Chris: HELLO, AND
WELCOME TO THIS EDITION OF
"JERUSALEM DATELINE." I'M
CHRIS MITCHELL, ALONG WITH
SCOTT ROSS.
YOU'RE BACK HERE IN
JERUSALEM.
WHAT IS IT LIKE?
I LOVE IT HERE.
I REALLY DO.
I REMEMBER YEARS AGO A
MENTOR OF MINE, A SPIRITUAL
MENTOR, AND A MAN WHO IS
BURIED NOW JUST DOWN THE
STREET, DERRICK PRINCE, MADE
THIS STATEMENT: YOU DON'T
CHOOSE JERUSALEM.
IT CHOOSES YOU.
Chris: THAT'S RIGHT.
THERE IS SOMETHING TO BE
SAID TO THAT.
THIS SHOW IS GOING TO BE
ABOUT THREE STORIES YOU HAVE
DONE, ONE INCLUDING NEDRA.
AND THE FIRST IS ON DIVIDING
JERUSALEM.
YOU TOOK TO THE STREETS OF
JERUSALEM IN TEL AVIV,
ASKING PEOPLE ABOUT THE CITY
AND WHETHER OR NOT IT SHOULD
BE DIVIDED.
THERE IS NOT A SIMPLE
ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION.
YOU CERTAINLY HAVE PASSION
ON BOTH SIDES.
THIS IS NO EASY MATTER, TO
DIVIDE JERUSALEM AND SAY,
FINE.
YOU TAKE AN APPLE AND CUT IT
IN HALF, AND YOU HAVE TWO
PIECES.
BUT THESE PEOPLE, ARABS AND
JEWS, LIVE TOGETHER.
THEY'RE INTEGRATED.
THEY CAN BE NEIGHBORS.
THEY CAN BE ACROSS THE
STREET FROM ONE ANOTHER.
I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU DO
THIS.
THIS HAS GOT TO BE A GOD
ANSWER.
Chris: I THINK THAT'S
WHY THE BIBLE SAYS TO PRAY
FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM.
HERE IS THE STORY ON
DIVIDING JERUSALEM, WHEN
SCOTT TOOK TO THE STREETS OF
JERUSALEM AND TEL AVIV.
Reporter: JERUSALEM,
ITS NAME MEANS CITY OF
PEACE, AND YET IT HAS BEEN
DESTROYED, REBUILT,
CONQUERED, AND RECONQUERED
MORE TIMES THAN ANY OTHER
CITY IN HISTORY.
THE CITY HAS A ROLE TO
PLAY.
IT IS THE CENTER OF THE
WORLD.
FOR 19 YEARS, JERUSALEM WAS
DIVIDED BETWEEN ISRAEL AND
JORDAN.
WITH THE OLD CITY ON THE
JORDAN SIDE.
IN 1967, THE SIX-DAY WAR LED
TO THE REUNITING OF THE CITY
UNDER ISRAELI SOVEREIGNTY.
NOW PART OF THE U.S.-BACKED
PEACE PROCESS SEEKS TO SPLIT
THE CITY ONCE AIN, BUT
ISRAEL MAINTAINS JERUSALEM
IS ITS ETERNAL, UNDIVIDED
CAPITAL.
PALESTINIANS WANT THE
EASTERN PART FOR THE CAPITAL
OF A FUTURE STATE.
THE JERUSALEM MAYOR, NIR
BARCOT TOLD ME DIVIDING THE
CITY IS IMPOSSIBLE.
IT CANNOT BE DIVIDED.
IT WILL NEVER FUNCTION AS A
DIVIDED CITY.
IT HAS TO BE ONE PHYSICAL
CITY, ENABLING ALL TO
WORSHIP THEIR FAITH THEIR
WAY, TO RESPECT EACH OTHER,
AND THERE IS ROOM FOR ALL.
Reporter: CAN YOU
CONVINCE PALESTINIANS OF
THAT?
THE PALESTINIAN RESIDENTS
THAT LIVE IN JERUSALEM
UNDERSTAND THAT.
AND IT WILL NEVER WORK.
THERE IS NOT ONE GOOD
EXAMPLE OF ATHAT WAS
SPLIT THAT EVER FUNCTIONED.
Reporter: JERUSALEM IS
MENTIONED BY NAME MORE THAN
800 TIMES IN THE BIBLE, EVEN
MORE IF YOU COUNT SYNONYMS,
LIKE THE CITY OF DAVID AND
ZION.
