Oregon Governor Says Salem Church is Still His Parish

PORTLAND, Ore. - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski says he still considers Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Salem to be his church even though he has not attended since 2006.

Archbishop John Vlazny has criticized Kulongoski for planning to host an abortion-rights fundraiser this evening, two days before the church holds its annual Respect Life Mass.

The archbishop said in a statement, "For a Catholic governor to host an event of this sort seems a deliberate dissent from the teachings of the church." Vlazny also has said that Catholic officeholders who disagree with church teachings should refrain from receiving Communion.

The governor's spokeswoman says Kulongoski attends Catholic churches around the state as he travels.
