NARRATOR: He performs
before sold out
crowds around the world.
He's won over two
dozen music awards,
and he's been a spokesman
for Coca Cola, Sony, Colgate,
and Toyota.
He even has a microphone
named after him.
He's pop star Gary Valenciano.
But Gary V as he's called
is more than a talented,
award winning musician.
He's a man who
loves Jesus Christ
and lives to spread
the life changing
message of the gospel
throughout the world.
Joining me now is
my dear friend Gary V
and it's wonderful
to have you here.
Just so everybody
knows, his wife, Angeli,
has been on the board of CBN
Asia since the founding of it
way back in 1994.
And it just seems
like yesterday.
When I say 1994,
it's a long time ago.
It's been awhile.
To some, it might seem
like a long time ago.
But there's so many things that
transpired in the Philippines.
And then you have
CBN Asia getting
involved in so many things--
Operation Blessing also.
So I guess because of the
newness of events in there,
20 years doesn't seem
like too long ago.
I saw you perform in June.
And it was electrifying.
And it took me back to 1994.
And I tell you, you
haven't aged at all.
And the description of you
as Mr. Pure Energy is--
what you do is unbelievable.
And a lot of people
don't know that you
have juvenile diabetes.
You've had it all your life.
And yet, you have all
this great energy.
And you're a walking miracle.
GARY V: I used to think that
calling myself a walking
miracle would make people go,
talk about trying to be humble.
He's not being
humble about that.
But when the doctors say that
your life expectancy from
the day of diagnosis is only
30 years and now I've been
on my 38th year with no
problems whatsoever-- now,
being called Mr. Pure
Energy at my age, I mean,
feeling the creaks and little--
I'm Mr. Pure Couch.
I mean, you come out
on stage and I perform.
And living up to the
Pure Energy is no longer
a challenge for
me, because I think
people get to understand and
see that the energy is not
mine in the first place.
And it's not pure
because of my walk.
It's really pure because
of the source of the energy
that comes out.
Because sometimes, Gordon,
I step off of that stage,
I have a lack of sleep,
sugar levels acting up.
And yet when I step
out there, boom.
And it's not just
because I love what I do,
but really it's just the
love of God showing to me
and proving to me again and
again I'm here for you, Gary,
and I'm using you
for this purpose.
Make yourself available
and and that's it.
Well, when the anointing hits
you, all the fatigue leaves.
You're absolutely right.
Because sometimes I watch
the playback of the concerts
and I'm like, can I
ever do that again?
And immediately, no.
But I can do it for you.
So that's what keeps me
going, because I never
thought I'd even end up in
the entertainment industry.
What more stay around and
hang around for 33 years
doing the same thing and not
falling out of love with it,
but actually
falling more in love
with it, because
of the ideas that
continue to come into my mind
and my heart for the people.
Well, tell us
about those ideas.
What's fresh and new for you?
What new anointing do you
have, new word do you have?
Let's start from
the very beginning.
I have always been a frustrated
multimedia kind of guy.
Like when I was young--
GORDON: I can't
imagine you frustrated.
No, really.
No, because when I was young,
when Star Wars first came out,
I used to have a Super 8 camera
and I would create lasers
and I would burn stuff
that belonged to my dad,
just because they
looked like the cannons
that-- maybe "Star Wars," I
would create lasers and stuff.
So that's always
been-- storytelling
has been a part of me.
So to my three children,
when they were a lot younger,
I would actually read the
stories and change my voice.
I mean, I would get
into the character.
And it did affect them.
They have never forgotten that.
So what I've been working on
lately are short Bible stories
using some of my songs
scored like a movie
and I have friends from back
home who-- I have a friend.
His name is Mari Kaimo.
And he does all the narrating.
And it's beautifully done.
And then I play the
roles of different people
that I make my friends hear and
they go, who's that character?
That's me.
But I'm really into creating
now short Bible stories that
go maybe for a minute and
a half to two minutes,
enough for people to be in
their cars, off to work,
and they're not
listening to a sermon.
They're listening
to a short story,
short enough to create a long,
lasting impact in their lives.
I love doing stuff like that.
I stay up at night
and I'm working on it.
