Interfaith Coalition to Fight Ban on Religious Defamation

WASHINGTON - A coalition of Christians, Jews and Muslims has formed to fight efforts to ban "defamation of religion" under international law.

Kevin Hasson, president of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, says more than 50 Islamic nations plan to bring an anti-defamation resolution before the U.N. General Assembly before the end of this year. He says it really is an effort to ban what Muslims view as blasphemy.

Hasson says a ban on religious defamation could be interpreted broadly to bar evangelists from saying that non-Christian religions are invalid or untrue.

The Becket Fund is joined by the American Jewish Congress, the International Quranic Center, Freedom House and other groups in working to block its consideration and passage by the U.N.
