George: HELLO,
EVERYONE, WELCOME TO THIS
SPECIAL EDITION OF CBN
NEWS.
I'M GEORGE THOMAS
REPORTING FROM NAIROBI,
KENYA.
AS ISIS CONTINUES TO GRAB
THE INTERNATIONAL
SPOTLIGHT, AFRICAN TERROR
GROUPS LIKE al-SHABAAB
CAUSE DEATH AND
DESTRUCTION.
IN NIGERIA, NEARLY ONE
MILLION PEOPLE HAVE BEEN
DISPLACED, AND THOUSANDS
KILLED, RAPED, OR
KIDNAPPED BY BOKO HARAM.
THOSE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO
SURVIVE IT TESTIFY TO
UNSPEAKABLE HORRORS.
WITH EVERY KIDNAPPING OR
ATTACK, THIS YOUNG
NIGERIAN RELIVES THE
NIGHTMARE OF WEEKS SPENT
UNDER BOKO HARAM'S
CONTROL.
WE ASKED THEM
REPEATEDLY WHY THEY'RE
DOING WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
THEY TOLD US IT IS AN
ALL-OUT BATTLE AGAINST
CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS.
George: STEVEN
WITNESSED THE SHEAR
BRUTALITY OF AFRICA'S
TERRORIST GROUP.
IT HAPPENED IN WARZA.
HUNDREDS OF ISLAMIC
FIGHTERS STORMED STEVEN'S
TOWN.
IT WAS
WELL-COORDINATED.
THEY ATTACKED IN HUGE
NUMBERS, GOING FROM HOUSE
TO HOUSE, STEALING,
DESTROYING, AND THEN
CAPTURING MEN, WOMEN, AND
CHILDREN.
George: THIS IS VIDEO
OF THE ASSAULT PUT ON
YouTube BY BOKO HARAM.
Reporter: THEY
ATTACKED WARZA BECAUSE IT
IS A PREDOMINANTLY A
CHRISTIAN TIME.
George: SEVERAL
HUNDRED PEOPLE WERE
KILLED, INCLUDING MEMBERS
OF STEVEN'S FAMILY.
I SAW THEM KILL MY
FATHER AND BROTHER.
AFTER THE KILLINGS, THEY
TOOK 11 OF US HOSTAGE.
George: STEVEN WAS
HELD BY BOKO HARAM FOR
MONTHS, AND SAYS HE SAW
THEIR BRUTALITY UP CLOSE.
WE WATCHED THEM CARRY
OUT THEIR EVIL ATROCITIES
FROM ONE TOWN TO ANOTHER.
EACH TIME THEY WENT ON AN
OPERATION, THEY WOULD
USUALLY CHANT "ALLAHU
AKBAR", AND THIS STER FIDE
US.
TERRIFIED
US.
THEY ASKED US IF WE
WANTED TO BE BEHEADED OR
SHOT IN THE HEAD.
I TOLD THEM I WOULD RATHER
BE SHOT, AND THEY SAID,
NO, THEY WOULD RATHER
SLAUGHTER ME.
George: THEY WERE
INTERCEPTED BY BOKO HARAM
FIGHTERS WHILE TRYING TO
ESCAPE.
THEY STOPPED OUR CAR
AND ORDERED US TO CONVERT
TO ISLAM.
THEN THEY SHOT MY SIBLING
BEHIND ME.
MY HUSBAND WAS ORDERED TO
LEAVE.
HE FLED INTO THE BUSH AND
THEN THEY TOLD ME TO GET
INTO THEIR CAR.
George: ELIZABETH WAS
TAKEN TO A NEARBY TOWN AND
AGAIN ASKED TO CONVERT TO
ISLAM.
AGAIN SHE REFUSED.
I STOOD MY GROUND, AND
EACH TIME I REFUSED, THEY
PUT A KNIFE TO MY NECK AND
THREATENED TO CUT MY HEAD
OFF.
George: AFTER SEVERAL
MORE MONTHS OF
CAPTIVITYVITY, STEVECAPTIVITY,STEVEN AND E
LIZABETH
MIRACULOUSLY MANAGED TO
ESCAPE AND ARE LIVING
HERE, OUTSIDE THE CAPITAL
CITY.