660 OF THE REFERENCES ARE IN
THE HEBREW BIBLE, OR OLD
TESTAMENT.
I REMEMBER THE DAY I SAT
IN THE PARK, AND MY KIDS
WERE PLAYING IN THE PARK,
AND ZACHARIAH SAID, THERE
WILL BE A TIME WHEN CHILDREN
WILL PLAY IN THE STREETS OF
THE CITY OF JERUSALEM.
Reporter: I SAT DOWN
WITH AN AUTHOR AND
BUSINESSMAN AND ASKED HIM
ABOUT THE JEWISH CONNECTION
TO THIS CITY.
WHAT DOES JERUSALEM MEAN TO
THE JEWISH PEOPLE?
WHY JERUSALEM?
IT'S A NAME -- IT COULD
BE A NAME BECAUSE WHY NOT A
CITY ON THE RESOURCES, BUT
GOD CHOSE IT.
Reporter: THE CITY
BEING DIVIDED AT ONE POINT,
AND REUNITED IN '67, BUT
WILL IT BE DIVIDED AGAIN?
I DON'T THINK IT CAN BE.
IN HEBREW, IT DOESN'T SAY
COMPACTED.
IT IT IS REUNITED TOGETHER.
GOD IS SAYING IT IS A CITY
WILL BE TORN ASUNDER, BUT
I'M GOING TO BRING IT BACK
TOGETHER.
Reporter: I TALKED WITH
ISRAELIS IN TEL AVIV, AND
THEY SAY THEY'RE WILLING TO
SHARE THE CITY, BUT NOT
DIVIDE IT.
MY HEART -- IT'S
SOMETHING I CANNOT AGREE
WITH, THAT MY TOWN IS GOING
TO BE SEPARATED.
WE BELIEVE THAT JERUSALEM
IS SUPPOSED TO BE JEWISH
FOREVER.
BUT I DO BELIEVE THAT THERE
IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SOLUTION
THAT WILL BE GOOD FOR BOTH
OF THE PEOPLE.
Reporter: CAPINSKI SAYS
GOD HAS A PLAN FOR THE CITY,
WHETHER THE WORLD BELIEVES
IN IT OR NOT.
WHAT DO OTHER NATIONS SAY,
OR YOU OR OTHER GROUPS SPEAK
THE WAY YOU'RE SPEAKING NOW,
WITH YOUR ARGUMENT AND POINT
OF VIEWS.
HOW DOES A PALESTINIAN
RESPOND TO THAT?
I THINK THE SECRET TO
UNDERSTANDING THIS COUNTRY
IS THAT FACTS ARE COMPLETELY
IRRELEVANT.
FACTS ARE COMPLETELY IRL
IRRELEVANT.
PERCEPTION OF REALITY IS
WHAT COUNTS.
TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING
ON, YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND
WHAT THE PALESTINIANS
PERCEIVE.
THEY REALLY BELIEVE WHAT
THEY BELIEVE BECAUSE THEY'VE
BEEN TOLD THAT'S WHAT THEY
BELIEVE.
SO DIALOGUE WITH A
PALESTINIAN TODAY IS ALMOST
IMPOSSIBLE.
Reporter: JERUSALEM IS
NEVER MENTIONED BY NAME IN
THE QURAN, BUT MUSLIMS
INTERPRET A REFERENCE TO THE
FURTHEST MOSQUE BEING TO
AL-AQSA MOSQUE ON THE TEM
TEMPLE MOUNT.
THIS IS ALL ARAB TOWN.
IT CAN'T BE DIVIDED.
Reporter: THEY EVEN
ARGUE AMONG THEMSELVES.
I SAY TO GIVE.
JERUSALEM IS ONLY FOR
PALESTINIANS.
BUT I THINK ISRAEL IS
OUTSIDE.
Reporter: HERE IS THE
ISSUE RIGHT HERE.
AS ONE OF THE MOST CONTESTED
PLACES ON EARTH, THE BIBLE
SAYS JERUSALEM WILL BE A
STUMBLING BLOCK TO THE
ENTIRE WORLD.
WE PRAY FOR THE PEACE OF
JERUSALEM, WHAT ARE WE
PAYING FOR?
THE WORD FOR PEACE IS
SHALOM.
IT COMES OUT OF THE WORD
COMPLETE.