My wife says, honey,
it's time to go to bed.
I said, wait.
But you can't cut that.
You're flowing in the--
When you're in the flow,
you don't want to stop.
That's a different
kind of energy, Gordon.
I mean, you're in your room
and it's just you and Christ.
And if people want to know a
little bit more about this,
you can check out
on YouTube Gary V TV
and there are some
things I released
during what we call the holy
week event in the Philippines.
So from Wednesday, Thursday,
Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
there was something
for each day.
And these were just things
that came into my head.
And the Lord allowed
me to execute them
at the proper time.
And that's just one.
All right.
Give us two.
The other one is-- you know
how children now love to play.
Children love to play.
But many times, they end up
using only their hands to play
and in a space that's
about this big.
But there is an effort
now and a movement now
in the Philippines--
it's for UNICEF,
of which I am the ambassador of
goodwill for the Philippines--
there's an effort to make
children know that they can
move other parts of their
bodies and enjoy just as much
by playing.
I mean, literally playing games.
So we're creating two CDs
of old, Filipino classics
that have to do with games.
And we're treating
them in a way that
would cater to younger people.
They can go out there
and really enjoy.
That's another thing
that I'm working on.
What would you tell
somebody watching
who's maybe frustrated, too?
And how do you release
the creative energy
that God has put within you?
How do you do that?
How do you get over the
reluctance-- am I going to look
silly?
Are people going to laugh?
Or is this going to work?
How do you get through it?
Well, in my case, I have a
great team that I work with.
Now, God may give you
something, may give you
something to contribute, but He
may not want you to execute it.
So there are times
when I have an idea,
but I know it's not
for me to execute.
And then I listen to my team.
And they're able to guide
me as to where I want to go,
because creative people
sometimes can just go so way
out of the box and to
a point where it only
caters to themselves, believing
that everybody else is
going to like it,
but actually it
doesn't always work that way.
But if you have an
idea and it's something
that's brewing in your
heart, first this.
If you believe
it's from the Lord,
then you have to stay
in contact with Him.
You have to stay
in touch with Him,
because He can take it from
this direction to this direction
and still end up in the
target that you want,
that He originally
intended for it to go to.
The original design
will always end up
the way it was designed to
be, but the way, the process
by which you get
there may not be
according to the way you planned
it, but the way He planned it.
And when God gives
you an idea, there's
no way of saying that OK, it's
going to end once it's done.
Because there are songs that
He's given me that still today
create an impact
in people's lives.
So there's no end to it.
I may be gone maybe
10 years from now.
There's other artists
that have come out.
But if they do any of my
songs or at least the songs
that the Lord has given me, then
it creates a whole new face.
But the original intention
was you start it out, Gary.
I'll take it to where--
It needs to go.
It needs to go.
I'll guide the
arrow to the target.
So that's my advice.
I've actually lived that.
I came back-- I'll tell
you a personal story.
I came back from a
mission trip to India.
And it was just horrible.
I felt defeated.
It was one of those where
you preach your heart out
and I felt like I was
preaching into a brick wall.
And nothing seemed to break.
And we didn't get
the breakthrough
that I thought we
were going to get.
And I come back and I'm
over with Gary and Angeli.
They invited us over for dinner.
Scott Ross was there,
Catherine was there.
And you sat me
down and said, I've
got a brand new song for you.
And it was "Face to Face."
And boy, it just picked me up.
It was unfinished, I remember.
I said, it's not finished, OK?
But this is what I'm working on.
And I had no idea it had
spoken into his life.
But even that-- I mean, for
creative people out there,
you just have to make
yourself available to be
used in any way.
And even if the product may
not be exactly finished,
somebody, like Gordon,
could hear it and it could--
I didn't know that it was
speaking into your life.
The lyrics were--
I mean, I felt
like it was God singing to me.
Everything that
was in that lyric
was exactly what I was
feeling in that moment.
You have more than
me as an audience.
You have a huge audience
in the Muslim world.
How in the world
did that happen?
Nothing was planned, Gordon.
But I guess because
when I do my music,
I'm not trying to shove down
anything into people's throats
and say, this is the
way it's got to be done.
