(CBN News) - Some 20,000 people who support the biblical view
of marriage turned out for a rally in Seattle over the weekend.
Hundreds of gay-rights advocates also showed up to protest the event.
Focus on the Family's founder, Dr. James Dobson, told the crowd that if gay
marriage becomes legal, Christians will have lost the culture war.
Dobson said, We are now contemplating throwing it on the ash heap of history
and we must not let that happen."
Susan Wilson, a traditional marriage advocate said, "I think there's
been an erosion of values that seems to be happening as far as we as a family
stand for, so it's a great place for my daughter and myself to take a stand
and say this is what we believe."
The rally was called "Mayday for Marriage," and was held at Seattle's
Safeco Field, Saturday. Churches from around Washington state organized the
event, that included music and various speakers.
It also attracted protestors. Gay protestors chant "Marriage equality
- now!"
Hundreds of gay-rights protesters waved signs and tried to shout down the
worship service and rally. Arrivals had to walk between the counter-protesters
to enter the stadium.
A gay marriage supporter said, "I would never go to a convention to
infringe on our rights."
Although there were some angry conversations between gay-rights activists
and those in support of traditional marriage, the confrontations were mostly
peaceful.
Aaron Haskins, associate pastor of City Church, said, "Our sole purpose
is to let people know that there are God-fearing people who support the tradition
institution of marriage, as defined between one man and one woman."
