge changefor it to become less so.
What's going to happen isthis stuff will continue,
if Mr. Kavanaugh is actuallydenied the Supreme Court seat
on the basis ofunsubstantiated allegations,
this is going to get worse.
And anyone who's broughtforward by a Democrat
or Republican president is gonna have
a tough time getting confirmed.
- We've heard the talk ofdeath threats on both sides,
Senator Flake says thateven he has been threatened.
What can be done about this?
- I don't know, I wish I had an answer.
I wish somebody did.
We need a lot of God's grace.
We need a change in howpeople think about politics,
and government, and the goodof the people in this country.
Partisanship has just gone insane.
And I don't see a solution looming.
- Any thoughts on what should
happen now going forward?
- Well it seems to me the committee
is doing the right thing,
they've taken the first andapparently most credible accuser
and they're giving her a hearing,
they're not going to havea bunch of old white men
questioning her, they're bringing in
a woman to conduct the hearing,
and get evidence from herand from Judge Kavanaugh,
and they're going to try to see
if there's any substantiation,
if her story holds up,if there's any evidence.
I don't know what they can do other than
give these things an airingand then take a vote.
- As these things unfold,
have you seen anything like this before?
- Well sure, I meanthis is very reminiscent
of Clarence Thomas,
who was nominated for the Court
and was a great concern becausehe had talked about things
like natural law and believing in truth,
and they almost stoppedhim on those grounds,
and then we had AnitaHill at the last minute
come forth with allegationsnot too different from these,
and of course Clarence Thomas
was confirmed to the Supreme Court.
There have been other ugly hearings,
Robert Bork, people whohave, who've been trashed
in the confirmation hearings.
But this seems to betaking it to a new level.
- Yeah, Senator Flake expressed doubt
that there will actuallybe a vote on Friday.
What do you think?
- I'm not a prophet or a son of a prophet,
so we'll have to(Efrem Graham laughing)
wait and see what the committee does.
- [Efrem] As we approachthis, the hours ticking away,
what can we expect to happen
and unfold tomorrow, any ideas?
- Well, I think they're going to
challenge Dr. Ford,
carefully, to see if her story holds up,
I think they're going to question
Judge Kavanaugh intently,
I think at the bottom line there's going
to be no real evidence tosupport that anything happened,
and of course no real way for him
to prove that nothing happened.
So I think the committee at the end
is going to be left withunsubstantiated allegations
unless there's something out there
that we don't know about,
and I have a hunch that willlead to his confirmation.
- So you do think he will be confirmed?
- That's my best guess at this point,
unless something comes upthat hasn't hit the news yet.
- Alright Brad Jacobs RegentUniversity's Law School,
thank you so much for your time.
President Donald Trumpand Israeli Prime Minister
met for the first timesince the US Embassy
moved to Jerusalem.
They are both in New York
for the United Nations General Assembly.
Netanyahu thanked President Trump
for his support of Israel'sright to defend itself
in a dangerous part of the world.
- I think, and I say this objectively,
that the American-Israeli alliance
has never been stronger.
It's stronger than everbefore under your leadership.
And I look forward to working with you,
and your team to advanceour common interests.
Security, prosperity, and peace,
with Israel's neighbors, and for the region.
- [Reporter] Netanyahualso says he appreciated
President Trump's strong words and actions
when it comes to Iran, something President Trump
elaborated on while chairing and speaking
before the UN Security Council.
- After that the United States
will pursue additional sanctions,
tougher than ever before,
to counter the entire rangeIran's malign conduct.
Any individual or entitywho fails to comply
with these sanctions willface severe consequences.
I ask all members of the Security Council
to work with the United States
to ensure the Iranianregime changes its behavior
and never acquires a nuclear bomb.
- President Trump says allthe Iran nuclear deal did
was give Iran much-needed cash
for the nation to continuepromoting terrorism.
Russia reports successfultest of another new weapon,
as Vladimir Putin continuesto build up his military.
It released video of itsnew long-range missile,
which can travel up to 155 miles.