NEXT WE TURN TO SOUTH
SUDAN.
50,000 PEOPLE HAVE DIED,
AND MORE THAN TWO MILLION
PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DISPLACED
FROM ETHNIC VIOLENCE
GRIPPING THIS FRAGILE
NATION.
NOW ONE AMERICAN FAMILY IS
RISKING DEATH TO REBUILD
THE WAR POR WAR-TORN COUNTRY, ONE
VILLAGE AND PERSON AT A
TIME.
George: WILLIAM WAS
11 YEARS OLD WHEN SOLDIERS
CONFRONTED HIM ABOUT HIS
FAITH.
I WAS ASKED TO LEAVE MY
CHRISTIANITY AND TAKE GUNS
AND FIGHT LIKE THIS.
I SAY NO WAY.
MUHAMMAD DIDN'T DIE FOR
ME, JESUS DID.
George: HE WAS THROWN
IN PRISON AND TORTURED,
YET NEVER LOST HOPE.
BECAUSE I KNEW GOD WAS
WITH ME.
George: JUST AS
REFUGEES FLEE THE MIDDLE
EAST TODAY, LEVY, TOO,
LEFT HIS HOMELAND IN 1985,
FINDING ASYLUM AND A NEW
LIFE IN AMERICA.
BUT HIS ESCAPE FROM THE
CLUTCHES OF JIHAD WAS ONLY
THE BEGINNING OF AN
ODYSSEY THAT EVENTUALLY
BROUGHT HIM, HIS AMERICAN
WIFE AND CHILDREN, BACK TO
HIS WAR-TORN NATION.
ON OUR WEDDING DAY, WE
WRITE A SCRIPT AND WE SAY,
YOUR PEOPLE WILL BE MY
PEOPLE.
WHERE YOU GO, I WILL GO.
AND WHERE YOU DIE, I WILL
DIE.
George: THAT WAS 14
YEARS AGO.
SINCE THEN...IS THIS AN
ADVENTURE?
ACTUALLY, WE'RE RIGHT
IN THE MIDDLE OF BASICALLY
A BUSH.
[SPEAKING A FOREIGN
LANGUAGE]
I THINK I SAW A BABY
ONE IN THE BATHROOM.
WHERE?
IN YOUR BATHROOM?
WHAT?
IT IS DEFINITELY ON THE
EDGE OF THE JUNGLE.
WE FEEL LIKE WE'RE ALWAYS
PUSHING BACK THE JUNGLE.
George: WITH HIS SIX
CHILDREN IN HAND...
EVEN RIGHT NOW WE'RE IN
THE MIDDLE OF A WAR.
George: ...65,000
MILES AWAY, LEVY'S HOME IS
A PARCEL OF LAND IN A
REMOTE VILLAGE OF SOUTH
SUDAN.
> WHY DO YOU COME HERE?
SO I CAN HELP MY
PARENTS.
George: AND WHY DO
YOUR PARENTS COME HERE?
BECAUSE THEY COME HERE
TO HELP PEOPLE THAT ARE
SICK.
George: IN BETWEEN
HOME-SCHOOLING AND RAISING
THEIR CHILDREN, THE LEVYS
RUN "OPERATION NEHEMIAH,"
A CHRISTIAN ORGANIZATION
HELPING SOUTH SUDAN
REBUILD FROM THE ASHES OF
WAR.
WE BELIEVE THAT CHRIST
IS WORTHY OF THE WORSHIP
OF SOUTH SUDAN.
George: ONE OF THE
FIRST THINGS THEY DID WHEN
THEY MOVED HERE WAS TO
START A CHURCH.
MIND YOU, THERE WASN'T A
SOUL IN AT LEAST A FIVE,
10-MILE RADIUS.
THIS ENTIRE AREA WAS
LITERALLY THE BUSH.
ALL THESE YEARS LATER,
MORE THAN 10,000 FOLKS
HAVE MOVED INTO THE
COMMUNITY.
MANY OF THEM HEARING THE
GOSPEL FOR THE VERY FIRST
TIME.
LEVY'S ELDEST BROTHER
PASTORS THE CHURCH.
BEFORE THE CONGREGATION
WAS ESTABLISHED, THERE WAS
A LOT OF FIGHTING.
