When Stephen and Ana Lauing married, their vows “for richer or poorer” were put to the test right away.
“When we first got married it was really tight. I was doing what I could: bottles, cans, cleaning houses — everything,” says Stephen.
Stephen’s hay harvesting company collapsed when his business partner walked out. So Stephen and his new wife were left with $100,000 of debt.
“There were times when I really felt stretched,” admits Ana.
Ana was working full-time as a receptionist, but even on a tight budget they had a hard time meeting basic living expenses, let alone paying off their debt.
Yet Stephen believed strongly in tithing. Ana wasn’t so sure. Stephen illustrated their discussions about tithing.
I asked her, “Are the bills paid?”
She said, “Yeah, the bills are paid, except…”
I said, “Did you tithe?”
She said, “No.”
I said, “What do you mean, you didn’t tithe?”
So even on their meager income they gave. And God blessed Stephen with a good job and favor with their creditors. In just two years the Lauings were debt-free!
Stephen’s new job allowed them to increase their giving, and they became CBN Partners.
“As the years have gone by, we’ve had consistent growth, and we’d give. We gave more, and it increased every year,” says Stephen.
“It’s hard for me to believe. I see the numbers, and they work out. We’re able to pay; we’re able to save; we’re able to give over what I’m able to imagine,” Ana agrees.
Eventually Stephen started his own business. The Lauings bought a new home and paid it off within three years! For them gaining means giving, and so in 1998 the Lauings became Chairman Circle members.
“I get so much joy out of knowing that I can give more,” says Stephen. “The Lord told me that this was my ministry. If I’m able to make good money, then I’d be able to bless even more. And that’s the desire of my heart.”
“What it really gets down to is: Are you going to take the step of faith to see what He’s going to do? Because He will,” says Ana.
Stephen and Ana have seen God do a miracle in their lives. They took a step of faith and gave to God’s work. God rewarded their faith and obedience and poured enormous blessings into their lives. This is God’s economy. What’s He’s done for others, He can do for you.
