NARRATOR: Simone Biles
was six years old when
her grandparents adopted her.
Nellie, who Simone
now calls Mom,
says she was looking forward
to traveling the world
and struggled with
the idea of adopting
Simone and her sister, Adria.
NELLIE BILES: It was
not an easy decision.
I remember wanting to leave
everybody behind because there
were so many needs on me.
And no one knew
what my needs were.
I remember crying about it.
I remember probably having
a temper tantrum about it.
And then I remember
praying about it.
NARRATOR: She says God sent her
a message she could not ignore.
NELLIE BILES: I went
to the conference,
and I remember lunchtime,
I was just by myself.
I was sitting by
myself because I
was doing a lot of thinking
as to what was going to happen
to me when I got back home.
And this person came and
said, can I sit with you?
So, she sat, and I was
not paying attention
to this person at all.
And she started talking.
I don't know why this
stranger wanted to talk to me.
Because I just wanted
to be by myself.
And she started telling me about
taking on her daughter's child
and how much problems
she had with the child
and how much needs
the child had.
And I'm not asking her
because originally, I
couldn't care less, was
what I was saying to myself.
I'm like, why is
she telling me this.
Because I'm not asking her.
She kept on talking and talking.
And then I started listening.
Because it sound very similar
to the situation I was in.
And I didn't say
anything to her.
I never said that I was
having similar issues.
She just kept talking.
And then I remember
the last thing
she said to me was, don't ever
forget that the Lord is never
going to give you any
more than you can handle.
And she finished her
food, and she left.
And I'm sitting
there, and I'm just
blown away that someone
would come and sit
at my table, a
complete stranger,
and tell me something
I needed to hear.
So, I just knew that that
was my guardian angel.
After that conference, I
mean, I'm driving home,
and I'm praying,
and I'm thanking
God for sending
someone to talk to me.
It was meant to be.
I mean, without a
shadow of a doubt.
Nothing was supposed
to be different.
I was supposed to be their
mother for Simone and Adria.
And it's the best
decision we've ever made.
NARRATOR: Nellie says God
fulfilled her dreams of travel
through Simone's
career in gymnastics.
NELLIE BILES: He
continued to fulfill
my dream of traveling
because we traveled
to many, many countries
to see Simone compete.
And countries that I would
not even put on my list.
We enjoyed whatever country
that we ended up going to.
NARRATOR: When talking
about adoption,
Nellie encourages parents to
open their hearts completely
to give and receive love.
NELLIE BILES: I believe
it's opening your heart
and doing it with
everything that you have.
You don't say you're
going to adopt a child
or children without opening
your heart completely.
You have to do that.
They need to be nurtured.
They need to be feeling.
They need to feel safe.
And they need to feel loved.
And once a person does that,
when your making a decision
to adopt a child or
children, it's best,
best decision you
could ever make.
It's so rewarding.