The video shows the missiles hitting
eight strikes on target ships.
The missile can be fired from land or air,
and it's build to destroyships up to 5,000 tons.
The missile can be fired from the surface,
or from Russia's planes.
More than 300 passengers inChina are taking a bold stand
for their faith in Jesus Christ.
They're all signed a statement called
A Declaration of the Christian Faith.
The statement comes afterthe government's regulation
on religious affairs wentinto effect earlier this year.
Now that has encouragedgovernment departments
in charge of religion toclamp down on Christianity,
and on other faiths.
The statement of faithmakes several points,
and it says, "We also willnot accept any 'ban' or 'fine'
"imposed on our churches due to our faith.
"For the sake of the Gospel,
"we are prepared to bear all losses,
"even the loss of ourfreedom and our lives."
Personal stories of the aftermath
of Hurricane Florence continue to unfold.
Like the story of Keith Smith.
Keith is disabled, he lives on his own,
and was completely overwhelmed
when flood waters ravaged his home.
So he did the only thing he knew to do:
he called Operation Blessing for help.
- This whole room wasfilled with memories,
and things that just piled up in life
that you don't know howyou wound up with 'em but,
there's so many things that it's,
you don't really know what you got.
- [Reporter] Just last Friday,
Keith Smith could only describe
his situation as "overwhelming,"
after Hurricane Florence lefthis New Bern, North Carolina
home under three feet of water.
His clean-up dilemma wasespecially complicated
because Keith is disabled,
after a car accident lefthim with limited mobility.
- Not being able to take astep in the right direction,
or fearing that it just won't be enough,
to make a dent in the problem.
That I knew I wouldjust, be wasting my time,
just one person that I'm tryin' to,
tryin' to fulfill the need.
I didn't know how I wasgonna get this accomplished.
(hammer thuds)
- [Reporter] But Keith's solution
was just a phone call away.
- I called OperationBlessing and asked for help
and the good Lord provided.
People that showed up herehave become lifelong friends.
They have given unselfishly, and that's so important to me.
- [Reporter] James Bockem wasone of the Operation Blessing
volunteers that spranginto action for Keith.
- It was a lot of stuff inhere, so I mean you know,
don't underestimate what you see now,
you just see the results of some
good hard cleaning right now.
- [Reporter] James and the OB volunteers
from Without LimitsChurch spent the weekend
gutting Keith's home, gettingit ready for refurbishing.
- Volunteering in a situationlike this is a good thing
for the spirit, the soul, and it's just
giving back to thecommunity that you live in.
- [Reporter] The teammade sure to take time out
to pray for Keith.
- We prayed, and we've had fellowship
all day long here together,
and laughed together, and just,
they've uplifted, they'velifted my spirits up.
- [Reporter] Keith is forever grateful
to the Operation Blessing team
that brought in a lot ofcalm in the midst of a storm.
- These right here are tears of joy,
because I'm so relieved.
My soul is in a better placetoday than it was yesterday.
And I am so grateful to the help
that you guys have given me.
I could never express enough gratitude.
(swooshing)
- [Reporter] Coming up,the unbelievable plight
of widows in China, and one organization
on a biblical mission to help them.
(upbeat music)
- China's one-child policy
is making its 38thanniversary with it this week,
among other moral issues surrounding it
is the plight of widowsand baby girls in China.
Here with more on efforts to help them
is Reggie Littlejohn, withWomen's Rights Without Frontiers.
Reggie, thank you so much for joining us.
First of all, tell us howChina's one-child policy
results in tremendousvictimization of widows.
- Oh, well what happened, basically,
is that there was a populationexplosion under the Mao era,
and then after that theywent down to one child.
It was six children per woman, then went down to one child,
so they've got thisenormous elderly population
that is heading towards retirement,
without the youngpopulation to support it.
And widows are particularly vulnerable,
because they have spendtheir lives raising children,
whereas widowers have,
many of them have the ability to work.
They have no ability to work.
So, approximately 71% ofwidows in the countryside
are dependent on familymembers to support them,
but a lot of them don't havefamily members to support them
because of the one-child policy.
