[PEOPLE TALKING]

[SOUND OF BUILDING CRASHING]

ESTEBAN CASTRO: Within 12 hours after the earthquake,

the number of deaths in Mexico reached 139

in Mexico City, Puebla, and Morales.

In the community of La Condesa, more than 400 volunteers

carry debris to help the emergency teams rescue.

Trapped beneath the rubble of an apartment building,

every little noise kept hope alive that survivors

would be found.

It's a race against time.

This woman arrived within moments after the earthquake

to make sure her neighbors were fine.

She didn't get good news.

WOMAN: [SPEAKING SPANISH]

INTERPRETER: When I heard the building collapse,

I came to see how I could help.

At least 20 families live there.

No effort is too small.

Sandwiches, water, every little help is welcome in a place

where the smell of gas reminds the people

of the danger they face.

Although her own home was damaged,

this young girl came to help others.

GIRL: [SPEAKING SPANISH]

INTERPRETER: I came because I would like someone

to do it for me.

CBN humanitarian and disaster relief

responded immediately, sending $20,000 to Mexico

to help with the most urgent needs of the population.

Much more help will be needed in the days ahead.

In the meantime, the tedious search for survivors

will continue, and people worldwide

will be praying for miracles.

For CBN News, Esteban Castro, Mexico City.