PEOPLE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT
GOD OR THE IMPORTANCE OF
FORGIVING ONE ANOTHER.
George: THEY RUN A
BRICK-MAKING FACTORY AND
OTHER NUMEROUS BUSINESSES
IN ORDER TO REBUILD THE
ECONOMY.
THE BIBLE SAYS, YOU ARE
WELCOME AND YOU CAN EAT.
THE PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO
BELIEVE IT FOR THEMSELVES.
George: LEVY'S GOAL:
REBUILD SOUTH SUDAN ONE
FAMILY AND ONE VILLAGE AT
A TIME.
TO GIVE YOU THE SENSE OF
THE MAGNITUDE OF
CHALLENGES FACING THE LEVY
FAMILY, YOU JUST HAVE TO
TAKE A RIDE DOWN THIS
ROAD.
ACTUALLY, IT IS NOT EVEN A
ROAD.
IT IS A DIRT PATHWAY, FIVE
MILES BACK IN THAT
DIRECTION IS THE
HEADQUARTERS OF OPERATION
NEHEMIAH.
IN THIS DIRECTION IS THE
LEVY HOUSE.
THEY HAVE LITERALLY BUILT
THEIR HOME IN THE MIDDLE
OF THE BUSH.
AND GETTING THERE INVOLVES
A BONE-JARRING RIDE.
TO A SMALL HOUSE AT THE
FOOT OF A MOUNTAIN RANGE.
IN BETWEEN CHORES, SCHOOL,
BIBE STUDIES AND CHURCH
ACTIVITIES, THE LEVYS GROW
ALL KINDS OF FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES.
THEY VIEW THE FARM AS A
POTPROTOTYPE THAT WILL
PROVIDE A SOLUTION FOR THE
COUNTRY'S FOOD
INSECURITIES.
FOR YEARS THEY HAVE
DEPENDED ON HANDOUTS FROM
THE U.S.
NOW GOD HAS GIVEN US A
LAND AND A COUNTRY.
WE WANTED TO SEE THAT WE
ARE ABLE TO PRODUCE FOOD
FROM HERE, AND GIVE BACK
TO THOSE WHO HAVE GIVEN TO
US WHEN WE ARE ON
DIFFICULT TIMES.
George: LEVY ADMITS
THE NEWS COMING OUT OF
SOUTH SUDAN IS BLEAK.
PARTS OF THE COUNTRY ARE
FACING FAMINE CONDITIONS.
MORE THAN A MILLION PEOPLE
HAVE FLED TO NEIGHBORING
COUNTRIES.
AND THE ONGOING VIOLENCE
THREATENS TO TEAR APART OF
THIS NATION.
STILL, THE LEVYS WILL NOT
GIVE UP.
SOUTH SUDAN IS NOT A
LOST CAUSE.
THERE IS A GREAT
OPPORTUNITY FOR THE GOSPEL
TO GO FORWARD AND
INFLUENCE CULTURE.
AND WHEN WE HAVE A
STRONG CHURCH, THEN THE
COMMUNITY AROUND WILL BE
STRONG, AND THAT
TRANSLATES TO A STRONG
COUNTRY.
George: UGANDA HAS
ONE OF THE LARGEST AIDS
POPULATIONS IN AFRICA KA.
AFRICA.
LYDIA IS ONE OF THEM.
SHE WAS A TEENAGER WHEN
HER FATHER AND STEPFATHER
DIED OF AIDS.
GRIEF-STRICKEN AND
PARENTLESS, SHE BEGAN A
JOURNEY OF HEALING, THAT
EVENTUALLY LED HER TO
REACH OUT TO PEOPLE
SUFFERING WITH AIDS.
THE SOUNDS OF LAKE
VICTORIA, AFRICA'S LARGEST
LAKE.
NESTLED ON ITS NORTHERN
SHORES IS THE UGANDAN CITY
OF IN TEPI INTEPI, THIS IS HOME
FOR LYDIA.
HER FATHER WAS A
WELL-KNOWN CHRISTIAN
LEADER IN UGANDA, BUT HE
HAD BEEN LIVING A DOUBLE
LIFE.
