Experiencing the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Kevin describes his baptism in the Holy Spirit. Read Transcript

When he prayed over us, he prayed over us together.

He put one hand on my head and one hand

on her head, which I've always treasured that.

I always thought that was very nice for us

to be prayed over as a couple.

Now, we knew there were tongues and I

think we were open to that and we knew there

were other spiritual gifts.

What was my experience?

I did have a physical experience,

which was tingling all over, particularly in my hands

and in my head, like great warmth and tingling, OK.

But the spiritual experience I had

was a very strong awareness of the presence of Jesus

as if he were standing right next to me in a way

I had never had before.

Now, I believed in the presence of Jesus in the church.

I believed in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit,

through baptism I believe that Jesus

is present in the Tabernacle and in the celebration

of the Eucharist.

Those are all matters of faith for me,

but this was a personal experience of Jesus standing

next to me, which I had never had before

and it was very powerful.

And that's what I went home with that night, myself,

and it was an abiding experience, OK.

And I mean, some people might--

for some people, they might have an experience

of the Holy Spirit--

personally of the Holy Spirit, but my personal experience

was of Jesus in that moment.

And it was so changing, I mean, suddenly,

even that night, scripture was alive,

my faith was renewed, filled with joy,

and I said, well we prayed.

What I had prayed was, Lord, if there's

more of your Holy Spirit that you want to give me in my life,

I'm open and I want it, because I want what you want.

OK.

So we had no instruction, we had no history,

we had no understanding, very much,

of baptism and the Holy Spirit, and I thought, well this is it.

I mean, it was so life changing and the whole next week,

life was really very, very different

and I had no doubt in my mind that I

was baptized in the Holy Spirit, but we didn't know anything

about these gifts, because nobody that night

prayed in tongues.

Nobody that night experienced any of the charismatic gifts

as we know them today.

But people had different experiences,

maybe more or less similar or they would describe it

in different ways of what they experienced that night.

So we decided we had to find out about the spiritual gifts

and someone told us that there was this group called

the full gospel businessmen who are ordinary folks who promoted

this baptism in the Holy Spirit and we found out

that there was a local chapter and that this fellow named

Ray Bullard was the local president of the chapter.

Well, he was a deacon at Calvary Temple,

which was the local Assembly of God Church here,

and we got a hold of him and said--

and I can't imagine how he reacted to this phone call--

hi, we're a bunch of Catholics from Notre Dame

and we've just been baptized in the Holy Spirit

and we would like to find out about the spiritual gifts.

Can you help us?

Well, of course, from his background,

Catholics weren't baptized in the Holy Spirit

and Catholics probably weren't Christians

and I mean, that was kind of his background

and he said, he talked to a bunch of people

and he said, well would you come over to our house?

The following Monday, Monday week,

which I think was the 13th of March, and we went to his home

in Mishawaka, which is the next town over here,

and we met down in their basement,

kind of, recreation room and he had brought,

let me say, 20 Pentecostal pastors and leaders

to see this strange thing, OK.

And we came, wasn't quite the same nine people

who had been there the first night,

but I think it was nine people and we came together

and it was a wonderful night and also it was

a humorous night, in many ways.

So we told them our experience and what had

happened [INAUDIBLE] before.

We didn't know that they didn't think we were baptized

in the Holy Spirit yet.

Why?

Because there were denominational

Pentecostals who insist on the evidence of tongues.

We thought we were baptized in the Holy Spirit

and we were already having a wonderful time,

OK, but we wanted to know about these spiritual gifts.

They talked to us for a longtime, half hour,

45 minutes, about the gift of tongues.

At this time, we didn't know anything

about tarrying, which is a Pentecostal tradition where

people kind of wait for a long time for the coming

of the Holy Spirit.

We didn't know anything about that

and weren't even thinking about that.

So after maybe 45 minutes, they said

they were going to pray over us and they prayed over us

and within a minute, I think all of us or almost all of us

were praying in tongues quite vociferously and joyfully

and it was wonderful.

It was that break through into what

I would now call the realm of the charismatic gifts

and it was just wonderful and that went on for a long time.

These Pentecostal people we had just met,

they were extremely happy and they were overjoyed

and we were overjoyed.

So that was our first experience of charismatic gifts.