WE'RE PRAYING FOR THAT
COMPLETION, WHEN THE
HEAVENLY AND THE EARTHLY
WILL BE CLEARLY SEEN AS
UNITED.
IT IS A FUTURE REVELATION.
Reporter: DO YOU THINK
IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN
YOUR LIFETIME?
I BELIEVE IT IS
IMMINENT.
Reporter: THE FUTURE OF
JERUSALEM AFFECTS PEOPLE ALL
OVER THE WORLD.
HERE IS THE REST OF THE NEWS
FROM OUR CBN STUDIO IN
VIRGINIA BEACH.
Efrem: THE VATICAN HAS
OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED THE
STATE OF PALESTINE IN A NEW
TREAT.
IMMEDIATELY SPARKING ISRAELI
OUTRAGE AND ACCUSATIONS IT
WILL HURT PEACE PROSPECTS.
THE TREATY COVERS THE ROMAN
CATHOLIC CHURCH IN
PALESTINIAN AREAS.
THE PALESTINIANS SAY IT
GIVES THEM A BIG VICTORY
OVER ISRAEL IN THEIR QUEST
TO CREATE A PALESTINIAN
STATE.
IT RECOGNIZES PALESTINIAN
PALESTINE HAS HAVING 67
BORDERS, AND THE CAPITAL,
JERUSALEM, AND HAVING RIGHTS
IN A ACCORDANCE WITH THE
WORLD'S LAW.
Efrem: I SPOKE WITH
PAUL BONICCELI ABOUT THIS
MOVE BY THE VATICAN.
DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE
CATHOLIC CHURCH IS TAKING
SIDES AGAINST ISRAEL?
UNFORTUNATELY, YES,
WHETHER THEY WANT TO ADMIT
THAT OR NOT.
WHAT THE POPE HAS DONE IS TO
RECOGNIZE A STATE THAT
DOESN'T REALLY EXIST, AND
DOESN'T REALLY HAVE
CONFIRMED BORDERS, THAT IS
TERRIBLY CORRUPT, NOT
DEMOCRATIC, AND IT PLAYS A
ROLE IN AIDING AND ABETTING
THOSE POWERS AROUND THE
REGION THAT ARE HARMFUL TO
ISRAEL AND HARMFUL TO PEACE
IN THE REGION.
Efrem: HOW WILL THIS
IMPACT THE SO-CALLED PEACE
PROCESS, DO YOU THINK?
IT MAKES IT VERY
DIFFICULT FOR ISRAEL TO
CONTINUE FORWARD WITH PEACE
NEGOTIATIONS WHEN EVERYBODY
KEEPS SAYING PALESTINE GETS
WHATEVER IT WANTS NOW, AND
ISRAEL HAS TO CAPITULATE.
THIS IS NO DIFFERENT WITH
CUBA.
THE UNITED STATES GAVE CUBA
EVERYTHING IT WANTED WITHOUT
FREEING ANY PRISONERS,
WITHOUT CHANGING THE WAY IT
GOVERNS, AND WITHOUT DOING
ANYTHING TO LET THE AVERAGE
CUBAN EXART PARTICIPATE IN
THE ECONOMY.
THEY GIVE IN AND HOPE IT
WILL ALL WORK OUT LATER.
Efrem: MANY NATIONS
HAVE RECOGNIZED A
PALESTINIAN STATE.
WHY DOES THIS MOVE HAVE SO
MUCH SIGNIFICANT.
BECAUSE THE VATICAN IS
SEEN AS A WESTERN STATE.
AND MOST OF THE WESTERN
COUNTRIES HAVE NOT FORMALLY
RECOGNIZED PALESTINE.
SO WHEN THE VATICAN DOES, IT
IS LIKE ONE OF THAT GROUP IS
DOING IT, TOO.
Efrem: SOME SAY IT IS A
DOUBLE STANDARD BECAUSE THE
VATICAN SPEAKS OUT AGAINST
THE SLAUGHTER OF CHRISTIANS
ELSEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE
EAST, BUT NOW THEY'RE
RECOGNIZING PALESTINE, WHO
HAS ALSO HURT CHRISTIANS.
THE POPE IS A VERY
SKILLED MAN, AND HE HAS
AROUND HIM A LOT OF HIGHLY
EDUCATED CAR CARDINALS AND
PLEEFTS AN PRIESTS AND THEY
SEEM TO BE ON THE LEFT.