So they are destitute, and committing suicide.
China has the highest female suicide rate
of any country in the world,
and there is a tremendousspike in senior suicide,
because of the desperateeconomic circumstances,
and also abandonment by family members
that seniors in China are suffering
because of the one-child policy.
- Heartbreaking.
What is Women's Rights Without Frontiers
doing to help them?
- Well, we are absolutely unique,
we are the only organization in the world
that has a network on theground, inside of China,
that is saving baby girlsfrom sex-selective abortion,
and we have saved hundreds of baby girls,
and that same network hasfound these desperate widows.
What we do is we go to their door,
and we say "we're here to help you."
And so we give them a monthly stipend.
And, for some of them,it makes the difference
between eating and not eating.
So, for example, there'sone widow, Mrs. Lee,
who's husband died decades ago,
her family is not caring for her,
and some days she only had money,
she had no money, so she couldn'teat anything except salt.
She had bought herself arope to hang herself with
when life got too tough,
and we came to her doorand we're giving her
the Chinese equivalentof about $20 a month,
which makes the difference between
her eating and her not eating.
And these widows are incredibly grateful,
that even though their ownfamily has abandoned them,
that there are people fromthe other side of the world
that are willing to come to them
with desperately needed help.
- Tell us about the efforts of your group
to help save baby girls in China.
- Well, one of the things that is,
one of the unintended consequencesof the one-child policy,
is that because of son preference,
people were, and continue to,selectively abort baby girls.
Even under the two-child policy,
second daughters arestill very vulnerable,
because even if they have the first baby
that's a girl they'll let her live,
but then they're saving thatsecond child slot for a boy.
And girls continue to beselectively aborted and abandoned,
and our network will go to the door
of a woman that we findout is being pressured
by her husband and her in-laws to abort
or abandon her baby because she's a girl,
and we will say congratulationson your daughter,
girls are as good as boys,
and we will give you a monthly stipend
for a year to empower youto keep those daughters.
And that enables her togo to her mother-in-law
and her husband and say, "I can't abort,
"I can't abandon these babies,
"these baby girls, they're lucky girls!
"Look, they're already bringinginto the family money."
And so we are able to usethe culture around luck
to counteract the culturearound son preference,
and we've saved hundredsof baby girls in this way.
- China is facing a lot ofproblems due to this policy.
Do you see the government changing it?
- Oh it is changing it!
Okay, China's movedfrom a one-child policy
to a two-child policy,
although forced abortion still exists
under the two-child policy'cause it remains illegal
to have the baby if you're not pregnant,
or if you're not married, excuse me,
and it remains illegalto have a third child.
But they are desperate forpeople to start having babies,
and because they know they are facing
this demographic disaster,
because right now, 241 million people
are elderly in China.
That's 17.5% of the population.
By the year 2050, thatnumber is going to double,
to 500 million, almosthalf a billion people,
which is 35% percent oftheir entire population.
So they don't know whatthey're gonna do about this.
They don't have social security,
and I really fear for these seniors.
And that's why we have beenreaching out so strongly
to these elderly widows,to keep them from falling
through the cracks and killing themselves.
- Hm.
We applaud your work andwe are praying as well.
Thank you so much ReggieLittlejohn, we appreciate you.
- Thank you very much.
(swooshing)
- [Reporter] And still ahead,
navigating everything outthere about gender identity
and a biblical approachwhere Christians can help.
(upbeat music)
(upbeat music)
- Transgender, genderidentity, gender dysphoria,
those are words we arehearing more these days
as the LGBTQ community pushesto promote its lifestyles.
Pastor Richard Ellis ofReunion Church in Dallas
is here with us now todiscuss several issues
in the headlines surroundinggender identities these days.
So Pastor, you say you haveseen many of your church members
struggling with gender identity,
is it a larger problemthan most Christians
may understand today?
- Yeah, thanks for having me today.
