Iran Chooses Mughniyeh's Successor

CBNNews.com - BEIRUT, Lebanon - Iran's appointment of a successor to Hezbollah deputy commander Imad Mughniyeh, assassinated by a car bomb in Damascus eight months ago, leaves little doubt as to Iran's role in the Lebanese-based terror group.
A report in Italy's Corriere della Sera daily names Muhammad Riza Zahdi, also known as Hassan Mahdawi, as Mughniyeh's successor.
The article states that Zhadi will oversee weapons smuggling to Hezbollah from Syria, construction of its military positions in southern Lebanon, and a restructuring of the terror group's hierarchy.
Since the Second Lebanon War in the summer of 2006, Iran has increased its involvement in Hezbollah's infrastructure.
"There is a real Iranian command now over Hezbollah," a senior Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officer said.
"This doesn't mean that [the group's spiritual leader Sheikh Hassan] Nasrallah is a puppet, but it does mean that whenever he pops his head out of his bunker, he sees an Iranian official standing over him," he said.
While Iran has armed, trained and funded Hezbollah, the Islamic Republic now wants to be able to order an attack from Lebanon should Israel or the U.S. make good on threats to strike its nuclear facilities.
