CBNNews.com – When the terror plot was foiled, a nightmare was averted. But a far larger nightmare remains: the fear that Britain has become a major recruiting ground for terrorists.
The newspaper The Independent quotes security sources as saying that close to 12 hundred persons in Britain are actively involved in terrorism.
A poll last year for The London Times found that 7 percent of Britain’s one and half million Muslims support suicide attacks under certain conditions. That’s about 100-thousand people. At a protest over the Mohammed cartoons at the Danish embassy in London this spring, some British Muslims called for nuking the U.S.
Meanwhile, for peaceful British Muslims, the expected backlash from another homegrown terror incident is like a bad dream.
“We don’t really know what is happening ourselves. They are making us all to be terrorists, but we are not terrorists. We live our lives, in our culture and religion, we are not supposed to bomb people or kill people,” said Imran Khan, an Alum Rock resident.
“I’m a Muslim and my religion does not teach me to go and do something stupid. It teaches us to live in harmony, to love your neighbor. It doesn’t teach us to go out there and blow people up,” said Ayub Hassain, another Alum Rock resident.
In an open letter in British newspapers Saturday, Britain’s Muslim leaders blamed the war on terror and Israel for radicalizing British Muslims. But British Home Secretary John Reid says al-Qaeda began plotting against the U.K. more than a year before 911.
Moderate British Muslim leader Harris Rafiq told CBN News radical Muslim leaders in Britain are now lying to the government and the media about their intentions, under the Muslim doctrine of Takiyya, which some believe allows Muslims to lie to infidels.
“One of my biggest concerns is when middle England wakes up and decides enough is enough. We don’t like Muslims. We don’t like Islam and we don’t want that anymore in our country,” said Rafiq.
But far from that, political correctness is still the rule here. The British media has been reluctant to even identify the terrorist suspects in custody as Muslims, for fear of being seen as insensitive.
As one writer put it, Britain is in denial because the truth is so terrible. And the truth, he writes, is that there is a fifth column inside Britain that is trying to destroy it.