> WHEN YOU WERE 17 YEARS
OLD, SOMETHING THAT IN
SOME WAYS PERHAPS CHANGED
YOUR LIFE, TURNED YOUR
LIFE UPSIDE DOWN.
YEAH.
HE DIED OF AIDS.
HE DIED OF AIDS AFTER A
LONG ILLNESS.
George: DO YOU KNOW
HOW HE GOT AIDS?
YES.
HE HAD AN AFFAIR.
George: BUT NO ONE
KNEW HE WAS DYING OF AIDS.
HE HAD KEPT IT A SECRET.
DID YOU FEEL ANGRY?
YEAH, I WAS ANGRY.
George: ANGRY AT GOD,
ANGRY AT YOUR FATHER?
MY FATHER AND GOD AND
EVERYTHING.
I LOOKED AT HIM AS SOMEONE
WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN A
PERFECT PERSON BECAUSE HE
GAVE ME A PERFECT PICTURE
OF WHO HE WAS.
George: HER MOTHER
ALSO DIED OF AIDS.
I ASKED GOD WHY THIS
HAD TO HAPPEN, YOU KNOW?
George: BUT LYDIA WAS
NOT ALONE.
AN ESTIMATED 1.2 MILLION
CHILDREN IN UGANDA HAVE
LOST ONE OR BOTH PARENTS
TO AIDS.
A CLOSE FAMILY FRIEND
DECIDED TO FOSTER LYDIA.
HE PASTORS ONE OF THE
LARGEST EVANGELICAL
CHURCHES IN INTEPI.
HE AND HIS WIFE MADE A
COMMITMENT TO LOVE AND
CARE FOR LYDIA.
AN ACT OF KINDNESS THAT
LYDIA SAYS STARTERED HER
OSTARTED HER ONA JOURNEY OF HEALING AND
RESTORATION.
SHE SPENT THE NEXT SEVERAL
YEARS ALLOWING THE
SCRIPTURES TO SPEAK INTO
HER BROKEN LIFE.
SHE SOON DISCOVERED THAT
LIKE HER FATHER, SHE, TOO,
WAS A SINNER, SAVED BY THE
GRACE OF GOD.
I STARTED LOOKING AT MY
FATHER IN A VERY DIFFERENT
WAY.
IF HE WAS AROUND, I WOULD
TELL HIM I'M VERY SORRY.
George: DO YOU STILL
CARRY THAT UNFORGIVENESS?
OH, NO.
George: THAT
BITTERNESS?
NO.
George: THAT ANGER?
NO.
George: WHAT
HAPPENED?
FORGIVENESS BEGAN TO
GROW BECAUSE I REALIZE I'M
NOT ANY DIFFERENT FROM
HIM.
I'M A SINNER AND I NEED
CHRIST JUST LIKE HE NEEDED
HIM.
George: SOON AFTER
FINISHING UNIVERSITY,
LYDIA JOINED ONE OF THE
LARGEST BIBLE TRANSLATION
GROUPS IN THE WORLD.
WITH THE BLESSING OF HER
FOSTER PARENTS AND CHURCH,
SHE BECAME THE FIRST
UGANDAN MISSIONARY.
I'M SAVED AND I KNOW
HIS LOVE.
WE HAVE TO PASS ON THE
MESSAGE HE HAS GIVEN US TO
OTHER PEOPLE.
George: SO NOW SHE
TRAVELS AROUND HER
COUNTRY, HELPING TO
TRANSLATE THE WORD OF GOD
INTO NATIVE LANGUAGES, AND
MINISTERING HOPE TO PEOPLE
LIVING WITH AIDS.
17 YEARS AFTER LOSING HER
PARENTS TO THE DISEASE,
LYDIA NOW FOCUSES ON
PROMOTING HOPE IN JESUS
CHRIST TO THOSE LIVING
WITH AND AFFECTED BY
H.I.V. AIDS.
EVEN THROUGH THOSE
EXPERIENCES, THEY HAVE
HOPE EVEN WHEN THEY ARE
DIMINISHING PHYSICALLY.
THEY KNOW ONE DAY THEY
WILL MEET HIM.
THEY'LL MEET JESUS AND HIS
LOVE FOR US.