I'm really sharing
part of myself.
I have a dear pastor
friend in Manila
who said from the day I met you,
I kind of knew more about you
than you actually know.
And I said, why?
And he said because
your music says it all.
Your music is a
piece of who you are.
And I said, wow, really?
I better be careful
with my music.
And he says, no, it's just you
being at your rawest state.
And you allow people
to see who you are.
And because of that,
it's authentic.
So when I have failed
and I fall short,
I make people know
that through my music.
But I make them know that above
that, there's God's grace,
there's God's forgiveness,
there's God's love
that really never fails.
And so when, I guess,
the Muslim world, I'm
not talking about a religion.
I'm talking about
a relationship.
They get to see that.
They know about my diabetes.
So one time, there
was an incident
that took place down south
in an area that wasn't
too safe for people to go to.
But as part of UNICEF,
I said, let's go.
So I went.
And it was all Muslims.
Their houses were burned.
And the government was
being blamed for it,
but apparently a
lot of what goes on
down there is between the clans,
among the Muslims themselves.
So it's that whole mix up
of everything going on.
And when I went, I
spoke to some of them.
And many of the women
especially were covered.
And the only way for me to
sing was to use a bullhorn.
It was like, Hi, good
afternoon, everybody.
I'm here now.
And they were all
like this, they
were being very conservative.
And none of them were
reacting in the beginning
until I started singing a song
that I told them, many of you
have been around and supporting
me for so many years.
And here is my way of letting
you know that I'm here
and I'm loving you the same way.
And I rerecorded the song
off of Steven Curtis Chapman,
which is "I Will Be Here."
So I started singing it,
tomorrow if you wake up
and the sun does not
appear, I, I will be here.
And slowly, from the
women being like this,
you could see them-- I could
literally see it happening.
And then later on, I was
able to reach out to them
and shake their hands.
And the men, they're
watching and seeing,
is this person for real?
Because they're only used
to seeing me on television.
And here I am in a place where
many soldiers wouldn't even
dare go to because they're not
sure they'll come out alive
and I was there being
able to speak to them.
And the greatest thing
was when I was introduced,
the mayor came up.
And the first thing he says is,
praise the Lord, hallelujah.
And I was like, and we're there.
But you see--
Of a Muslim village?
In a Muslim village.
But they respected the man,
maybe because, again, he
wasn't introducing--
he was never there
to introduce a new religion.
He was just being himself,
a follower of Christ,
loving the Muslims, who
Christ died for anyway.
So when you're able
to make yourself
available for that
kind of use, there's
no telling as to
how far and how deep
an impact God is going to make
in the lives of those who you
might even think
would never listen
to anything about the Lord.
And I didn't preach.
I just stood there.
And I guess they saw God through
that one act and they softened.
And then later on, they were
acting like everybody else.
Oh, you come back, [FILIPINO].
[FILIPINO] means hope you can
come back. [FILIPINO], hi.
And I'm like, sure.
And those are moments that
cameras may never catch,
but they don't have to.
They don't have to.
They don't have to.
For that moment to
last for all eternity,
a camera doesn't
have to be there.
When you change a heart and
you open them up to God's love,
that will last.
You just have to make
that little [POP NOISE].
And if that wall begins to
come down a bit, somebody else,
God's going to
create another event
that He's going to start
chipping away that wall
so when it comes down, they get
to see Him for who He really is
and who He can be
in their lives.
And that's just one
story, that story
of my being in that
area of the Philippines
is one of the many stories
I'm putting in a book.
Each day, I've been
challenged by my sister, Gary,
you need to put a book
together about the events that
have had an impact in
your life and your career.
And Gordon, there
are many stories.
I want to read it.
One of these days, I'll
share it with people.
You've got to get it done.
All right.
I've got two of his
latest CDs, "Gold"
and then "Gary V With You."
They're available now.
So if you want to check
out my favorite singer
in the whole wide world,
all you have to do
is go to where music
is distributed, put
Gary V into your playlist,
and you will thank me for it.
And Gary, thank
you for being here.
Thank you, Gordon.
I was able to speak and share
so much of this with people
out there.
