CBN.com — Leom made a promise to his son many years ago, a promise he hasn’t been able to keep. His son Lay, now nine years old, was born with a cleft palate.
“I promised him we would get him surgery someday,” said Leom. “My wife and I work hard from early morning till evening clearing the jungle for farming. But we earn just enough for one daily meal for the family.”
“I think I look like a monkey,” said Lay. “My face is ugly. When I was six, I asked my mom why I looked like this. She didn’t know what to say.”
Ever since Lay was born, his mother has watched helplessly as her son struggled to eat, talk, and even breathe.
When I looked at him, I felt I must have done something bad in the past and this was my punishment. I worried that one day Lay would take his own life.”
“When kids call me ‘cleft lip monster,’ I felt so hurt,” said Lay. “Sometimes, I got angry. Inside, I’m just a normal boy! I wish I had good lips like everyone else.”
Then one day, Lay’s mother met someone who told her about CBN.
First we arranged transportation for the seven hour journey to the nearest city hospital. Then a surgeon performed the operation that would change Lay’s future.
A week later, Lay was back home enjoying meal with his family. Now he doesn’t choke on his food or drinks anymore. He’s healthy and strong and always talking and smiling.
“Lay has a great smile now! He is not ashamed to be seen by the neighbors anymore. I am so thankful that our promise has finally been fulfilled thanks to CBN,” said Leom.
“The other kids say my new lip looks good!” said Lay with a big smile! “When I see myself in the mirror, I am free from shame. Thank you for giving me a new lip and lots of friends!”
