"13 Reasons Why" is a popular
but controversial TV series
on Netflix.
The show is about a
teen ending her life
and new numbers show
it may have triggered
a surge in online
searches for suicide,
including how to do it.
Researchers found that
for almost three weeks
after the show's release,
there were at least 900,000
more than expected Google
searches including the word
suicide.
That's a 19% increase
based on forecasts
using historical search trends.
Joining me now to weigh in
on the impact of the show
is "Movie Guide's"
Evy Baehr-Carroll.
Evy, thanks for
being with us today.
Thank you so
much for having me.
First of all, do you think
these findings and this study
will encourage Netflix
to change its content?
Well, we certainly hope so.
There's been so
many articles on it.
If you just Google it,
there's tons of stuff.
It's the talk of the town.
Experts all over-- you know,
we have our own studies on it,
how teenagers are
susceptible specifically
in the teenage years.
And that's what the
show's all about.
So we're hoping-- in the past
we have gotten other shows to be
canceled from huge studios, NBC,
they have a show called "The
Playboy Club," they had another
show called "The Good Christian
B's"--
you know, I can't say
the whole name on CBN,
or wouldn't want to.
But we've gotten
those shows canceled.
And the way that you do it--
the studios will never want to
say they'll cancel it before.
The way we do it, though,
is our CBN audiences,
our "Movie Guide" audiences,
you know, tell your friends, you
yourself don't watch the show,
don't promote it in any way.
Look at the research
on why it's so harmful
and just don't watch it.
They won't produce this content
if people aren't watching it.
Well, do you think that
there will be a season
two of "13 Reasons Why?"
Well, actually, it's
already in the works.
You know, one of the
producers is Selena Gomez.
The book series was popular.
It's actually
already in the works
but they can always pull things.
If we're adamant about
it, if we're really
getting out there and
making note not to watch it,
then they could always pull it.
And there is a lot of
traction on Twitter
and social media about the
show but recently, it's all
been the negative side effects.
So hopefully they'll be able
to pull it, but, like I said,
it is already in the works.
Well Evy, what
conversations should parents
have with their
children about the show?
Yeah, well, at
"Movie Guide" we always
say talk to your teenagers,
your children about media,
talk about it, analyze
it, help them to analyze
the content for themselves.
For this particular show,
we're not saying watch it,
we don't really want
people to watch it,
like I've been saying.
But it's good to talk about
the repercussions of suicide.
You know, what's
been in the news
lately is the Lincoln Park
the lead singer who died
and, you know, he
had six children.
It's good to talk about what
happened with the family.
Suicide is very sad
to the entire family
and the repercussions
are extremely serious.
So with children or
teenagers, you've
really got to show them that.
You can't just say, oh,
don't watch something,
oh, don't listen to it.
But really tell them why,
the reasoning behind why
we shouldn't support something.
Absolutely.