I think that it's waymore detailed and specific
than most people are willing to get into,
and I think you canthrow the Romans I verse
at anybody and say, youknow, Romans Chapter I,
that they're just kindagoing down the drain,
and homosexuality, but thisis way bigger than just that,
you have intersex people who,
and I have dealt with this personally,
you know a child is born with,
you know are they male, female,
you can't really tell by the body parts,
and parents literally havethis horrendous decision
of saying "okay, which way do we go?"
And they pick male or female,
and I've gone through this entire process
with a person who wasdesignated female at birth
but turned out that thatwas not the right choice,
pretty quick,
and had to have, you know,to not get too specific here,
but had to have maleorgan literally built.
And these are, these are Christian people,
ended up marrying, having, adopting children, so,
I would say, you know,
we rush to judgment sometimes,
clearly the bible speaksclearly about homosexuality
but even the people that cometo me from that lifestyle,
I try to speak the truth and love to them,
and find out where theyare and go from there.
- New York City has a bill out there now
that would allow people who don't identify
as male or female to check anX on their birth certificate.
Is this legitimizing whatreally is a mental disorder?
- Well, I, you know the scripture says
that God is not the author of confusion.
And there's a lot ofconfusion in the world.
And when you, when you takeall the boundaries off,
what kids are seeing on the internet,
and they go try to, youknow, do these things,
or think that's normaland no one's telling them
there's any absolutes, there's no right or wrong,
you know "I kissed a Girl and I liked it"
so some girl does that,
well she's certainly gonna feel something,
but does that mean that's who you are,
then you end up well, "I'mnot a male, I'm not a female,
"what am I, I'm gonna put an X,"
I think it's a fraction of the population,
if someone genuinely is in a situation
where if you looked at them biologically,
and their sex and gender being
two separate things for some people,
they really don't know what to check off,
and so you say well "that's crazy,"
it's only crazy until it's not your issue.
And I think as we engagethe world with the Gospel,
that Jesus Christ died on the cross
bearing grace from the dead,
we have to see where theyare, and move to that,
and then let the HolySpirit once he's inside them
change their heart, changetheir mind, change their life.
- In the United Kingdom, the government there
is investigating why there's been
more than 4000% increasein children seeking
to transition to the opposite sex.
What's the issue here for children
to make this type of decision?
Are they even mature enough to understand
all the consequences of the action?
- Yeah, I would say no.
This, children are developing,
their minds are still developing,
they're feeling things,they're angry, they're happy,
they're experimenting, andto make such a life-changing,
I mean physically changing your body
literally to say "I was born female,
"I'm gonna be a male now," or"male, I'm gonna be a female,"
and I have personally, youknow engaged with these people
who have made these decisions.
It's very intense andit is not for a child
to be making these decisions.
- Pastor, bottom line for us,
what does God say about gender identity
and what can we as hispeople promote that message?
- Well, I mean, you go back to Genesis
and it says he created a male and female,
but even Jesus referenced eunuchs,
someone you know can be born that way,
make a choice to be that way, you know,
it's in the scripture that people
can be born a certain way,'cause it's a fallen world,
but my ideal is if someonecomes to me and says,
for instance, "I'm gay, I'm a homosexual,"
I say, you know they say"I was born that way,"
I say "okay, I'll yield onthat, you were born that way.
"What I'd like to talk toyou about is a second birth."
Where Jesus takes residencein that human being
from the inside out, begins to transform them,
and give them the power,
if it's a dysfunction ofsome kind, to deal with that,
if it's a sin to overcome that,
but I think we're way tooquick to throw people,
they are people, under the bus
instead of speaking truth and love
and trying to help them getfrom point A to point B,
or point A to point J,which would be Jesus,
and see their life changefrom the inside out.
- Pastor Richard Ellis, thankyou so much for your time.
- You bet.
- Stay with us, we'll be right back.
(gentle upbeat music)
- President Trump wasn't the only one
taking center stage atthe United Nations today.
First Lady Melania Trump spokeat the US Mission to the UN.
She said USAID's motto is"'From the American people.'
"I am so proud of thework this administration
"is doing through USAID and others."