AND THEY THINK THE WORLD
SHOULD BE AT PEACE AND GET
ALONE THE MORE MAE RECEDE,
BUT THAT DOESN'T ALWAYS
WORK.
Efrem: ISRAEL IS
GETTING SUPPORT FROM AN
UNLIKELY PLACE, ARAB
PEOPLE.
THEY SET UP A PRO-ISRAELI
Facebook PAGE TO COUNTER A
CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE ISRAELI
FORCES.
ONE SAUDI WOMAN WROTE SHE
WOULD LIKE TO SEND A MESSAGE
OF PEACE AND LOVE TO
ISRAEL.
AND THEY HAVE RIGHTS TO THE
LAND OF PALESTINE.
AND ONE WROTE, "I SUPPORT
THE STATE OF ISRAEL AND
THEIR ARMY AND NATION, BUT
IN OUR COUNTRY, WE'RE NOT
ALLOWED TO EXPRESS OUR PINS
OR W OPINIONS, OR WE WILL
GET KILL."
UP NEXT, WE GO BACK TO CHRIS
MITCHELL AND SCOTT ROSS.
Chris: SCOTT, ONE OF
THE OTHER STORIES YOU DID
WAS SITTING DOWN WITH YOSI
ON THE PROMENADE,
OVERLOOKING THE CITY OF
JERUSALEM, AND THEN YOU WENT
TO DIFFERENT PLACES AROUND
THE CITY.
HE WROTE A BOOK ABOUT "LIGHT
DREAMERS," ABOUT THE MEN WHO
CAPTURED THE CITY OF
JERUSALEM IN 1967.
WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?
Reporter: IT GAVE ME
GOOSE BUMPS, BECAUSE WE WERE
STANDING AT THE VERY GATE
THESE YOUNG MEN ENTERED.
AND YOU LOOK AT THE
PHOTOGRAPHS, AND THERE IS A
CLASSIC SHOT OF THOME
STANDING AT THE WALL, AND
THEY'RE HARDENED SOLDIERS,
WHO JUST FINISHED KILLING A
LOT OF PEOPLE, WITH TEARS
STREAMING DOWN THEIR FACE.
AND MANY OF US WERE
THINKING, IS THIS THE
FULFILLMENT OF THE PROPHECY,
THAT THE TIME OF THE
GENTILES HAVE BEEN
FULFILLED, AND THE JEWS HAVE
BEEN RETURNED TO THE LAND.
Chris: HERE IS THAT
STORY ABOUT THE MEN WHO WERE
LIGHT DREAMERS.
Reporter: THE TEMPLE
MOUNT IS IN OUR HANDS.
THE FAMOUS WORDS OF
COMMANDER MOTER GORE, WHO'S
MEN HELPED REUNITE THE MEN
IN JERUSALEM.
FULFILLING A 2,000-YEAR-OLD
DREAM.
THE BOOKA YOUNG
YOUNG ISRAELI MEN WHO GAVE
THEM THEIR GREATEST VICTORY
IN, I WOULD SAY, HISTORY.
Reporter: I SPOKE WITH
HIM ABOUT HIS BOOK, "THE
LIGHT DREAMERS," THE STORY
OF THE PARATROOPERS WHO
REUNITED JERUSALEM AND
REUNITED A NATION.
HE TOOK ME TO THE MT. OF
OLIVES WHERE MOTER GORE
COMMANDED HIS TROOPS.
THE PARATROOPERS CAME TO
THIS SPOT ON THE MORNING OF
JUNE 7th, 1967.
MONTEGOR, A VERY FAMOUS
PHOTOGRAPH, IS LOOKING OUT
ON TO THE TEMPLE MOUNT, AND
MAKING THE FINAL
PREPARATIONS IN HIS MIND FOR
THE DESCENT AND THE CONQUEST
OF THE OLD CITY.
SO HE SAYS, PA PARATROOPERS
OF BRIGADE 55.
AND HE TELLS THEM JEWS
WAITED THOUSANDS OF YEARS
FOR THIS MOMENT.
YOU ARE THE ONES WHO ARE
PRIVILEGED TO RESTORE
JERUSALEM TO THE JEWISH
PEOPLE.
Reporter: WE RETRACED
THEIR STEPS TO LION'S GATE
OF THE OLD CITY.
THIS IS THE GATE THAT THE
PARATROOPERS, THE ISRAELI
SOLDIERS, ENTERED ON
JUNE 7th 1967, AND THEN
WHEN THEY REACHED THE TEMPLE
MOUNT, THE FAMOUS WORDS OF
THE COMMANDER OF THE
PARATROOPERS WERE, "THE
TEMPLE MOUNT IS IN OUR
HANDS."