George: WHILE THE
WORLD FOCUSES ON THE
TIDALWAVE OF ARAB REFUGEES
FLEEING THE MIDDLE EAST, A
SIMILAR PLIGHT HERE IN
AFRICA IS BASICALLY BEING
IGNORED.
IT IS HOME TO A QUARTER OF
THE WORLD'S REPLACED WITH
MOST LIVING NEAR THE
BORDER OF KENYA AND
SOMALIA.
AND NOW THERE IS EVEN TALK
OF TRYING TO CLOSE THIS
CAMP BECAUSE OF THE THREAT
OF ISLAMIC TERRORISM.
HERE IS MORE ON WHAT IS
BEING CALLED THE LARGEST
REFUGEE CAMP IN THE WORLD.
GETTING CLEARANCE TO VISIT
THE CAMP IS NOT EASY.
AFTER WEEKS OF WAITING,
THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT GAVE
CBN NEWS THE GREEN LIGHT
TO LAND ON A DIRT AIR
STRIP IN THE MIDDLE OF A
PARCHED AND BARREN DESERT.
270 MILES NORTHEAST OF
KENYA'S CAPITAL CITY,
NAIROBI.
YOU LAND THERE, AND YOU
GET IN A CAR, AND YOU
START DRIVING ON A DUSTY
ROAD.
THERE IS NO TARMAC ROAD.
SOME MOUNTAINS ARE OFF IN
THE DISTANCE.
YOU'RE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE
OF A DESERT WITH NOTHING,
PURELY NOTHING.
George: WELCOME TO
DADOB, THE WORLD'S LARGEST
REFUGEE CAMP.
THE THEY LIVE IN THESE
CAMPS -- HAVE ARE
MAKESHIFT CAMPS.
George: THE CLIMATE
IS BRUTAL.
HOT ALL YEAR WITH HARDLY A
DROP OF RAIN.
AMERICAN AID WORKER,
CHRISTOPHER HOFFMAN, WORKS
IN DADOB.
THE FOOD AND THE
HOSPITALIZATION, THE
MEDICAL CARE, THE WATER,
THE TOILETS -- EVERYTHING
IS PROVIDED TO YOU.
George: IBRAHIM WAS
20 YEARS OLD WHEN WAR
DISRUPTED LIFE AS HE KNEW
IT.
WE WERE FORCED TO FLEE
SOMALIA, ACROSS THE BORDER
INTO KENYA, AND THIS IS
WHERE WE ENDED UP.
George: HE HOPED HIS
STAY HERE WOULD BE
SHORT-LIVED, A TEMPORARY
PLACE TO WAIT OUT THE
VIOLENCE.
THAT NEVER HAPPENED.
NOW, 25 YEARS LATER, WITH
17 CHILDREN, FOUR
GRANDCHILDREN, AND TWO
GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN,
IBRAHIM, LIKE SO MANY
OTHERS HERE, HAS WITNESSED
MULTIPLE GENERATIONS OF
FAMILIES GROWING UP IN
DADOB.
WHEN THE CAMP OPENED IN
1992, IT WAS ONLY SUPPOSED
TO HOLD ABOUT 20,000
PEOPLE.
NOW, TODAY, MORE THAN
340,000 REFUGEES CALL THIS
PLACE HOME.
THE MAJORITY OF THEM
SOMALIS, FLEEING CIVIL
WAR.
THEY'VE LOST THEIR
HOMES.
THEY'VE LOST THEIR
FAMILIES AND THEIR
COMMUNITIES.
George: TERESA IS
WITH A U.N. AGENCY THAT
OVERSEES OPERATIONS HERE.
HER GROUP AND PARTNERSHIP
WITH OTHER AID AGENCIES
PROVIDES REFUGEES WITH
FOOD, WATER, HEALTH CARE,
AND EDUCATION.
FOR ALL OF THE
DIFFICULTIES, SHE SAYS --
THIS IS THE SAFEST
PLACE THAT THE REFUGEES
CAN GO TO, AND THE PLACE
THAT THEY NOW CALL HOME.
George: BUT THAT'S
ABOUT TO CHANGE.
THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT
WANTS TO CLOSE THE CAMP
AND SEND SOMALI REFUGEES,
LIKE MUHAMMAD, WHO RUNS AN
ICE-MAKING FACTORY IN THE
CAMP, BACK TO THEIR
WAR-TORN HOMELAND.
HE IS NERVOUS ABOUT
RETURNING.
IT IS STILL IN THE MIDDLE
OF AN ISLAMIC INSURGENCY.
NOTHING HAS CHANGED
THERE.
IT IS STILL A DANGEROUS
PLACE.
George: AUTHORITIES
WANT TO SHUT THE PLACE
DOWN BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE
IT IS A CENTER FOR
RECRUITING ISLAMIC
TERRORISTS.
THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT
HAS EXPRESSED CONCERNS
ABOUT SECURITY MOSTLY,
TERRORISM, FOLLOWING
VARIOUS ATTACKS IN THE
COUNTRY.
George: FOR NOW,
IBRAHIM TRIES TO GIVE HIS
FAMILY HOPE, BUT KNOWS THE
FUTURE AHEAD IS UNCERTAIN.
I'M THANKFUL THAT KENYA
HAS HOSTEDOUS FO HOSTED US FOR THE LAST
25 YEARS.
BUT IT IS GOING TO BE A
BIG MISTAKE TO RETURN US
TO A WAR ZONE.
IT IS LIKE THROWING PEOPLE
INTO A FIRE.
George: AND FINALLY
TODAY WE TRAVEL TO THE
TINY AFRICAN NATION OF
BURUNDI.
IT IS POOR, HUNGRY, AND
RECENTLY DECLARED THE
WORLD'S UNHAPPIEST
COUNTRY.
NOW THERE IS HOPE AS A
WEALTHY JEWISH FILL
PHILANTHROPIST AND
CHRISTIAN DOCTORS WORK TO
HELP SOME OF THE NATION'S
MOST VULNERABLE.
IT IS EASY TO MISS ON A
MAP.
ROUGHLY THE SIZE OF
MARYLAND, BURUNDI IS ONE
OF AFRICA'S SMALLEST
COUNTRIES.
IT USED TO BE THE THIRD
POOREST COUNTRY IN THE
WORLD, AND NOW IT IS
NUMBER ONE.
IN 2013, AMERICAN JASON
FADER MOVED HIS WIFE AND
HIS TWO KIDS TO BURUNDI TO
SERVE AS A DOCTOR THERE.
BETWEEN HERE AND THERE,
THE MAJORITY, ALL EXCEPT
FOR ME, OF THE SURGEONS IN
BURUNDI, WORK IN THE
CAPITAL CITY.
George: AND FOR A
POPULATION OF 10 MILLION
PEOPLE, THERE ARE ONLY 13
SURGEONS, WITH FADER
BECOMING NUMBER 14.
ON A TYPICAL DAY, HOW MANY
SURGERIES ARE YOU DOING?
THEY SCHEDULE ONE OR
TWO, AND YOU END UP DOING
10.
George: LIKE MANY
OTHER MISSIONARIES HERE,
HE RAISES HIS OWN SUPPORT.
IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT
TO FIND A PLACE IN THE
U.S. WHERE I COULD HAVE
EVEN A SMIDGEON OF THE
IMPACT THAT ONE SURGEON
CAN HAVE HERE IN THE
MIDDLE OF AFRICA.
THERE ARE TWO MILLION
PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT HAVE
NO SURGEON, AND I'M HAPPY
TO BE HERE TO HELP CARE
FOR THEM.
George: HALF OF
BURUNDI HAS NO ACCESS TO
PORTABLE WATER.
SOME 70% OF THE NATION
LIVES BELOW THE POVERTY
LINE.
THERE IS NO HEALTH CARE TO
SPEAK OF.
SO AS YOU CAN IMAGINE,
THIS SMALL CHRISTIAN
HOSPITAL HERE IN A REMOTE
CORNER OF BURUNDI ACTS AS
A LIFELINE TO TENS OF
THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE.
RACHEL AND ERIC, ALYSSA
AND JOHN AND JESSICA
JOINED THE FADERS IN
BURUNDI AS MESSAGENARY MISSIONARY
DOCTORS.
[SPEAKING A FOREIGN
LANGUAGE]
George: JOHN IS ONE
OF ONLY THREE
OPHTHALMOLOGISTS HERE.
