Reporter: TOP SHOT IS A
HISTORY CHANNEL ANSWER TO
THE REALITY SHOW.
IN THIS WEAPONS COMPETITION,
16 SHARP-SHOOTERS MUST
MASTER THE MOST PRIMITIVE OF
WEAPONS, TO THE MOST SPIS
SOPHISTICATED.
AT THE SAME TIME, OVERCOMING̼?
GRUELING OBSTACLES.
DUSTIN ELLERMAN WENT ON TO
WIN THE TOP SPOT ON THE
SHOW.
UNLIKE
THE OTHER
CONTESTANTS, HE
IS
SELF-TAUGHT.
SO TODAY HE IS
GOING TO
SHOW
ME
A THING OR TWO.
ALL RIGHT, BUDDY, SHOW ME
WHAT YOU'VE GOT.
WHAT
ARE WE SHOOTING AT?
PENNIES AT 50 SHOT.
CHEAPER THAN DIMES.
Reporter: THERE WE GO.
ALL OF THEM DONE.
I THINK WE'RE BREAKING SOME
SORT OF FEDERAL LAW.
I THINK SO.
Reporter: MANY VIEWERS
CONSIDERED DUSTIN THE LEAST
LIKELY TO WIN.
AT ONLY 28 YEARS OLD, HE AND
HIS WIFE BRITTANY WON A
CHRISTIAN SUMMER CAMP IN
LAVALLEA, TEXAS.
THE CAMP WAS FOUNDED BY
MY PARENTS.
IT IS A SUMMER CHRISTIAN
KIDS' CAMP.
WE HAVE A TON OF FUN
ACTIVITIES AND WE TEACH THEM
ABOUT JESUS.
Reporter: THE IDEA OF
COMPETING ON "TOP SHOT"
STARTED LIKE A FUN
ADVENTURE.
ONCE I STARTED GETTING
INTO THE CASTING PROCESS AND
THINGS STARTED GETTING MORE
SERIOUS, I WAS LIKE, WOW,
THREE MILLION VIEWERS.
I COULD USE THIS AS A
PLATFORM.
I STARTED SEEING MAYBE HE
WANTED ME IN THAT.
AND IT IS REALITY TV, AND
THEY JUST WANT YOU TO BE
YOURSELF.
Reporter: DUSTIN SPENT
A LOT OF TIME WITH THE 13
OTHER MALE CONTESTANTS ON
THE SHOW.
MOST OF THE GUYS IN THE
HOUSE ARE GREAT AND
HONORABLE SPORTSMEN AND GUN
GUYS.
I KIND OF WENT IN THINKING I
MIGHT BE INSULTED,
PERSECUTED, BUT, REALLY, I
HAD A LOT OF RESPECT FROM
THE GUYS.
IT WAS NEAT JUST ASKING ME
ABOUT MY FAITH AND LETTING
ME SHARE IN LITTLE WAYS.
Reporter: HOW DID YOU
BECOME THIS TOP SHOT.
IT IS SOMETHING THAT HAS
BEEN IN ME SINCE I WAS A
LITTLE GUY.
MY SUMMERS WERE SPENT AT MY
GRANDPARENTS' FARM, SHOOTING
THE TREES WITH BEE BEE.
B.B.s.
Reporter: DUSTIN TAUGHT
HIMSELF PRACTICALLY
EVERYTHING HE KNOWS ABOUT
WEAPONS.
ISN'T THAT COOL?
Reporter: MOST OF THE
"TOP SHOT" CONTESTANTS HAD
EXTENSIVE TRAINING WITH THE
MILITARY OR POLICE FORCE.
Reporter: HOW DID YOU
MEET THESE GUYS?
IT IS GOD'S FAVOR.
EVEN IF GOD DIDN'T SUPER
NATURALLY HELP ME CURVE THE
BULLET INTO THE TARGET, HE
GAVE ME THE ABILITY.
YOU DONE SEE THE CAMERA
CREWS AND THE 200 PEOPLE
THAT MAKE "TOP SHOT" HAPPEN
BEHIND THE SCENE.
AND KNOWING THAT THREE
MILLION PEOPLE ARE GOING TO
LAUGH IF YOU CAN'T MAKE THE
SHOT.
AND A LOT OF GUYS CRUMBLE
UNDER THAT PRESSURE.
BUT I WAS THERE TRUSTING GOD
TO HELP ME DO GOOD.
OR IF HE IS DONE WITH ME,
I'M CONTENT.
Reporter: HITTING THE
TARGET WASN'T THE TOUGHEST
PART FOR DUSTIN.
THE HARDEST PART WAS
SPENDING ALL OF THAT TIME
AWAY FROM MY FAMILY WITHOUT
ANY CONTACT.
IT WAS A TOUGH SIX WEEKS,
HAVING TO ANSWER QUESTIONS
WHERE DADDY IS.
AND NOT ABLE TO TALK ABOUT
IT.
DADDY IS OUT OF TOWN.
HE'S WORKING.
Reporter: WHAT WAS YOUR
CHALLENGE?
FULL-COURT 10 22s.
I WAS SUPPOSED TO CUT Q-TIPS
IN HALF, AND I DID.
I GOT MY TICKET INTO THE
FINALE BY HITTING A GOLF
BALL AT 100 YARDS.
AND NOBODY ELSE COULD COME
CLOSE.
Reporter: HE TOOK THE
"TOP SHOT" CROWD.
WERE YOU SURPRISED?
I
WAS VERY SURPRISED HOW
I PERFORMED AND MEASURED UP
TO ALL OF THE PROFESSIONAL
SHOOTERS.
Reporter: I COULDN'T
HELP BUT ASK DUSTIN TO GIVE
ME A FEW POINTERS.
THERE YOU GOT IT.
THAT'S A SMALL TARGET, TOO.
Reporter: DUSTIN TOOK
HOME THE $100,000 GRAND
PRIZE FROM "TOP SHOT."
AND SOME OF THAT IS COMING
BACK TO HIS CAMP, TO TEACH
KIDS ABOUT GOD'S LOVE.
DUSTIN IS GETTING LOTS OF
INVITATIONS TO SHARE HIS
STORY AND HIS SKILLS.
Reporter: HAVE THE NAVY
SKILLS COME CALLING YET?
I WENT AND SHOT WITH THE
F.B.I. AND SO THAT WAS WON.
I GOT PERFECT SCORES ON
THEIR TESTS.
GOD GIVES US GIFTS AND
TALENTS FOR A REASON.
IT IS AMAZING THAT GOD CAN
USE SOMETHING AS SILLY AS
SHOOTING TO BRING GLORY TO
HIS NAME.
IT IS PRETTY NEAT.