AND THEY FIND THE WALL, AND
THERE ARE MANY
BATTLE-HARDENED
PARATROOPERS, WEEPING AT THE
WALL.
Reporter: HE
PERSONALLIZE PERSONALIZES
THE HISTORY OF JERUSALEM
THROUGH THE EYES OF SIX SUCH
DREAMERS.
I THOUGHT WHAT WAS
MISSING IN THE WAY PEOPLE
RELATE TO THE STORY OF
ISRAEL WAS THAT PERSONAL
CONNECTION.
Reporter: THESE
PARATROOPERS, DO THEY REALLY
REFLECT AND MARITIME COSEM
MICROCOSEM THE STORYOF
ISRAEL?
ITWAS VERY IMPORTANT FOR
ME TOTELL THE WHOLE STORY
OF JERUSALEM.
THE WAY I UNDERSTAND THE
JEWISH PEOPLE IS WE'RE
FAMILY.
Reporter: IT TOOK HIM
12 OF HIS 32 YEARS IN ISRAEL
TO WRITE THE BOOK.
ONE OF MY CHARACTERS
STARTS OFF AS A BOY, LIVING
ON ONE OF THESE RADICAL
KIBBUTZ.
HE CREATES THE FIRST
PRIVATIZED COMPANY IN THE
STATE OF ISRAELAND OPENS
THE WAY TO THE HIGH-TECH
FREE ECONOMY THAT WE HAVE
TODAY.
Reporter: ONE BECAME
KNOWN AS ISRAEL'S BOB DYLAN,
AND ANOTHER STARTED THE
SETTLEMENT MOVEMENT IN JUDEA
AND SAMARIA.
HE SAYS HIS BOOK TRIES TO
SHOW THE STRUGGLE WITHIN THE
ISRAELI SOUL OVER MAKING
PEACE WITH THE PALESTINIANS
AND DIVIDING JERUSALEM.
IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD, I'VE
GOT JEWISH NEIGHBORS, I'VE
GOT ARAB NEIGHBORS.
HOW DO YOUSEPARATE THAT?
HOW DO YOU DIVIDE A CITY
WITHOUT, GOD FORBID,
DESTROYING IT?
I DON'T SEE HOW JERUSALEM
CAN BE SHARED BETWEEN TWO
POLITICAL ENTITIES THAT ARE
EMERGING OUT OF A 100-YEAR
WAR.
Reporter: AND FOR
PEOPLE FROM MY WORLD VIEW
AND MY CHRISTIAN VIEW, WE
TAKE VERYSERIOUSLY THE
PSALMIST WHEN HE SAYS: PRAY
FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM.
MAY THEY PROSPER, WHO LOVE
YOU.
YES.
Reporter: AS WE SIT
HERE AND WE LOOK AT THIS,
HOW DO YOU PRAY FOR THIS
CITY?
I PRAY THAT I PERSONALLY
SHOULD BE WORTHY OF LIVING
HERE.
I PRAY THAT THE PEOPLE OF
ISRAEL WILL BE WORTHY OF
THIS STORY.
I PRAY FOR OUR STRENGTH AND
I PRAY FOR OUR GENEROSITY OF
SPIRIT.
I PRAY THAT WE BE PROTECTED
FROM HATRED, THAT OUR HEARTS
BE OPEN TO LOVE ALLOF THE
PEOPLE OF THIS LAND, AND ALL
THOSE WHO TURN TOWARDS THE
CITY WITH HOPE.úx
I PRAY FOR ALL OF US.
THAT'S MY PRAYER.
Chris: COMING UP, SCOTT
AND HIS WIFE, NEDRA, TAKE A
WALK THROUGH ONE OF
JERUSALEM'S MOST COLORFUL
MARKETS.
Chris: WELL, SCOTT,
WE'VE ATTORNEY DONE A
STORY ON DIVIDING JERUSALEM,
AND WE SPOKE ABOUT THE 1967
WAR.
AND THEN THERE WAS A STORY
WHAT YOU AND NEDRA DID.
YOU TOURED MAHANE YEHUDA,
THE OPEN MARKET, AND WHAT
WAS THAT LIKE?
AND TASTE-TESTING ALL OF
THAT FOOD.
