WASHINGTON - A Roman Catholic cardinal has told worshipers, including five of the nine Supreme Court justices, that the law is a guide to an orderly society.
Cardinal John Patrick Foley spoke in Washington Sunday at the church's annual Red Mass, which is held on the day before the Supreme Court begins its term.
Foley said the religious and legal professions "both see law as a means in which people can be educated to perceive what is good and to strive for it."
Four of the five Roman Catholics on the high court -- Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy and Clarence Thomas -- attended the Mass. They were joined by Justice Stephen Breyer, who's Jewish. The fifth Catholic, Justice Samuel Alito, did not attend.
