Venkata was just 10 years old when she came home from school and found out her mother had died. In southern India, local custom said she had to take on the household responsibilities for herself and her father. Then two years later, Venkata began to lose sight in her left eye because of a cataract.
“When I cut vegetables, the knife seemed too close. But when I go out, things seemed too far and blurry,” says Venkata.
Venkata’s eyesight became so bad that she eventually dropped out of school. Her father, Laxmaiah, wanted to get her the operation she needed to remove the cataract, but working as a day laborer, he couldn’t afford it.
“I wanted to send her back to school. When I asked her to go, she cried and told me that she could not see,” says Laxmaiah.
Venkata and her father are Christians. They prayed that Venkata’s sight would be restored. Then, Operation Blessing came to their village with good news! Venkata would get a free cataract operation.
“By God’s grace, if she gets her eyesight back, she can go to school and learn to read. She’ll be able to read the Bible to me,” says Laxmaiah.
“I pray that God will give me back my eyesight,” says Venkata.
The operation went smoothly and the next day the bandages were removed.
“Now my daughter can see clearly,” says her happy father. “She can go to school, learn how to read, and have a brighter future. Thank you Operation Blessing.”