IT WAS AN OVERWHELMING
EXPERIENCE, TASTING THE FOOD
THAT IS MADE THERE -- GROWN
THROUGHOUT ISRAEL AND
BROUGHT TO THIS MARKETPLACE,
WITH JEWS AND ARABS SIDE BY
SIDE, SHOPPING AND TALKING
TO ONE ANOTHER AND
CONDUCTING COMMERCE AND NO
ISSUES.
IN THE MARKETPLACE KNOWN AS
THE "SHOOK."
I CAN SAY IT THAT WAY AS A
SCOTSMAN, BUT AMERICANS SAY
IT IS NOT "SHOOK" IT IS
"SHOOK."
Chris: AND HERE IS THE
STORY AS SCOTT AND NEDRA GO
TO THE SHOOK.
Reporter: IT IS
JERUSALEM'S MOST FAMOUS
MARKET AND THERE IS NOTHING
ORDINARY ABOUT IT.
HERE WE ARE IN THE CITY OF
JERUSALEM.
ABSOLUTELY.
Reporter: AND WE'RE
ABOUT TO CROSS A VERY
WELL-KNOWN,HISTORICALLY
KNOWN,JAFFA ROAD.
ABOUT A MILE AND A HALF DOWN
THE ROAD IS THE OLD CITY'S
JAFFA GATE.
IN THE LATE 1800s, A FEW
BRAVE JEWS ESTABLISHED HOMES
HERE, A LONG WAY FROM THE
PROTECTION OF THE CITY
WALLS.
TODAY YOU WOULD NEVER
EVEN IMAGINE SUCH A THING.
BUT WHEN THEY MOVED OUT OF
THE OLD CITY, THEY WERE
MOVINGTO THESE SECURE KIND
OF NEIGHBORHOODS.
THAT'S WHY THE NAME OF THE
MARKET IS CALLED M MAHANE
YEHUDA.
IT IS NAMED AFTER THAT
NEIGHBORHOOD THAT WAS BUILT
IN 1887.
Reporter: JAFFA ROAD
CONNECTS JERUSALEM TO THE
MEDITERRANEAN SEAPORT AT
JAFFA, CONSIDERED BY SOME
THE OLDEST HARBOR IN THE
WORLD.
THE THEATERS FOR LEBANON
THAT WERE IMPORTED BY DAVID
AND SOLOMON, THEY HAD TO
COME FROM JAFFA INTO
JERUSALEM.
NOW IT IS A PEDESTRIAN MALL
WITH A EUROPEAN LIGHT RAIL
GOING THROUGH IT.
Reporter: MY WIFE,
NEDRA, AND I JOIN THE WALK
THROUGH THE MAHANE YEHUDA AS
SHOPPERS PREPARE FOR THE
SABBATH.
WE HAVE TO BY SAHBA, AND
TRADITIONALLY YOU BY TWO OF
THEM BECAUSE TRADITIONALLY
THE CHILDREN ALWAYS HAD A
DOUBLE PORTION.
Reporter: ONE SPICY
OLIVE.
THAT'S GOOD AND SPICY.
Reporter: DOZENS OF
COUNTRIES AND CULTURES ARE
REPRESENTED IN THE SHOOK,
BROUGHT HERE BY JEWS
RETURNING TO THE LAND FROM
MORE THAN 100 COUNTRIES.
AN IRANIAN JEW STARTED A
SPICE SHOP IN JERUSALEM IN
1953.
TODAY HIS GRANDSONS STILL
RUN THE SHOP.
THREE GENERATIONS MIXING
SPICES AND SELLING SPICES
HERE IN JERUSALEM FROM
IRAN.
Reporter: AN ESTIMATED
200,000 PEOPLE VISIT THE
SHOOK EACH WEEK, RICH AND
POOR, AS WELL AS USE AND
ARABS, SHOP IN THE MARKET.
BUT IT HAS HAD ITS SHARE OF
TRAGEDY.
THAT SAYS TO REMEMBER.
Reporter: JULY 30,
1997, SUICIDE BOMBERS KILLED
16 PEOPLE HERE AND WOUNDED
ALMOST 200.
TERROR ATTACKS IN THE MARKET
VIRTUALLY DESTROYED
BUSINESS, SO THE
MUNICIPALITY REINVENTED THE
SHOOK TO MAKE IT ONE OF THE
TRENDIEST PLACES IN THE
CITY.
RESTAURANTS, BISTROS, AND
EVEN NIGHT LIFE IS HERE.