THE WORK WE DO IS
STRESSFUL.
THERE ARE CROSS-CULTURE
CONFLICTS GOING ON,
LIMITED RESOURCES.
DURING DRY SEASONS, WE
COULD HAVE AS LITTLE AS
TWO HOURS, OR EVEN
SOMETIMES NO POWER, DURING
THE DAY.
LORD, GOD, I THANK YOU
FOR THIS CHANCE TO BE HERE
TODAY.
I PRAY YOU WOULD BE WITH
THIS WOMAN AND HER BABY.
I PRAY FOR A PEACEFUL
DELIVERY.
IN YOUR NAME WE PRAY.
AMEN.
George: LIS LISA IS JUST
ONE OF 20 OB/GYNs.
THESE DOCTORS ARE
COMPELLED TO SERVE IN LESS
THAN IDEAL CONDITIONS.
GOD HAS CALLED US TO
THIS PLACE.
HE HAS CALLED US TO HARD
WORK, BUT HE HAS CALLED US
TO GOOD WORK.
AND I THINK WE CAN SEE HIS
REDEEMING STORY WHEN WE
HAVE THE EYES TO LOOK FOR
IT.
*
George: IN ADDITION
TO MEETING THE PHYSICAL
NEEDS, THEY HAVE TRAINED A
NEW GENERATION TO SERVE
HERE.
WE THOUGHT THE
OPPORTUNITY WAS GREAT TO
COME HERE TO BURUNDI TO
TRAIN MEDICAL STUDENTS, IN
ORDER TO BE PHYSICIANS WHO
CAN CARE COMPASSIONATELY
FOR THEIR PEOPLE IN JESUS'
NAME AND PROVIDE EXCELLENT
HEALTH CARE.
George: THOUSANDS OF
MILES FROM THE HOSPITAL,
ALL THE WAY IN DOWNTOWN
NEW YORK CITY, MARK
GERSEN, A JEWISH
BUSINESSMAN, HAS DECIDED
TO PERSONALLY GET INVOLVED
IN HELPING THESE CHRISTIAN
MEDICAL MISSIONARIES
CHANGE THE DESTINIES OF
SOME OF AFRICA'S POOREST.
THE TORAH, THE BIBLE,
TELLS US 36 TIMES, MORE
THAN IT TELLS US ANYTHING
ELSE, TO LOVE A STRANGER.
WHO IN THE WORLD IS MORE
OF A STRANGER THAN THE
AFRICAN POOR IN NEED OF
MEDICAL CARE.
George: FOR SEVERAL
YEARS, GERSEN AND HIS WIFE
HAVE GIVEN MILLIONS OF
DOLLARS TO SUPPORT
MISSIONARY DOCTORS ACROSS
AFRICA.
IT IS AN HONOR AND A
PRIVILEGE FOR MY WIFE, WHO
IS A RABBI, AND I, TO
PARTNER WITH -- I TERM IT
CAREFUL, THESE SACRED
PEOPLE.
THEY GO INTO ENVIRONMENTS
THAT ARE COMPLETELY
FORBIDDING, AND GIVE UP
EVERYTHING WE IN THE WEST
CONSIDER NECESSITIES A LOT
OF THE TIME, IN ORDER TO
FULFILL THEIR RELIGIOUS
OBLIGATION TO SERVE THE
POOR.
George: GERSEN
INSISTS THERE IS NO ONE
BETTER WHO DELIVERS A
HIGHER RETURN ON
INVESTMENT THAN MEDICAL
MISSIONARIES SERVING IN
AFRICA.
HE POINTS TO WHAT
DR. FADER AND HIS TEAM DID
AT THE HOSPITAL IN 2015.
HE ENABLED 35,000
PATIENT VISITS, HE ENABLED
1200 SURGERIES, AND HE
ENABLED 800 CATARACT
SURGERIES ALL FOR UNDER
HALF A MILLION DOLLARS.
> AND THAT'S IT FOR THIS
SPECIAL CBN NEWS REPORT
FROM AFRICA.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR
JOINING US.
UNTIL NEXT WEEK, GOOD-BYE
AND GOD BLESS YOU.
