A Familiar Family for Gong

CBN.com — The first thing you notice about 5-year-old Gong is that he always seems to be smiling, especially when he is with his Auntie Sumrieng.  She is the only mother that Gong has ever known.   His own mother abandoned him at birth.     

But like many in this community in Southern Thailand, everyone works to bring in a little income for the family.        

“Sometimes, our people ask my mom to make cooking oil,” Sumrieng told us. “My father collects used bottles to sell when he feels strong enough.  I work as a teacher’s assistant.”   

At one point the family talked about taking the boy to live at an orphanage because they could not afford to keep him any longer.   They argued that there, at least he would get enough to eat. 

So CBN's Orphan’s Promise decided to help.  First, we built a fish farm for   Gong’s grandparents to manage.   And, since Sumrieng already had been trained to cut hair, we set up a small salon for her right in her home.  Within a short time, the family’s income had risen 800 percent!   And that meant  that Gong would not have to go to live at an orphanage, and will always have a place to call home.  

“From the bottom of my heart, I want to say thank you, Orphan’s Promise,” Sumrieng said.  “You gave us a better life!”
 
Gong added this “Thank you” too, with a little bow.