SO YOUSEE ALL THINGS WORK
TOGETHER FOR GOOD.
Reporter: ONE RELIGIOUS
JEW SUMMED UP THE SHOOK FOR
US.
HE SAID, IF YOU WANT TO TALK
TO GOD, GO TO THE WESTERN
WALL.
BUT IF YOU WANT TO SEE GOD
AT WORK, GO TO THE SHOOK.
AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE
SAW.
> UP NEXT, ONE OF
JERUSALEM'S PATRIARCH DIES.
A LOOK BACK AT THE LIFE OF
LANCE LAMBERT, A MAN WHO
LOVED ISRAEL, THE GOD OF THE
Chris: WELL, SCOTT, A
FORTUNATE THING HAPPENED A
FEW DAYS AGO -- AN
UNFORTUNATE THING HAPPENED,
LANCE LAMBERT, WHO IS A
PATRIARCH FOR THE CITY OF
JERUSALEM, AND HE TEAMED UP
WITH YOUR GOOD FRIEND,
DERRICK PRINCE, AND IT IS
SAD TO SEE ANOTHER
GENERATION GO.
WHAT IS THE VALUE OF MEN
LIKE DERRICK AND LANCE, THE
PATRIARCHS OF THE FAITH?
THEY WERE MEN WHO HAD
PROPHETIC INSIGHT OF WHAT
GOD WANTED TO DO HERE.
YOU GO BACK AND LISTEN TO
THEIR TEACHINGS FROM YEARS
AGO AND IT HAS COME TO
PASS.
GOD HAS PROPHETS AND THEY'RE
STILL ALIVE TODAY.
Chris: SPEAKING ABOUT
JERUSALEM AND BEING
PROPHETIC, WE SPOKE TO LANCE
LAMBERT SEVERAL YEARS AGO,
AND HE TALKED ABOUT THE
IMPORTANCE OF THE CITY OF
JERUSALEM.
JUST A FEW MILES FROM
HERE, JESUS WAS BORN, THE
MESSIAH.
A FEW MILES IN THE OPPOSITE
DIRECTION, HE WAS
CRUCIFIED.
HE WAS BURIED AND HE ROSE
AGAIN ON THE THIRD DAY.
AND A FEW MILES FROM HERE HE
ROSE FROM THE MOUNT --
ASCENDING FROM THE MOUNT OF
OLIVES TO THE RIGHT HAND OF
THE MAGESTY ON HIGH.
THAT, I THINK, MAKES
JERUSALEM AN INCREDIBLY
IMPORTANT CITY.
Chris: WE'VE DONE THIS
SHOW, TALKING ABOUT LANCE
LAMBERT, DERRICK PRINCE, AND
WE TALKED ABOUT THE '67 WAR
AND DIVIDING JERUSALEM.
ANY FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT THE
CITY AND HOW IT --
YEAH.
I THINK A COUPLE OF THINGS.
THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS NOT OF
THIS EARTH.
AND THE GOVERNMENT WILL BE
UPON HIS SHOULDERS.
SO I PUT MY ENTIRE FUTURE ON
WHAT THE LORD IS GOING TO DO
HERE.
HE IS GOING TO REBUILD
JERUSALEM COMPLETELY, AS IT
WAS IN THE DAYS OF
NEHEMIAH.
AND HE IS GOING TO REBUILD
THE WALLS.
AND WE WILL COME TOGETHER ON
THE WALL AS ONE PEOPLE.
AND ACCEPT THAT GOD IS GOING
TO DO SOMETHING POWERFUL AND
MIGHTY HERE, CULMINATING IN
JESUS COMING BACK AND
SETTING UP SHOP.
Chris: NOT TOO FAR FROM
HERE, AT THE MOUNT OF OL
LIVES.
THAT'S RIGHT.
Chris: WE HAVE A LOT TO
LOOK FORWARD TO AND A LOT TO
DO PREPARING FOR THOSE
DAYS.
SCOTT, WE HOPE TO SEE YOU
BACK HERE IN JERUSALEM.
YOU WILL SEE ME IN
JERUSALEM.
I DON'T WANT YOUR JOB.
Chris: OKAY.
THAT'S IT FOR THIS EDITION.
I'M CHRIS MITCHELL, ALONG
WITH SCOTT ROSS, AND WE'LL
SEE YOU NEXT TIME ON
"JERUSALEM DATELINE."
