MEL GIBSON: The King of Cool.
He was so cool, man.
But, he probably felt that
there was something missing,
and he felt at
the end of it all,
maybe I'm a little empty,
so what is it I'm missing?
BARBARA MINTY MCQUEEN: There's
always a little something
that was off.
He was looking
for so much, and I
think he'd been looking for
so much for his whole life.
No matter how big you get
or Academy Awards or anything,
there's still something missing.
STAN BARRETT: He could steal
a scene just by being in it,
but there comes a point
where there's an emptiness.
I said I'm going to leave
you a couple of books.
You better think about it.
BARBARA LEIGH: He found
another love, which was flying.
LEONARD DEWITT: And then he
bought an antique airplane
and had it restored.
He was given the name of Sammy
Mason, who was a stunt pilot,
very well-respected man.
PETE MASON: Steve saw
in my dad something
that I just took for granted.
LEONARD DEWITT: Sammy
was so solid spiritually.
I knew when I heard that Steve
was taking flying lessons
that he would be intrigued.
BARBARA MINTY MCQUEEN:
I've never seen him really
respect somebody so much.
LEONARD DEWITT: They just
became solid friends.
And he recognized in
him a spirit of peace.
BARBARA MINTY MCQUEEN: I think
Sammy was maybe the father
that Steve always wanted.
MARSHALL TERRILL:
It wasn't Sammy
asking Steve to
come to church, it
was Steve asking Sammy if he
could come to church with him.
BARBARA MINTY MCQUEEN:
Every Sunday, we
went to church, which I think
that was just Steve's way.
He wanted to make sure that he
had all his questions answered.
LEONARD DEWITT: I said each
one of us is different,
but God has a tailor-made
plan for each of us.
And he grinned.
He said, "You want to know if
I'm born again, don't you?"
And so then he said, "Remember
the Sunday that you invited
people who wanted
to receive Christ?"
"When you gave that
invitation," he said,
"that's when I accepted Christ."

Somebody had a
final plan for Steve.
It sort of all clicked.
And I think that was sort of the
perfect place for Steve to be,
up in the air, in the
clouds, feeling close to God,
hearing about God, and I think
that changed Steve McQueen's
life.
BARBARA MINTY
MCQUEEN: He loved it.
Steve loved it.
I think when you're
up there, your mind
just has to go to places
that are spiritual.
I mean, he was talking to
God when he was in the sky.
God was looking at him, and
he gave him a second chance.

MEL GIBSON: We're all designed
with a desire for happiness.
And it's so ingrained in us,
that that aspect of our nature
tells me that there is a
place where that can happen.

BARBARA MINTY
MCQUEEN: He finally
found something he
could trust, completely.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
He found peace.
